What always worked in our favor is living below our means. MH always feels like we should have a bigger house & I say why? This one meets our needs & it's no shack but nothing extravagant, by any means. It will be paid off in less than 10 years while the kids are in HS. So why would I want a bigger mortgage & bigger utility bills??? My favorite professor always ended the semester with a lecture to the youths and his favorite line was: "Live like no one else today... so that you can live like no one else later" ... basically fuck the whole 'keeping up with the joneses' idea and think long term 'Course he also used to talk about getting a 15 year mortgage in fuckin' southern CA and I think my ship has far sailed that possibility ever, but you know, he does make a good point otherwise. Haha

What do you picture when you imagine your retirement? Where do you live, with whom, what's your lifestyle like? Our plan is to buy/build a lake house in MI when our mortgage is paid off. We would also eventually like to sell this house and move downtown to a condo with perks. So basically, lake house for fresh air/yard, condo for convenience, easy lunching. But, architects don't retire... We expire. I could have written this word for word! Where in MI?

@spiff, DH is thinking somewhere near San Fran since he lived in that area for a short time growing up. That area is probably too expensive for retirement. I would like to be further south. Not sure exactly where. The Bay Area isn't just expensive for retirement, it's expensive to live here period! I spent the last week in Texas and was basically sobbing at what a comparable house costs there. I need to win the lottery! Wahhhh

It's very expensive here. The weather is great though.

We live in a low COL area so we would be really shocked by how much everything costs!

My retirement dreams are pretty simple. Probably just a condo in the city near DD. Preferably near lots of good restaurants.

This is fun to think about and also makes me realize I should talk to dh about this some more...
I grew up in the country and always had this dream to live in La or NYC so I think I'd like to live one or both of those places for a short time (6 months - 2 years). Dh can work anywhere on a temp basis so he could work a day a week if he wanted to. Maybe keep our house during this time and travel a lot. Dh loves the beach so probably get a beach house somewhere and a home base type place that might be based on where kid(s) end up. I'd like to be close to grandkids if possible but don't really want to stay in the smallish Midwest town I live on so hopefully they all move somewhere awesome and bear each other... one can hope. Probably retire in 50s.

I want an apartment in Philly, Bermuda and one other place (maybe Reykjavik, maybe London). I want to write books from my balcony while drinking coffee and enjoying the view.
My husband and I will travel between the three places during the year.

We have three places on our retirement list - Alaska (Anchorageish area), Arizona (Williams) and Idaho (Boiseish). We have a dream of being able to build our own home which would be designed to be as close to zero energy as possible, IDK how reasonable that will be. We are saving very aggressively towards that end, though.

SO told me today he hopes to allow us both to retire early and move back to New Zealand.
I told him that was fine with me but I need a travel stipend and a life insurance plan for a widow's nest in Paris for whenever he kicks the bucket.

DH wants 10 acres just outside of Charleston for a pecan/fruit orchard and farm for sheep, chickens, turkeys, and llamas. I'm more looking for a cute little townhouse in Charleston proper with a decent yard for a small garden. Bicycles and mopeds would be the only way to travel.

It changes but most recently I would like a beach front condo where all of the maintenance is taken care of. Now to decide if I want a sunset or sunrise every day... the hard choices.

I want to live in a gorgeous old house with gardens. I want to throw fabulous parties "because it's getting toward dusk" as my grandma used to say....really be a social hub for my friends. Throw showers and weddings and birthday and anniversary parties for my children and my friend's children. Host huge holiday shindigs for anyone who needs to feel family or who wants to have a good time. I want to cook and celebrate all the damn time.
My 90 year old grandmother in law still rents a house with her college roommates for a week. Now they also hire a "cabana boy" who "cooks for us, makes us drinks and puts us to bed when we are drunk so we don't fall and break a hip." I want to be her.

Ideally a condo/TH in a NE city (Philadelphia or Boston) so I have a home base to use for skiing and a condo somewhere islandy like Key West.

I've been thinking this over more since yesterday and have decided that I would like to go to a new city for a month every year, rent an AirBNB or something similar and just experience the city in a relaxed local sort of way. I'd love to go to Paris, London, Hong Kong, Singapore, Sydney and pretty much every where else. This along with either a beach house or several beach vacations per year. All while keeping our current house and being near our hypothetical grandkids.

The only aspect of retirement I have thought about is the $$. Our goal is to live off of the interest earned from retirement accounts alone, pay everything with cash, and leave behind a good chunk to family.
I don't want to pick where I live based on where family lives. I'll want to just budget travel expenses for getting to them or getting them to me.
Ideally, one central house somewhat close to city, and one house that is either in mountains, by a beach, or by a nice lake. I want to provide a place for people to make their own fun memories. I think this stems from my love to host.

I just want to live in a house on some land with horses and some goats and maybe a llama. SO would be growing all kinds of food. We wouldn't be too far out of the city though since I don't want to be in the middle of nowhere (thanks, Strangers). We still won't have a dog. Inside at least. This won't ever ever ever be in Canada thanks to all the bears that apparently hang out in backyards. I have no bears in my backyard but could accommodate all the other things so come on up. Bring your toque.

I dream off a little cottage near a beach, being a super involved grandparent and hopefully volunteering.
