We’ve had a huge setback with with family visiting and also maybe more teething. We’ve had to co sleep a lot and even then he was waking constantly last night. We had made so much progress and I’m so bummed about having to start all over.

We had a big backslide, where she was up every hour. Then DH convinced me she was cold (I'm still running hot, and some days I think I'm warmer than I was while pregnant) and we turned up the heat. It was like a switch flipped - she went from 5-6 wakeups to 2. But then she got sick, and we traveled, and now we're back to 3-4 wakeups. I know she's going through a big developmental phase - she went from mostly cooing to babbling in the last week. And I know to some extent I made my own mess by nursing her to sleep for so long. But now some of her wakeups are clearly not about food, because she'll let me shush or bounce her to sleep if she has been awake a lot. She's almost 9 months now and I'd like to get more than 4 hours of continuous sleep ASAP.

I've basically stopped reading any online sleep advice. The internet is evil and designed to make me feel like a shit mother. I am much more at peace now. How is Miss F doing? Is the plan from the sleep consultant working?

@icedtea do you have a secret to good napping? We try and stick to a schedule but he is so hit or miss. Does the schedule kind of just stick after a while?

We are fine as long she's not awake longer than ~2 hours. If it gets much past that, then we're screwed. So we try to start getting her asleep once she's been up for about 1.5 hours. We do most naps in the swing. Maybe I just need to try putting him down earlier. He doesn’t even seem to be overtired, he just doesn’t fall asleep. After a while I give up and he is happy as can be. And then he might be a bit fussier than usual and earlier at night but he actually falls asleep easier. It might affect his night time wakings, I’m not sure. Like today he took one nap (1 hour) in the morning, one failed nap, one catnap in the Ergo on a walk, another failed nap and he was a little fussy at bedtime but fell asleep as soon as I laid him down at 7. 🤷🏻♀️

Reading all this with lots of interest. Feeling like I f-ed something up somewhere because my 3yo WILL NOT stay in bed at bedtime. He's usually only up once or so overnight but bedtime, between him and the baby, is a 2 hr + struggle of jack-in-the-box syndrome. He's not upset, doesn't cry, just won't stay the F in bed.
The baby's doing ok - and by ok I mean nursing to sleep a lot of the time and cosleeping second half of night. I should start weaning off the second half of night cosleeping, I just don't miss staying awake for nursing/getting babies back down to sleep after wake ups - gonna mean less sleep for me in the short run :/
I seriously want to punch the author of every article that's like, just lay them down drowsy!! Yeah that makes mine either wake up totally and want to party, or cry hard, and we're back to square 1. (And this is prob why my 3yo won't stay in bed.)
Sleep is a real bitch.

@icedtea maybe I need to try the swing again for the afternoon naps. He hates getting strapped in most of the time so it’s hard to get him calmed down and asleep but he did sleep well in it for a while. irish14 yea I can’t lay J down drowsy either. If he cries I pick him back up to calm him down and try again but if he’s just awake I let him squirm around for a bit before coming back to try and soothe him to fall asleep in the crib. It works when it works. Obviously don’t take any sleep advice from me. We are starting the day off with a 35 minute nap today.

irish14 lock him in. Seriously. Best thing we ever did was put a knob lock on so he couldn’t open it. He can play with toys, but he can’t leave his room until the light turns green. I’ve seen others have luck with just threatening to shut the door. DS1 has always had his door shut thoug

irish14 (hugs) I have no advice as a FTM, but I remember my parents telling me that I was the same way sometimes. I still remember scaring the crap out of my dad in the middle of the night by standing quietly next to the bed until he woke up. So creepy. We had to ditch the swing recently due to DS's size and increased mobility. RIP swing. I will miss you. Luckily, though, he's doing pretty well in the crib. If he fusses more than 5-10 minutes, then MH just jiggles the mattress for a minute or two and that seems to settle him. We seem to be in the midst of the 3-2 nap transition, and OMG it's so awkward. It works pretty well at home for the most part, but daycare is tough. We're having success with wake times of 2.5 hours, then 3 hours, then 3.5 hours before bed. Sometimes he does need a 10 minute catnap at the end of the day, though, if the second nap ends too early. I'm hoping things will be easier when we can change to a by the clock nap schedule. We were having an extra MOTN waking for a couple of days due to a cough (I blame family from Thanksgiving), but he seems to be getting back on track now. I definitely nursed earlier than usual a few times. Heck, I had probably the same cough and had to drink a bunch of water at night sometimes, so I just flexed a bit and figured that he might be thirsty too. I also didn't want him to get too worked up and make the cough worse... I hate how long these things linger. Poor baby 😕

