What do you picture when you imagine your retirement? Where do you live, with whom, what's your lifestyle like?

What do you picture when you imagine your retirement? Where do you live, with whom, what's your lifestyle like? Our plan is to buy/build a lake house in MI when our mortgage is paid off. We would also eventually like to sell this house and move downtown to a condo with perks. So basically, lake house for fresh air/yard, condo for convenience, easy lunching. But, architects don't retire... We expire.

We wanted to retire to Charleston, but we are inheriting a big house on Shelter Island, so maybe there. I want to write, travel, drink red wine, eat olives and cheese and volunteer to be a baby hugger in NICUs.
Really though, we will follow the kids. DH will get a nice pension and my retirment is on point. So, we will help them however they may want help.

Somewhere in the midst of a large-ish city where I don't have to personally maintain anything and have juuuuuusst enough space for my family to occasionally visit. I would prefer to go to them and, in general, travel often.
And maybe inherit 1/4 of a beach house in Hawaii.

We plan to have a small house hopefully close to where our kid end up. Hopefully the end up in the same state. All I want to do is travel, and be able to help my girls out.

I'm set to retire before 50 which seems to close yet so far. I hope to get out of here and end up somewhere warm. H keeps talking about buying something in Costa Rica. I want to always have a drink in hand and to always be laying in the sand or on a boat.. or whatever I decide that moment. Or....

I just want to live in a house on some land with horses and some goats and maybe a llama. SO would be growing all kinds of food. We wouldn't be too far out of the city though since I don't want to be in the middle of nowhere (thanks, Strangers).
We still won't have a dog. Inside at least.
This won't ever ever ever be in Canada thanks to all the bears that apparently hang out in backyards.

Ideally, we'd like to go up north to Washington (we're in the Bay Area now). I have lived in California my whole life and would love to get away from all the traffic, noise, costs, etc. MH went to college in WA and loves it there.

Mh and I spend May-October in Boston. We live in a fancy apartment near the Public Garden. We eat at yummy restaurants, see shows, drive up to Maine to go to the beach. November and December we live wherever our DD lives so we can spend the holidays with her. January through April we live in the Virgin Islands.

I would like a house on Isla Mujeres in Mexico and a townhouse/condo in my current city. I'd like to find a volunteer or PT job just for funsies and human interaction.
In a perfect world, we'd retire by 60-62 but who knows how realistic that is.

Lake house in Michigan for the summer and condo in South Carolina for the winter.
H will probably disappear in the garage for long periods of time tinkering as he likes to do and I will sit on the porch overlooking the lake reading as I like to do.
I would like to retire now.

Great question.
Ideally we'd like to still be in this house. If the opportunity comes up we'd buy surrounding acreage to add to what we already have. We have talked about backpacking across Europe or buying an RV and seeing America. H would probably do side work as a welder and I think depending where my kids were geographically and in life I'd help out with their kids as needed/wanted, maybe work a part time retail job.

H has dreams of a cabin on a lake when he retires. I have dreams of a smallish homestead farm. I could be swayed to the cabin, though. Since we're considering building in the next 10 or so years, my farm could happen sooner and then we could retire to his cabin later.

We want a small bit of land. In my fantasies there is a water view.No bears preferred. We'd like to custom build our own home with foresight re: ageing there. Location with a lot of accessibility and a hospital nearby is key. A library too. Close to a town with modern conveniences. In town would be fine too. Basically all we need is on the main, with 2 bedrooms up for our kids and grandkids to come stay. We like to putter around so my day would be something like: Feed chickens, collect fresh eggs (yes I look very good for 80, thank you) Bake some bread, pick some veggies, make jam, something like that. Read. Pop into town for errands. Need more wine. Come home, lunch, nap, then start dinner. Read while dinner cooks, then after dinner read or watch HBO. Take a nightly soak in my spa And sleep 8-10 hours uninterrupted.

We often talk about having a little condo in the city once the kids are out of the house, so we can enjoy all of the culture the city has to offer. I really love our small town, though. It's where I grew up and where my kids are growing up, and I think if I had to choose I would love to live there and be able to care for my grandchildren in my retirement, as my parents are doing now. A vacation home would be nice, somewhere the whole family can use and enjoy.

I hope we can travel and be near our kids. I want to be an amazing, involved Grandma. We will likely move to a smaller, easier to maintain place when our kids are grown. I wouldn't want a vacation home. I want to go somewhere new all the time.
