We’ve used walkie talkies to communicate with DS (9) the past couple of years while he’s out playing in our neighborhood. His friend also had a set he used with his parents.
All that changed this week with another family getting a set and then the kids deciding they want to talk to each other. It was cute the first day and now omg 1. The chatter and noise making is incessant 2. I hate hearing the other parents talk to their kids like I’m eavesdropping. I’m cringing so much and I don’t want people hearing what I’m saying either!
I know. FWP and it’s really not a big deal but I’m so uncomfortable now.

True to form my schedule at one of my school's suck. I am just bitter at that school for various reasons--some that makes sense, some that don't. That school luckily I am only at 2 days a week--but it gives me anxiety. This year I only teach one section of 4th grade and one of 5th grade---I hate lesson planning for ONE class in a grade level. I also teach kindergarten health-which I am not a fan of since I am not a health teacher--I am media/tech teacher. I don't have any first grade (which is actually my favorite grade) and I have three self contained autistic classes. Plus, I have first period prep and early lunch--which means teaching 4 classes in a row which is completely mentally draining.

TW: Cancer
When we visited my mom last week, she was having some stomach issues that were worrisome. For context, she had breast cancer at 39, had a double mastectomy and radiation, and was in remission for over 20 years, and was re diagnosed with the same cancer 7 years ago only in her bones. She has been on a drug that has held it steady and it hasn’t spread, which is truly remarkable. But, we don’t expect that to be the case forever. She didn’t have much of an appetite, and lost quite a bit of weight, and I was honestly very worried the cancer had started spreading.
She had a PET scan yesterday, and they got the results to her today- there was no change! I am so relieved. I don’t think I wanted to admit to myself how worried I was. It may also be that her scan fell on the 5 year anniversary of FIL’s passing from cancer that took him a lot more quickly than anyone was anticipating.
Speaking of, my MIL went to a medium yesterday that she went to shortly after FIL’s death. I don’t typically believe in things like that, but I’m choosing to believe in this one. She asked if MIL had a grandson, and she said yes. The medium said that FIL held him before he was born, and that he is always watching over them. ❤️ DS has a natural caring for others that FIL had, and I wish I could take credit for it, but it definitely doesn’t come from me. 😂

We had such an amazing afternoon celebrating my grandma at the baseball game. They read the entry I made for her and it was just such a special afternoon. Definitely the highlight of my summer!

This week has been so jacked up. SO had surgery for basal cell last week and got lifting restrictions. His coach at work said it would be fine, but then when he got there last week, they sent him home and said he couldn't work until Sedgwick approved light duty. We've been battling all week to get them to approve it and he still can't work.

DD started sixth grade Monday, but her school is 5/6 so she is used to a schedule, walking to her classes, etc.
All the kids are super annoyed about testing, though. 3 days this week and 2 days next week of testing. Ugh. The poor teachers too.

We are trying to get DD ready for college and it is proving difficult.
They emailed her last week and said that she would be placed in a hotel for now for housing. Ok fine, we were just going to make sure she had what she needed for a hotel room. Now today, they have assigned her a dorm suite and I am scrambling to make a list of what she will need now.

Do you have a picture of the layout List: Bedding Shower things Any supplies she likes for studying Laptop Organizers for under the bed Fan Hangers Snacks Cutlery set Bowl/plate set Cups Mini fridge

They are only allowed one microwave per room. Dorms in the way back times used to not allow any micro and only 1 mini fridge that you had to rent from the school. Guess they redid the electricity in the whole dorms on campus and now they get a fridge and micro in each room from the school. And the way the beds can be rearranged lofted or stacked is pretty nice Hope she gets a nice room with great roommate. The biggest suggestion I can give is there's never enough drawers on the dorms. The desk had no drawers so the plastic drawers were super handy to just load up with office supplies, power strip, desk lamp etc and was easy to just have it right there all ready to go. Saw a heck of a lot of those drawers move in move out. Girls seemed to always have one for their makeup and toiletries some had them loaded with snacks and kitchen supplies.

Yep. 3 days of benchmarks this week and 2 days of MAP next week. Worst. Imagine how much learning they could do if they didn't spend sooo much time testing? Esp end of year testing and beginning of year both. With a small bit of spiral review I'm betting anything forgotten over the summer can be more readily recalled instead of taking them from no school summertime directly into let's see what you know testing. Gosh

McBenny , yikes! When does she move in? Since she just got a room assignment and you have to sign up for a move in time, we have nothing left but Monday at 2pm. I am trying to calm myself at this moment.

Especially on weekends when dining isn’t always open

I wish I could come help but I know you got this! I had a feeling this dumb shit would happen. What she needs in a hotel and what she needs in a dorm room is totally different. I am scrambling to update her Amazon wish list because some family wanted to get her gifts for graduation, and she did a wish list and told them they could buy off of there if they wanted too. We didn't have dorm things on there yet. Oh well. I had her ready for a hotel move in and to find this out today 4 days out, I am trying to calm myself. The most important is for her to have her bed and shower things I guess, and I can bring or send her more things later (at least this is what I am telling myself).

Yes those are the most important things to me honestly! That first week or so there will be so much going on that she may not spend a ton of time in there. Plus being there she may think of things she needs more than some of the other stuff on the lists they send

C started middle school yesterday and I have been more nervous about the transition than she is. We went to campus Tuesday night with her friends to walk around and find all of their classrooms and when we said goodbye she told them she wasn't going to see them the next day because she was moving to Canada instead of starting school. She came home yesterday all smiles and said she loved all of her teachers and her classes and was going to make sure she got at least a B in her math and science classes. She met a new friend who is in all of her classes and before bed last night she said that she couldn't wait to go back today. I'm so happy that she is happy.

Bring a pool noodle and zip ties. You zip tie the noodle to the length of the bed so that your phone or other stuff doesn't fall down the side. Especially helpful if the beds are lofted.

SD packed less than I thought she would have, because truly they don't NEED much to start. Bedding, towels, and toiletries for sure. All the chargers (SD realized she forgot the charger to her electric razor, for example). So much else will depend on what kind of room she's in and what the school provides. Have her sign up for Target's student discount so she can get 20% off anything she realizes she needs in the next week or so.

If its family I'd tell them to send amazon gift cards cause her situation has changed and you are scrambling. they can say spend this on bedding or towels or snacks or whatever and you'll try to do it, but family is usually pretty nice about that stuff. Different from hotel, more clothes, towels, bedding, stuff to use micro and fridge if she wasn't going to do so before. Maybe one of those instant hot kettles and a case of ramen lol.
