My 3 year old still sleeps this way.. it’s definitely not comfortable Whyyyyy do they do it? I just want to straighten him out but I don't dare touch him when he sleeps. I love when they sleep like this with their butts up in the air! My 2.5 year old sleeps like this quite often too.

I think the butt-in-the air sleeping is adorable. As soon as DS1 could roll over he slept like that, and now DS2 sleeps the same. I'm sure it helps get any gas out too so they can sleep like that forever for all I care.
FWIW DS1 stopped sleeping like that after maybe 2 or 3. Now at 5 he sleeps spread eagle on his back 🤷

thechickencoop ha you have the right attitude! We are all sick but J went to bed at 7:30 and woke up at his usual time at 12:30 when I would normally nurse him but only fussed for a couple minutes before falling asleep. He woke up an hour later and fussed again for a couple minutes and fell asleep again and then woke up at 3:30 wanting to nurse. I don't know if it's a fluke or what. I've been trying to wean him off the 3AM feeding (slow going though because he's been sick) but I guess maybe we'll wean off the midnight feeding first instead? And maybe eventually he'll sleep through at some point? But of course I couldn't sleep last night so I feel like a zombie today.

I've been stalking this thread as we do SLIP training with DS (5.5mo), and I have a question about day sleep.
We cannot get this kid to lengthen wake times during the day. At exactly 2 hours, he starts rubbing his eyes, and within 5 minutes he is OVER it and wants to pass out. But all the day sleep is giving us less night sleep and super early AWAKE AND READY TO PARTY mornings. Any tips for getting more wake time? His DCP has been great to work with on all of this and will go with me on whatever I want to try.

Can you keep the first wake time on the short side 2 hours) and then lengthen to 2.25 on the next and aim for 2.5 before bed? Usually you have to distract a lot to get them through. One of the PLS admins posted a video of her son acting SOOOOOO sleepy, but she pushed through. Otherwise, he wouldn’t nap long enough. She basically said that her kid spends all day trying to convince her that it’s time to sleep.

piratecat The PLS guideline is to wean the earliest feed first because sleep pressure is higher, which means that it’s typically “easier.”

She basically said that her kid spends all day trying to convince her that it’s time to sleep. Thanks. We'll have to play with this a bit. The biggest issue is the before-bed stretch. I get him from school at 5:15, and that last nap of the day is hit or miss on timing. Sometimes, like last night, he ends up being awake for 4 hours before bed because the last nap was weird and it would have been harder to take a mini nap at home in between. His teachers do the best they can to keep him on a schedule, but it can really depend on the classroom dynamics that day as to how the day ends. And I selfishly want him awake at my lunch hour so I can go nurse, but we'll give that up if we have to.

piratecat Yeah, I guess depending on what time you go to bed, the first feed should get you the longest stretch of uninterrupted sleep. If he seems to be dropping that feed on his own, I say go with that!

It’s been a long drawn out weaning process with him being sick but he’s on the mend and I am so ready.

I really fucking hate dealing with newborn sleep.
And toddler sleep. I'm not looking forward to that again.
BUT DS1 is 5 and sleeps like it's his job then goes and gets himself a snack and plays with legos in the mornings so...THAT, I'm looking forward to.

pepperpottsj, I'm glad you got some sleep! We are kind of in a similar boat, a long drawn out sleep training/MOTN weaning due to illnesses, traveling, it's always something. We're on night 4 of weaning MOTN feedings. He has his 9 month appt tomorrow and I know the pediatrician will ask how he's sleeping so hopefully I will have something promising to report. I am still trying to get my shit together and I didn't have to move! Come hang out more! It's slow but I am always checking and up for livening things up again. How's that sister of yours?

Thank you! It’s still not perfect, he wakes up 2-3 times a night, but it’s so much better than it was. Good luck weaning MOTN feeds. Sometimes I feel like I’ll be doing those still when he’s starting college. 😆

We were stuck at 2-3 times a night for a long time (and sometimes worse). 5 nights in he is still waking up to complain but falling back asleep after a few minutes. Progress.......

GUYS, J slept for 9 hours and 27 minutes straight last night with nary a peep and woke up at 5AM to nurse. I think we have successfully weaned off all night feedings (it's been 2 weeks) and he also has been going down without any fussing or crying. *KNOCK ON WOOD*

He is still sleeping in the PnP in our room (we've been sleeping in the guest room for the past 2 weeks) so I do need to transition him to the crib in his room. Is that going to be a pain? He hasn't slept in his crib for many months (he used to nap in there but hasn't in a while) and he mostly uses it to play with toys for short amounts of time when we need to go to the bathroom or something. Any tips? Anecdotes?

piratecat, DS recently moved to his crib with zero problems. I think he was actually excited about having more room than in the PNP. He can roll and wiggle and flail around to settle. I was pleasantly surprised with him.

I was pleasantly surprised with him. J wiggles around and usually ends up sleeping huddling in the corner or lying along the short side of the PnP. He'll have so much room in the crib, I hope he'll like it!

FX he doesn't even notice the change!

I’m so nervous. We are going out of town this weekend for the first time since we started sleep training. We are all going to be in the same room again, but I’m almost considering letting the baby have the room and we’ll sleep in the living room. We will be at my BILs.
I just hope this doesn’t undo all of what we’ve accomplished. But, we travel a lot, so it’ll just be what it will be I guess.

We've traveled some since he started sleeping better and was worried but he did pretty well. I think I nursed him earlier than usual a few times. We are traveling this weekend too though and he's been waking a lot more with the teething so I'm anxious about how he might do.
