How was your August? What did you love or hate? And what are you looking forward to this month?

I read a lot of graphic novels in August as that fit really well to our vacation plans and the time I had available and it was just fun to get back into them although they were a total mixed bag.

I also read a few books and my highlights were
Horror: Fever House by Keith Rosson
Fantasy: A Sorceress Comes to Call by T. Kingfisher
Romance: The Love of my Afterlife by Kirsty Greenwood

This month I'm looking forward to reading the sequel to Fever House; The Devil By Name, Jason Pargin's newest; I'm Starting to Worry About This Black Box of Doom, and I'm finally being forced into trying out A Court of Thorns and Roses as we're reading it for my book club.

I literally only read one book last month. Weyward, and it was great. This month a bunch of my holds already came in so I’m working on Just For The Summer and also started a Jenny Lawson book my boss recommended to me called Furiously Happy. Her writing is a little “stream of consciousness from an ADHD sufferer” for me, so we’ll see how this goes.

August was busy busy for me reading wise. A combination of more time than usual in the car (so I could listen to audio books) more time awake in the middle of the night (worrying about dropping my kid off the college), and a bunch of library holds.

I’m just about done with Network Effect (MurderBot), and it’s going to be a 4 or 5 star. I have The Bright Sword, Dark Matter, and Weyward in my Libby right now. Told you library holds are coming in fast and furious.

I’m looking forward to The Third Gilmore Girl, the new Liane Moriarty, the new TJ Klune, and the new Matt Haig this month. I’m also excited to get some fall themed cozy mysteries to read in between.

I read 12 books in August and honestly most of them were really good. My top favorites were Worst Case Scenario by T J Newman, The Family Experiment by John Marrs, and Zero Stars, Do Not Recommend by M J Wassmer. Least favorites were The Haters by Robyn Harding and The Love of My Afterlife by Kirsty Greenwood but those were still both 3 stars.

August was a slow month for me, I thought I’d have more time to read on vacation but it was the opposite and I barely read anything. I finished 4 books (2 audio and 2 physical)

I loved it. Fantastic horror. It was almost a 5 star for me.

Books I read in August...

August was pretty good. I’m still on a fantasy kick and I don’t know why. The Sheperd King series, the Seven Year Slip and Worst Case Scenario were my favorites. I’m surprised One Star Romance isn’t being talked about more because I really liked it.

For September I’m ready to start some fall/Halloween reads. As for new releases, I’m excited for The Night We Lost Him by Laura Dave, We Solve Murders by Richard Osmond and The Third Gilmore Girl.

I was able to read/listen to a lot in August due to a lot of work travel and a surgery recovery so I got 21 books in. It was a mixed bag with a lot of 3 stars but a good amount of 4s as well. My favorite was Sleeping Giants by Rene Denefeld. I love her books. I also really enjoyed the Ruby Preston series by Caroline Mitchell.

I’m hoping to read some good horrors the next couple of months but it all depends what my holds list does. I’m at the mercy of the library!

I got a physical copy of Immortal Dark as an ARC at book Con. I haven’t read it yet but it’s on my list.

I am currently reading The Serpent and the Wings of Night. So far I like it a lot but I am only 60ish pages in.

August was another weak month for me with only 2 completed books.

Virgnia Grohl's From the Cradle to the Stage. 5 stars.

Sara Mark's With Love from Northanger Park, Katie. 3.5 stars. It's a cute Disney themed adaptation of Austen's Northanger Abbey for Austen August but terribly edited. I'm about halfway through the audio book for the original Northanger Abbey.

I started The Berlin Letters by Katherine Reay on Friday, and it's good so far.

I DNF Pride and Prejudice (again), The Other Valley, ADHD is Awesome! or The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. I will get back to all of them eventually. I need to start putting some autumn/fall books on hold!

Like a year ago, I started following a woman on TikTok just for her dogs, Tess and Stuntman Mike. I had never read an Abby Jimenez book before so I never put two and two together until recently, but omg they are her dogs! And did you know she one Cupcake Wars? She runs a cupcake shop and even mentions it in Just For The Summer.

I finished Butcher And Blackbird and The Book Of Azreal yesterday. I made a small dent in The Throne of Broken Gods. My reading will take a hit since school starts back up on Wednesday. I won't have as much daytime reading time and I won't be able to stay up nearly as late. I'm at 91 books for the year though, with a goal of 100, so I'm feeling fine about it.

Anyway, I finished two in August.

Untamed by Glennon Doyle. 5⭐️ way late to this party because I had made assumptions about the author that were way wrong. I absolutely loved it.

Sure, I’ll Join Your Cult by Maria Bamford. 4⭐️ she’s such an odd duck but I really enjoy her even though sometimes her comedy makes me wince, lol.

I’m currently reading four and really hoping I can finish them all in September.

I don’t read nearly as many books as most people in this thread. I always remind myself that I read because I like it and what other people consume has no effect on my enjoyment. So I don’t think about how many other people read anymore.

My August was just Jane Austen (and I need to do a wrap up in that thread lol I am so late XP) - but I finally gave star ratings to them! This is this year's ranking:

1. P&P - 5 stars
2. Persuasion - 5 stars
3. Sense & Sensibility - 4.5 stars
4. Mansfield Park - 4 stars
5. Emma - 4 stars
6. Northanger Abbey - 3.5 stars

I also finished one audio book last month, Murder on the Links by Agatha Christie. I think I gave it 3 or 3.5 stars, I can't remember off the top of my head.

Unfortunately for me/my TBR, I have 3 library books that need to be returned by 9/9. I hadn't planned on all 3 of them coming available at the same time in August, but I'll do my best. I was able to finish one yesterday, The Wilds by Sarah Pearse (the third Elin Warner book - sequel to The Sanatorium and The Retreat). Starting The Astrology House by Carinn Jade today, and Darling Girls by Sally Hepworth is the last one I need to finish by Monday. I'm still mid Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware, but that's renewable so it can wait a bit.

cnf, I'm curious as to what you thought of Powerless and Reckless. They've been getting a lot of hype but I was very annoyed with Reckless. I know it's YA but it still seemed idk, immature, to me.
