I would like to do BLW and H is mostly on board but a little skeptical/worried about choking. We'll be doing mashed stuff for now, banana, avocado, sweet potato, etc. Our pediatrician told us to skip rice cereal - she said it was unnecessary, especially with concerns about arsenic content.

@icedtea J wasn't impressed with the banana either the first time we tried a couple of weeks ago. He was also not ready to swallow. He was all over it when we tried again last night. But steak fries! 😂

Our pediatrician suggested we skip cereals, and the practice we go to held a workshop with a nutritionist that was really helpful. She suggested starting with veggies, meat, and egg yolks, so we've done that. But I stuck to store-bought purees for most of the veggies just for convenience - I can barely feed myself and DH most days. DD was not super into almost any of the food we offered, so I wasn't really pushing it - maybe every other day after work I'd offer some. But then we got to fruits, and either those got her excited about solids or she hit a new developmental stage or something. Currently we're doing small amounts of purees twice a day just to get her introduced to individual foods, then in November my plan is to introduce chunky solids and letting her feed herself.
DD was 6 months when we started, but 7 months when she actually began liking solids.

I started with sweet potatoes and it was a great choice. Mine still love them, although we moved onto more finger foods now. I did purees, but started to incorporate more finger foods as soon as they were able to pick things up. Things like soft bananas, avocado, blue berries and puffs/cheerios are good choices.
I made a few homemade purees, mainly sweet potatoes, zucchini and peas. I thought store bought veggie purees were kind of gross. I never made any fruit purees though because applesauce is sooooooo easy to pour from the jar. ha!

We've started with purees and things are going great. I'm really not into BLW at all.
I started with root vegtable purees and now we are on to more combos.
DS' favorite combos are Apple/pear/ spinach , Apple/avocado/spinach and squash/sweet potatoe/chicken, scrambled egg/avocado -i just mush these two together a bit.
I make my own and find it easy to do one day at week. I like that I can mix the combos that he likes and I can add the spices and herbs that I want him to get used to like garlic powder and dried herbs. I also adjust how chunky I want it based on how ds is doing. He is really good with chewing small chunks now so I keep some texture to the purees.
I'm going to add some rice to my next stew puree and then quinoa to see how he does with those.
I'm am terrified to try peanut butter and the allergies I have but I really need to do it soon.

mikaela20, oh that's interesting about herbs and spices. Good luck with trying peanut butter. Does your LO have any added risks that make you nervous?

No real reason but I'm very allergic to peas and they are in the peanut family so of course in my mind I'm thinking he will be allergic to peanuts. His doctor didn't agree with my theory lol

We did BLW for DS1 and I am a big fan. There's a great youtube video that shows the difference between choking and gagging. I highly recommend it if you are concerned about choking and it's stopping you from doing BLW. We started with purees at 6 months and then started BLW around 7-8 months. It was just the easiest option for us and DS1 was very interested in food. DS1 was refusing the bottle by 11 months and we got the OK to switch to regular food at his 1 year appt.

We plan to do BLW at 6 months. Pedi gave the ok to start purees at her 4 month appt yesterday but is fine with us waiting and doing BLW.

We are doing BLW and started this week now that he's 6 months and siting unassisted for well over a minute. Do your research if you're going to do BLW and I highly recommend joining the Baby Led Weaning for Beginners and Beyond group on Facebook as a resource if you're interested. It is so nice not to have to feed a baby while we're eating dinner and just let him feed himself. Also nice not to have to buy any food specifically for the baby, he can have part of our meal or else we always have apples, bananas, bread for toast, eggs, etc. on hand if we were in a bind.

I forgot to mention cereal. I get an organic oats and chia cereal which doesn't have rice. I find it helps to give it to him before his morning nap. He loves it and it helps keep him full for the nap. He usually naps for 1.5-2 hours.

I have to figure out protein sources for solids, since we're vegetarian. Isn't quinoa a protein? It's pricey, but there's infant quinoa cereal out there now

Pedi is against rice cereal, but that's what DS2 gets in his bottles. The pedi wanted us to do oatmeal in the bottles (reflux), but DS2 won't take that or bottles with barley or multigrain in them. He tolerates quinoa on occasion but won't take a bottle with it
All that to say, cereals to begin with cereals. DS1 didn't have cereal until 6m when he started solids at 4m

I’m ready to get Ollie started on solids. He will be 4 months in a few weeks so I think we might start with purees.

@icedtea don’t worry too much about nutrition the first year. Foods before one are just for fun. Breastmilk and formula is still where they are getting most of their nutrition from.

We started with rice cereal and have moved onto purées. I do make my own (for now) just because it's cheaper. So far he's had apple, pear, banana, sweet potato, and carrot. I'll do 3-4 days of each just to keep an eye open if there's a reaction but so far so good.

So far mashed up banana is a huge hit. How much is a reasonable amount for him to eat? I want to make sure he doesn't reduce his breastmilk intake but my supply is also on the low side. Is there too much solids at this age?

Is there too much solids at this age? As long as breast milk is his main source of nutrition and you're not cutting sessions in place of food then you're good. DS2 eats about 1/4 of a banana right now.

When can I expect stinky solid food poop? We've only done small amounts of solids sporadically so far and no poop change yet for which I'm grateful.

@icedtea, I saw someplace briefly (and got distracted and haven't looked further into it) that recommended giving babies tofu, which would address your protein and iron concerns.

We're going to do BLW, and our pedi said there was really no reason to get special baby food...just give him little bits of our food. I think I'm going to start with avocado and then maybe sweet potatoes (especially with Thanksgiving coming up). I was SUCH a picky eater as a kid, so I want to introduce DS to as many flavors as possible before he's a picky toddler. He might still end up being picky, but at least I'll know I tried. My DSD is also super picky about eating vegetables (almost 11 years old 🙄), so I want to introduce as many of those as possible early on. I'd rather be able to just cook healthy food rather than trying to "hide" vegetables in other things.

Scrambled egg is also gross. I'm gonna chalk it up to him being cranky and teething. Avocado and sweet potato are up next.

I’m concerned that once V realizes food is something she can have that she will lose her shit if she isn’t given food when others are eating. My main concern is at daycare. They aren’t familiar with BLW so we are starting at home until we feel more confident in V’s abilities but she goes to an in home daycare so she will see older kids eating and I’m just afraid she will lose her shit if they don’t let her have any.

teachermomtobe, I hadn't really thought of that. We hadn't planned on J starting solids at daycare until later as well... Hm. As of now, J has decided he just doesn't like food anymore. On the other hand, we give him a sip of water here and there for fun and he is obsessed.
