trueblue, ugh, I'm sorry. It's been tough with my 7YO lately and I haven't pulled the trigger on therapy yet. I've been wondering about reaching out to his school counselor to see if there's anything they could do for him at school, although he is a model student there.

We are in week 4 and it’s already insanely busy. We have extra events on the calendar every week between now and October break. I had no idea how busy just middle school band could make you. High school band next year will make this all seem like nothing though. DD is thriving. Being busy is good for her! She loves all her teachers this year and is genuinely happy. Going to try to enjoy it because this year is going to fly.

It's getting cooler in the evenings and mornings (50s overnight, 60s in the morning) and I've got my sweatshirt and thick socks on and every year I wonder how I am going to survive winter.

My DS starts hockey on Thursday and it’s skate trials. Reading the format and the grading, it’s intense and I just want to tell them to skip it and put him in whatever the lowest ranked division is because he’s brand new. The 5 skate session with up and down grading seems like a lot of pressure

We've had 2 weeks of school and DS has strep. Really hoping that's not an indicator for how the rest of the year is gong to go.

This is week 3 (well, 2.5) but the schedule change I requested before school started finally happened so it was a mini redo of day 1 for DS. He only has 3 classes from his original schedule. I feel bad but the schedule change was for an elective class he really needs (AVID if anyone knows that program) so I’m just apologizing to him and moving on.
It’s also day 10 and he texted me from the bus stop that he lost his transit card and school id. I let H know and he said “hmmm, 10 days, we had a good run”. lol.

My foster dog has two meetings this week and is likely going to be adopted. Which is the goal.
But I’m not going to lie - I’m going to be so sad. She is the best foster I’ve ever had and I will miss her sweet face. I’m just trying to concentrate on making her proud by getting her an awesome forever home. But I keep snuggling with her and telling her I love her so much and she will always be my baby.

Today was the first day of school for my kids (NY always brings in the rear). 8th, 5th.
DD is psyched that she is in her last year of middle school. Almost all her friends are on her team, so she is going to have a great year.
DS is in the ICT class and one of the teachers was his resource teacher last year, so he already feels comfortable. Also, he has a lot of friends in class, so I think it will be great.

September is MH's busiest month at work so I'm not looking forward to it. Lots of stress for him. Kindergarten is going well for DS though. And we decorated for Halloween over the weekend and got a bunch of new stuff. I found out my H ordered the 7 ft skele-dog from Home Depot when I was texted the shipping notification. No idea why his account is linked to my phone number, though years and years ago we traded numbers back and forth so he could get the phone upgrades (this was pre smart phones and I didn't care about having the latest phone) so it's quite possible it's a holdover from then. In any case, the "suprise" was ruined. And here I was, wondering why he was now insisting that the 12 ft skele would have to be put up standing instead of looking like it's coming out of the roof like years past. 😏

I'm really enjoying the chill in the air, but then I'm a crazy person that also likes the winter/snow.* *caveat being that we do not live in the tundra, I would probably feel differently if we had months upon months of multiple feet of snow

The 5 skate session with up and down grading seems like a lot of pressure I hate how much sports/extracurricular activity pressure is placed on kids in general these days. I had to actively hunt to find a dance studio for my daughter that wasn't super intense. So many had the attitude of if you haven't been dancing ballet since 3, you shouldn't even bother, which is just ridiculous.

My kid started 10th grade last week. He’s not a fan of school but said most of his teachers were ‘pretty cool”. No fall sports so he’s looking into a part time job and is on a club baseball team that does player development all fall.
For randoms: H got his oil changed today and they don’t put the plug back in the oil pan correctly and now there is oil dripping out of the undercarriage and onto our driveway, so that’s super fun.

Our school year so far is not what I expected. We are on week three.
My new job is actually not remotely what I went to school for last year. Shortest version possible is that a friend poached me right after graduation to come work for him at a nonprofit after school organization. We're in two school districts, including the one DS attends, so he switched to be "with me," although my job is in the office. When my friend took over as director the organization exploded in the best possible way, and we are running around like chickens with our heads cut off to keep up. I am currently driving a transit van to pick up at DS's school and one other elementary almost every afternoon. It's horrible and also so fun and very exhausting.

SD has hardly talked to us because she is so busy being a Cool College Kid. I set up Marco Polo on DS's tablet so the two of them can talk more often.

We need to figure out what we're doing to close our pool. First year having it and we're in that weird in between time where it's too cold to swim but I still think a little too early to close it. So basically we're cleaning and running a pump on something no one is using right now 🤣

We only have short blow ups unfortunately. I can't get MH to get behind the tall ones. I'll live vicariously through you lol

DS started grade 4 today and got the same teacher as last year who is the BEST.
He also somehow managed to have all 5 of his close friends in his class; I can’t even imagine what it’s going to be like in there on a daily basis 🤪
And the first official hockey practice was tonight and I had to pick him up early from school. I am literally terrified at what the schedule is going to be this year.

We still have 2 days before we’re back to school. But my kids have spent the last 2 1/2 weeks on the other side of the world, so we’re just trying to get back on our time zone so they don’t crash on the first day of school.

We are in our 4th week of charter/homeschool and finally in a good routine. 1st and 4th grader. It's National Parks Pass year for us and I made my reservation for Yosemite in two weeks!

10th and 5th over here, we've been back for 2.5 weeks. The 10th grader always does fine, his start has been ok. The 5th grader has diagnosed anxiety disorder and has a really tough time socially, but his new teacher seems to be a good fit for him. I'm working on getting him a new therapist and possibly exploring medication for the first time this year.
Both my boys hate school. It's all they talk about. It's so hard for me to identify because I loved school and I'm a very positive, optimistic person. I find it really draining to have to listen to how much they hate it all the time.

Updates: transit card and school ID have been located. They were in a Pokemon tin in the playroom. Because of course.
Foster dogs meet and greet today was fantastic. I am crossing everything that things line up and she goes to this lady. She was just a great fit and foster dog was the bestest girl in front of her (which still maintaining her personality including chasing a squirrel and eating cheddar goldfish off a picnic blanket that luckily belonged to my friend).

Creepy internet hugs, CurlieWhirlie. You might remember I deal with school-related negativity from my teacher husband who I can say suck it up buttercup to but that's a different ballgame than hearing it from your kids. I hope you find what your 5th grader needs sooner than later!

I was just there last weekend. Weather was perfection. The falls were low/non existent (not shocking given it was august).

DS has been back for 3 weeks. Last year of middle school. Had a little bit of a rough spot- a classmate passed away. During the announcement someone mistook DS's reaction as mocking the kid who died, so that was super. One kid pushed him down on the walk home from school the next day. He was a bit of a mess for the next week and things were getting said in the halls/lunch/during PE.
I am impressed by the admin/counseling staff at the school. They have such a good set up for handling things. Obviously it won't work in every case, but it led to a pretty good outcome in this one. So we are hoping that the long weekend gave everyone something else to focus their energy on.
The counselor also gave us some info on some high school focus programs that might be good for DS so we will see what we decide there.
