F loves solids! So far we have sweet potatoes and oatmeal. We're going to do bananas this weekend. I want to do avocados soon, but I couldn't find good ones at the store. Any other early favorites? We're doing homemade purees. Plums/prunes, peaches, blueberries

We're going to try avocado this weekend. I'm so excited. I also want DS to try sweet potatoes soon so that we can bring some with us at Thanksgiving so that he can sit at the table and participate.

J hates everything. At least I don’t think he likes purees. I’m gonna try giving him pieces he could hold instead and see if he likes that any better. Our mealtime attempts are mostly him just playing with the spoon.

We're doing homemade purees. Apple, pear, sweet potato, peas, peaches (which might be hard to find a nice peach this time of year). I've done carrots too but I have a hard time getting them smooth enough with just the Magic Bullet. Use some of the water when you steam the fruit/veggie to blend it because some of the nutrients get pulled into the water. Or at least that's what my Grandma always says, so idk if that's real lol.

After many attempts he did eat some applesauce today. Well most of it ends up on his hands and face but I think he ate a little bit.

How was everyone's Thanksgiving? What did the babies eat? After a couple weeks of going on solid food strike, J is back to loving most foods. He had squash and turkey at Thanksgiving and loved both. Now that he is 6 months I want to get more into non-pureed/mashed foods. mikaela20, did you try peanut butter with your LO yet? How did it go? I totally forgot to try it with J until now... do I just give him a bit of peanut butter straight up or what?

At first I put a tiny amount in his oat cereal. And then didn't notice anything and kept adding more and more. Now he gets a teaspoon every morning with his cereal. He is better with chewing now so sometimes give him some of my peanut butter toast. I just lightly toast the bread so it's still fairly soft for him.

mikaela20, peanut butter in the cereal is a great idea! I'll try that tonight.

DS2 had his first taste of meats and mashed potatoes at Thanskgiving. He seemed to enjoy it! I probably should start moving into some stuff that's not puréed to give him something to practice gumming/chewing on.

Any working moms doing BLW? I'm struggling to find time to keep introducing more solids during the week because our time is so limited in the evening. I tend to just work on it on the weekends, but I need to get better about it.
So far, DS has tried avocado, butternut squash, banana, sweet potatoes, and beets. He seemed to really like the sweet potatoes. I'm so afraid to try broccoli because I don't want him to get painful gas 😖

thankfulsnail, I checked out the FB group and my word they are serious about their rules! gimmesugar I haven't tried broccoli either because of gas. And you're brave to have tried beets - all I can see is everything dyed beet red! We are doing BLW light (don't tell the FB group) and it is hard on work days. I get home, nurse while H gets dinner ready, eat/feed, clean up/bath, nurse again, then it's time for bed. It feels like a race. What do you all do for solids at daycare? I haven't started him at daycare yet but they keep asking...

They are, but believe it or not, they’re not the strictest I’ve seen! I think the safe sleep group is much more militant. I had daycare start giving Theo breakfast at 7 months. They mostly give him dry cereal kind Cheerios or rice Chex. I’ll have them add lunch at 8 months. This is the first BLW baby they’ve had so I wanted to start slow.

piratecat I used one of those pacifier looking things with holes in it and put some cut up softened beets in there to keep it off of his hands. Worked pretty well! We also haven't started solids at daycare because I feel like DS needs more practice.

I imagine jarred baby food, which I don't want, so I may hold out until he can feed himself things like Cheerios or other smaller finger foods.

cmb Yeah, I think I need to do more crock pot meals or something because we're currently eating after he goes to bed at 7:30. My DSD has activities 3 nights a week right now, so doing dinner between, say, 5:30 and 6:30 is really tough.

Calling all BLW moms!
Is your daycare on board with it? We started taking some soft foods this week that we had already tried at home. The teacher is pressuring me to let him eat purees because she thinks he's hungry and can't eat enough solids. He's still figuring out his gag reflex (which I told them). She actually had the gall to insinuate that he could "get autism" because it happened to some nephew of hers or something because he didn't "eat enough." First of all, that's not how this works....that's not how any of this works. Second of all, I send extra milk since I have plenty in the freezer and pump enough and he sometimes doesn't finish it all. So, you can't convince me that he's super hungry. I explained that I cleared (a) the number of oz of milk that I'm sending and (b) the fact that there's no reason to do purees. Our pediatrician said that it's a personal choice and that there's not one way that's better than the other. So, I guess my question is two fold:
1) How did you handle BLW solids with daycare? 2) How long did it take your baby to REALLY get into eating food rather than just tasting/gnawing/playing/gagging?
Spoiler alert: I talked to the director immediately before leaving the daycare 🙄😤
ETA: DS is just over 7 months old

I told them they could give her purees on a pre-loaded spoon that she feeds herself. It was a compromise and if she can do that for yogurt and applesauce then I think she won’t be confused if she does it with purees. By 9 months they will feel more comfortable giving solid foods so for now this is how we are handling it.

teachermomtobeThanks! I think our issue will fix itself because they're moving DS up to the next class where the teachers actually encourage self-feeding. I've been sending mashed/chunky table food and try to include some larger pieces for him to (what they call) "play with." Just yesterday, I happened to see them feeding him in the high chair, and I got annoyed because the teacher was blocking his hands so that she could get the spoon in his mouth. When he uses a spoon at home, I might help guide him, but I let him put the spoon in his mouth. I'm sure that's what he was trying to do, and she wasn't letting him. Ugh. I didn't say anything, though, since it's his last week in that room anyway. Just picking my battles at this point.

We've been sending purees to daycare. They encourage self-feeding once teeth are in, but until then it's too hard for them to supervise self-feeding. Now that she has some top and bottom teeth, she can chew and has some food from the menu at daycare and some puffs and things like that.
That said, I sent purees because at 8 months she was honestly hungrier than the milk I was sending. And because I was okay with her having purees as first foods. If I wasn't, I would've figured out a way to send more milk, or to provide BLW foods at breakfast and dinner instead of lunch. If your DS isn't finishing bottles, then he's not hungry. And huge WTF to her views on autism and hunger.

I made banana pancakes this morning. He liked it a lot (but he pretty much likes everything) and I liked it a lot because it wasn’t messy. Does anyone make anything else for their kiddos?

Yeah - I think they'd have to change the ratio to facilitate it. They'll feed Cheerios or puffs to kids without teeth. But a bagel or omelet (that's the usual breakfast menu) seems like it would need closer supervision.

I made these yesterday. DS just played with them in his hands but was not interested in eating them. I like them though! Were they the 2 ingredient version (banana and egg)? That's what I did. I added some pumpkin spice too.

moutonrouge I've realized that DS really prefers eating things off of a spoon. Just this last week (his first week in the new class), he's been more interested in actually consuming food. He just turned 8 months old on 1/7. I think it helps that he sees all the other kids eating too. Right now, I'm sending kind of a mix of table food and mashed/soft food that can be on a spoon. I also put fruits in one of those pacifier-looking feeders, and he really likes that. If there's something on their menu that he might like, they give it a shot. I'll just keep offering table food periodically, but I'm really letting him take the lead. I'm quite proud of how talented he is with spoon feeding.

Also, remember that kids will vary on when things “click” for them. DS2 finally clicked on the whole feeding thing. He’ll be 9 months next week
