gingy, I am annoyed with the director for jumping to "maybe your milk isn't good enough". He could be going through a growth spurt, who knows? How has his weight gain been? Is he happy/full at home after nursing? I have supply issues and have a small kid. Sometimes he needs more milk than I can pump and gets supplemented with formula. We don't supplement at home. My pediatrician isn't concerned about his weight and has never suggested that my milk may not be nutritious enough. It sounds like what you are doing now is working just fine, breastmilk + supplementing with formula as needed. I absolutely don't see any reason why you would need to switch to formula and skip the breastmilk, unless he is not gaining weight as he should.

piratecat, yeah that upset me TBH. I was getting in my feels so I called the LC. She said it sounds like a growth spurt that has just gone longer than normal. Everything else seems to be the same. He's happy, he's sleeping the same, etc. She wants me to give it through the end of the week and see if he slows down a little with the milk. If not she has ideas to boost my supply to keep up with him. And she suggested backing off the BLW at school, because at this point the fits are just burning more calories and making him hungrier and more likely to comfort eat. So we'll just KOKO at home. He ate an entire pancake last night at dinner, so he's good with food. He's just having a moment I guess.

I don't know why anyone thinks casually throwing out a comment like that is okay. And FWIW, we didn't start him on solids at daycare for a little while after starting at home because ours was not familiar with BLW. He was 7.5 months and had gotten the hang of things much better when he started eating with the older kids at the table.

We weren't going to start this early either, but with him taking so much milk I thought solids might help. Oh well! We'll put it on pause and try again later.

gingy , 6 months is around when daycare was pushing me to send more milk as well. We weren't ready to start solids at that point, but I temporarily sent more milk. Then daycare wanted even more milk, and I just couldn't keep up. After talking to my LC and pediatrician they assured me that what I was sending should've been enough or that DD would've sent other signals (e.g., waking more at night) if it wasn't. We all kind of suspected daycare was using bottles to soothe her - so if DD was fussy, they'd decide she was hungry and not bored/teething/tired/whatever. In the end we had some ongoing tension where I was pretty firm that what I was sending was plenty every time her teacher dropped hints that DD was hungry. It was awkward and every time it made me feel sad/upset. Around 8 months we started sending purees and the same thing played out again - they pushed us to send larger containers, puffs or Cheerios, etc. The thing about purees - there's not a lot of calories in those containers. They might be the equivalent of 1-2 oz of breastmilk at most. In my case, they got daycare off my back about milk so I continued to send them and was okay with her having Cheerios for a snack. But I don't believe she was significantly less hungry with 30 calories worth of spinach and peas in her.

moutonrouge, interesting thought. They've always been good about finding ways to calm him without comfort feeding, but I wonder if there's something else going on now that's making him extra fussy and leading to more feeds. I'm going over at lunch today, so I'll chat with his teacher then. They try to do everything they can to go with what parents want, so I can't see her having a problem with adjustments. I just feel like I can't keep this poor kid full, and it's making me sad.

gingy Do they hold him while he is fed? Do his teachers control the bottle? One of the first skills daycare taught DD was holding her own bottle, and I think that contributed some to our problem. I'll admit I'm pretty passive and probably didn't take the best route working with DD's daycare. So I'm glad you're able to have a an open conversation with yours and that they are open to going with what parents want. Big hugs - it's stressful having to negotiate with other caregivers, and it is hard to feel like you're not keeping up. You're doing a wonderful job!!

gingy, I totally get it. I have a lot of feelings about my low supply and J's small size. But I am doing my best with what I've got to work with. He exclusively breastfeeds at home and doesn't seem unsatisfied after nursing sessions. I send in as much as I can pump and he gets supplemented with formula if he needs more than I can provide. As he eats more solids, I can feel the pressure lifting a bit, and I hope that you'll feel that way too. It sounds like your guy is doing great learning to eat solids at home and he'll figure it out at daycare soon too, I'm sure. You're doing great! And I think it's so cool that you get to visit and nurse him at lunch time.

moutonrouge, the teachers hold him and control his bottle. He's too distracted to keep a hold on it well enough. I think that's some of our problem with nursing too. He eats best at night when he's sleepy and in the dark room. Daytime nursing is a mess because he wants to see all the things.

