This is amazing news The drug maker Merck said on Friday that it would seek authorization for the first antiviral pill for Covid after its drug, known as molnupiravir, was shown in a clinical trial to cut the risk of hospitalization or death in half when given to high-risk people early in their infections. The treatment could become the first in a wave of antiviral pill products, which experts say could offer a powerful new tool in efforts to tame the pandemic, as they could reach more people than the antibody treatments that are being widely used in the United States for similar patients. “I think it will translate into many thousands of lives being saved worldwide, where there’s less access to monoclonal antibodies, and in this country, too,” said Dr. Robert Shafer, an infectious disease specialist and expert on antiviral therapy at Stanford University. www.nytimes.com/2021/10/01/us/merck-antiviral-pill-covid.html

I heard about it this morning and breathed a massive sigh of relief. Between this and vaccinations for littles coming I feel like the end is in sight.

The advancements in science due to Covid continue to be an amazing silver lining.
It's still a shit sandwich, though.

They really need to brand it as like ivermectin ++ so people don't fight it.

Jeff Zeints just said they've facilitated an estimated doubling of rapid test production and are working with retailers to bring costs down

This is interesting as Offit (the author) was sort of loosely aligned on the vaccine advisory committee with Meisser, the batshit guy on the committee who wanted more kids in trials, longer trials, didn’t want an EUA for kids, and thought covid was going away back in June. Hopefully this means the committee as a whole will disregard anything Meissner has to say if they meet in October. (Yes, I read the meeting transcripts.)

Meissner also wrote a WSJ opinion that masks on children were “abusive” and there aren’t really studies that show they do anything.
So if the committee can limit his influence on the kids vaccine process, that would be great.

I don’t trust white men over the age of 65 to not have gone of the deep-end. Giuliani, Dershowitz, Flynn - all these old men who spend their lives in positions of power never being questioned seem highly susceptible for believing stupid shit.

Also if you all had told me in January 2020 that I would follow the internal dynamics of vaccine advisory committees and Formula 1 racing teams, I would’ve laughed at you.

It’s been exactly a year since 45 had COVID. How has it been a year already? What is time?

klw, I hope they're able to verify that about lower transmission rates. I'm so tired of people saying if it makes no difference between vaccinated and not-vaccinated by choice vis a vis transmission to others, why get vaccinated if you're willing to take the chance of getting seriously ill yourself?

greykitty , and I hope they come out with that info soon. And I mean even if they do, anti vaxers will find some other argument. But I would love to have some extra peace of mind that the risk of me transmitting it to my family from work is lower.

So this is cool, my DD's school sent out a survey asking parents if they plan to get their 5-11 year olds vaccinated, how soon, and where they feel most comfortable getting the vaccine (e.g. community clinics vs Dr office vs pharmacy). They even asked if we would be open to our child being vaccinated during the school day without a parent present.
I'm really glad to see them planning ahead for vaccinating students because, boy howdy, there's plenty else that they just had no GD plan for at all.

I'm salty bc my kid failed a geography test because he was in school required quarantine and wasn't taught the material and nobody had any sort of plan for communicating with us what he should be doing during 10 days at home. (*no I do not expect the teachers to be juggling in-person and at home kids. It was inevitable that cases would occur and there was no plan in place from district leadership).

dc2london Yes, I saw the RBG memes that I posted on SM pop up in my memories a few weeks ago. So crazy. How this year go so fast? And yet it feels like pre COVID was a lifetime ago. 😭

COVID booster done. Now to wait and see if I get any side effects. I’m hopeful they kick in 12 hours later if they do, like last time. It would be while I’m sleeping which is preferable.

klw agreed. Even for my retail 🎯 working H and keeping him from passing it to the kids. Just hoping that if I were to need to isolate a kid, knowing I can caretake without passing it through the whole crew. This would be huge and my family isn’t even managing people with medical issues. Now I’m rambling.

I would expect teachers to come up with makeup work for a kid out sick for a week or two. so quarantine should be about the same, shouldn't it?