@starzia "Wrong" is bs, imo. What works for one baby totally doesn't for another.... it's all trial and error til something works or til you start pulling hair out... It's 10 and my toddler's still tossing so yeah. I'm choosing to not get pissed and instead catch up on my interneting. Though sleep would be great at some point...

irish14 true thanks. Hope you did get some sleep. If you didn’t sleep is for the weak anyways yeah he fell asleep at 1030. My bedtime should be earlier than my 3yo at this point...

@starzia, how are things going now?
I am trying to formulate a new plan. Maybe an interim plan for the rest of the year since we'll be traveling a lot and then a more serious plan starting in the new year. I don't know. It's been getting increasingly harder to get him to nap and for him to stay asleep longer at night so I'm feeling like I need to take more drastic measures. I did let J "fuss" (okay he was crying for a lot of the time) for 10-15 minutes for this morning's nap and he slept for an hour.

@starzia My son has been sleep trained with the PLS method for a couple of months now, and for naps and nights, he still fusses/cries/babbles for 5-10 minutes before he passes out. It's just part of his process of winding down. It made me super uncomfortable at first, but now I'm very familiar what the act of going to sleep looks like for him. He'll occasionally just roll over onto his tummy and go to sleep peacefully at bedtime, but that's not the norm.

@starzia that’s great! I think 2-3 MOTN feedings at her age is still normal and it’s great that she is sleeping well the rest of the time.
Second nap went great with only 6 minutes of hardly fussing so I’m into it. Now I’m trying to decide if I should FIO at bedtime tonight or if I should let him figure out one thing at a time. I know that PLS says to tackle bedtime before naps but he does much better falling asleep on his own at night most of the time, he just doesn’t stay asleep long. I’ve been thinking the pacifier might be the problem or the fact that he doesn’t nap very well.

piratecat That's great! Most people struggle more with naps because daytime sleep is just tough. The biologic compulsion to sleep is strong at bedtime, so I bet he'll do great! For us, the pacifier was definitely the problem. DS had at least 2 additional wakings on top of normal feeds. Some babies eventually learn how to reinsert it themselves, but I was just over it. He's done great without the pacifier so far and still uses it at daycare without causing any issues at home.

My DD (the little one) is doing better (KNOCK ON ALL THE WOOD) but DS (the toddler) is getting stubborn again about sleep... we shall see... jack in the box over here tonight again

J slept pretty ok last night, definitely a big improvement. Naps today weren’t great and definitely not as magical as they were yesterday. Bedtime went alright though so we’ll see. He’s still getting over his cold so I’m hoping we’ll continue to see improvement.

I had been letting DD take a late nap because it wasn't interfering with bedtime. Plus, once I started allowing it, she went from 3-4 wake ups to 1-2.
But bedtime has been an ordeal the last few nights. She's at the right age to drop the third nap. But it's going to be hard to keep her awake since she often falls asleep on the train or the walk home. We'll see how it goes tomorrow.

They drop it somewhere between 8-10 months. It usually coincides with another sleep regression, except unlike the 4 month one, it’s just a phase and doesn’t affect their permanent sleep cycles

Has anyone somebody sleep training to lessen motn wake ups AND switched where the baby slept at the same time?
N is a disaster and had gotten so much worse in the last month or so, to the point where he only sleeps in his rnp for th first bit and then on me or next to me or on DH the rest of the night.
We need to start sleep training for real- we’ve got a bedtime routine down, and it works most days, but he does not stay asleep. And we want to transition him to the pnp. I just bought PLS book to speed read tomorrow but I have like a day to convince DH not to do CIO bc I cant handle it. I need a gentler method and he’s all gung-ho about cio 😒