I'm glad that the blanket worked and I hope he just needs a little getting used to. Did they give him a bottle before offering solids? I know that when I have forgotten to nurse before solids J was too hungry and was a frantic mess. What kinds of things does he eat at home that he enjoys? Maybe you can send in a few things that you know he likes? My kiddo can be fussy at home at the table depending on his mood and what is being offered, although it sounds like he eats much better at daycare (and is generally better behaved there because of course). I need to have a variety of things to offer him for him to get started eating and then he'll eat the rest of the stuff he had initially rejected (quite dramatically). I made sure to nurse right before we left the house, so that shouldn't have been the problem. He looooves bananas, and they have those almost every day with breakfast, which is why I thought it would be a good starting point at school. The director came in as he was getting a bottle, and his teacher explained what was going on. She said she wonders if my milk isn't fatty enough and/or doesn't have the nutrients he needs. He seems happier/fuller after a bottle of formula (they've been giving him 1-2 per day to supplement while he's eating a ton). The idea of going to all formula makes me sad, though. Maybe I'll call my LC in a bit and see what she thinks. I'm sorry. I don't have any advice but just wtfffff to the bolded. Who says that? I'm glad you were able to talk it through with your LC. Another thing too, not sure if it's already been discussed, but maybe make sure that the daycare is doing more of a paced feeding with your bottles and not just laying LO down to suck the whole thing down. There's i think some videos that are linked on the Breastfeeding page...I can see if I can find them again.

thechickencoop, they do paced feeding. His teacher has been in the infant room for 14 years now and is amazing. I think it was just the director sticking her nose in the situation. I told the teacher I want to continue with 4 bottles of milk and to add another of formula if really needed. But yesterday he had a totally normal eating day with 14 oz, so I think we're heading back to where he was before.

@icedtea have tried those protein pastas for F? We tried the black bean kind and it was gross to me but J liked it. It’s a good source of protein and has a decent amount of iron and I thought of you guys. Although he also likes plain black beans I also bought the red lentil kind but haven’t tried that yet.

Ooh I haven't tried the pastas, I'm going to get some. She doesn't like black beans, sigh. Or eggs. Or tofu. Or fish. But we're working on it! Lol There was chickpea pasta too. Oh man, those are all the good things! I can’t remember if I mentioned this already but I’ve been making banana pancakes with baby cereal or oatmeal, which are fortified w/ iron, that we bought in the beginning and barely used. One banana, one egg, 1/4 cup oatmeal. Does she like lentils?

piratecat I made those for DS after you posted about them and he loves them! Pancakes are a favorite around here. I froze a bunch and get them out if I need to keep him busy while I’m in the kitchen.

Yes! They are easy to make and I always throw leftovers in the freezer. We often bring them with us when we go out to brunch to round out whatever else we share with him. J loves them and they are relatively neat!

What brands and types of yogurt do you ladies give? I just found it yogurt is safe (dh was all nothing with cows milk!) so now I’m intrigued to give him some yogurt. (N is 7.5mo)

(N is 7.5mo) I get a big tub of Stoneyfield’s whole milk plain yogurt for myself anyway so that’s what he gets. I’ve been thinking about switching to Greek yogurt version just because I think it’s a little less messy for him to feed himself. We’ve also tried Happy Baby yogurt because sometimes it’s nice to have smaller containers but it is thinner than what I usually get and ends up being a big mess.

(N is 7.5mo) The gerber stuff in the baby aisle for DS1. The tubs are the same as the pouches as well. DS2 gets whatever the flaxseed stuff is sold at the grocery store, but he doesn’t eat yogurt often (milk intolerant)

(N is 7.5mo) I either use the YoBaby (I think it's Stonyfield) or whatever Greek yogurt I have on hand for myself. Greek is good for them to learn to use a spoon to feed themselves since it's thicker and won't slide off the spoon as easily.

babystandish I’m so happy you’re around! Butt in more often! The black bean pasta tastes like... black beans, which I don’t mind but the texture isn’t great and it’s brittle. I wanted to like them for myself but I hope the lentil kind is better and I’ll have to try the chickpea kind. I am glad that J liked it - pasta is an easy meal for us and I feel bad giving him too much pasta so this will be a good way to give him something more nutritious.

Haha the chickpea one has a different texture too, but it wasn’t bad tasting. I’ll probably butt in a little more. After getting injured after a race I decided I hate everyone even my good friends/family so I deactivated my Facebook LOL! It’s better to be safe and take a step back sometimes. It’s crazy how much running was my way to get away from it all.

I am kind of sad that many of our kiddos are turning 1 soon and the toddler board is not active. I know that this board isn't super active either but the sleep and eating threads have been really helpful and I have enjoyed hanging out here.

Sadly no. My dr thinks I’m about 50% healed right now. I have a stress reaction on both sides of my pubic bone and a labral hip tear. It’s definitely improving though.
