notblanche I was thinking about the mask wearing for the twins as well. They will be starting at a center based daycare in January and they will be 20.5 months at that point. I don't think the center requires masks until over 3, so I might be able to get away with only doing masks in public settings for a while. I'm a little nervous for compliance because they only go to the doctor and to get haircuts in public so they really don't see people in masks often. But maybe seeing their daycare teachers in masks will help them get more used to it.

I'm so annoyed.
Last week H and DD2 had a cold. They both tested negative for covid. Now DD1 has a cold. She went to school yesterday and her teacher was pretty unphased that DD1 was boogery because she masked, sanitized, and encouraged other kids to keep their distance from her. Today I wanted to send her because of everything she was doing to try to do right, but H insisted she stay home, because it was a half day and she is sick. I put in her attendance at 6am.at 12:30 the nurse calls to verify I marked her sick and tell me she can't come back until she has a doctor clearance or ten day quarantine. I explain about having gotten negative covid tests just a few days ago in our house. Too bad, protocol. Try to call MIL who is with her, no answer. Call H, who now has to leave work and go get her and take her to the pediatrician. No problem, they run PCR in office and have an hour turn around. NOPE. National testing supply shortage, they had to loan out their machine and now have to send out tests, 48 hour wait. So now my kid, who has a minor head cold that in normal times kids would have to gone to school with, is out for multiple days. She feels fine minus some congestion and snot. And she has to miss her school Halloween party. And she had to get a brain poke when she thought she'd just have a chill day with MIL. And H has to go into work tonight to get stuff done for tomorrow because now he has to take a day off because she's not allowed back in school.
Bullshit. This is entirely bullshit.
We did the right thing and we're basically being penalized. DD1 has to miss a fun day of school with her friends and H has to miss work. Because my kid who feels otherwise fine is blowing her nose a few times too many.
It makes me feel like we need to now start sending our kids to school even when they're sick because otherwise they have to be tested and miss multiple days and one of us has to miss work. Either that or lie about her absences.
I'm so mad.
Thank goodness DD1 is being really mature about it. Her and H are planning to have a super special Halloween day together all day tomorrow. But I can't help but feel so upset. The whole situation is such crap.

I’m hoping a good takeaway from the Covid years will be mask wearing in crowded public places or if you have a sniffle. We were discussing masks after the kids get fully vaccinated. I think we will still encourage them in flu season and if Covid is in high or moderate transmission. I don’t necessarily want my kids to think masks need to go away since there have been positive outcomes as a result of using masks. I’ve had sniffles all week and have worn my mask all week in my cubicle because I don’t want to give my coworkers this cold.

cnf It is so tough with keeping kids out just in case, then getting them back in to school. My kiddo had a runny nose, so kept him home. School needs a doctor's note if out for 2 days or more. I just decided to take him to be tested. I think I will ask the secretary tomorrow what others have been doing, because I felt clueless suddenly with how do you get a note for a runny nose during a pandemic.

cnf you have my sympathies, we were in a similar boat a few weeks ago with the twins. Tests are hard to come by here, let alone getting fast results. They ended up being out a week between preschool wanting “symtoms gone” negative test and doctor note. In another time they would have both been in school probably 🤷🏻♀️

Runny nose is like her only symptom, she feels totally fine otherwise. But apparently that's enough to warrant a covid test in our district. Such bullshit.

We had weeks of no cases in our school district and then Bam this week 4 schools had cases. Ours had 6, which is a lot for us. None close contacts with my kid. But ugh. Hope everyone is ok.

jaygee Did your district have Fall break recently? We have seen a spike in cases and I assume it’s related to travel or activities over break.

cnf That sucks. I still can't get over what a mess this whole testing thing seems to be in the States. Like kids should not be missing multiple days waiting on test results. Especially when they're not sick. The kids here do rapid self tests twice a weekat school and we still send them with sniffles/colds. Everyone does and it's allowed. Only with a fever and/or more COVID symptoms would we keep them home and do a PCR. Our numbers are low enough that it really is almost always just a cold or HFM or strep or whatever else. If I feel like they wouldn't be lying in bed at home sick, then they go to school.

Our school district is introducing surveillance testing but the parents (including me) have some questions no one can answer. Ex. They’re proposing pool testing in order to maximize tests. If a pool tests positive everyone in the pool quarantines for ten days or they can do a PCR. Testing is so hard to come by in my particular area that parents aren’t really excited at the thought of a trying to find tests to get their kids out of quarantine

No. But I do think there has just been a general relaxing. We are 94% vaccinated in the 12+ population and have low community spread. The first three weeks of school there were cases and everyone was on edge. Then we had a good long streak with nothing. So birthday parties have been happening (we’ve only been invited to outdoor ones) and general guards have been lowered. So it’s likely from outside of school activities. We reminded DS about masks and all that jazz. We’re so close to vaccines.

I near hair pets.
PDQ
I just came back from a week long work meeting. The second I landed and turned on my phone, I got the text that someone I had spent the evening before having drinks with outside tested positive. I haven't done anything since March 2020. I order groceries and food. I didn't travel. I work from home. My first time out and I was exposed.

I also want to point out I am not mad at the specific person that exposed me. She is vaccinated and boosted. (which OMG)

I'm sorry Wtfshouldmynamebe. Her vaccination status means she's less likely to pass it on, if that helps at all. Fx you stay well.

Wtfshouldmynamebe Ugh that sucks. I hope you're negative. And how frustrating for your friend who was vaxxed AND boosted. Fucking Delta and the anti vaxxers keeping us in this mess.

Wtfshouldmynamebe I'm sorry. I get being mad. The one time I was exposed, I was furious. Not at the person, but at the fact that it even happened. Fingers crossed you stay Covid-free.

Thanks everyone. I'm just extra cranky because today is DS's birthday so I can't see him. I know technically I don't have to quarantine, but he is high risk.

Who likes getting a shot? No one. Not me. Not my 5yo. But we've been talking about what's going to happen (He's going to get superpowers, duh.) and why it's important, and we're going to go out for donuts afterward.

Also, I give my 22 month old shots three times a week. We do things we don't like all the time to keep them healthy.

Oh Wtfshouldmynamebe I’m so sorry. I’m glad you are able to quarantine away from your fam but I am so sorry that you were exposed. I really hope you test negative and then can have a birthday redo celebration with your DS. 💜

Hello, I’m back on the perpetual “can’t go back to school without a negative test, doctors note, and/or no symptoms” track. We are like 2 weeks out from our last song and dance with this.
It’s a twin. Other twin gets to stay. Try explaining to a very devastated newly 4 yr old why brother gets to stay and enjoy the Halloween party while you had to come home Because your nose started running.
My husband goes “and just think…. When 5-11 can get vaccinated… they still can’t get vaccinated” yup cheers lol
