Well, I just paid my first childcare bill in 18 months. It was quite the run. Meanwhile I just paid my last daycare bill for my oldest last week. Too bad the budget windfall is only temporary until we put the twins in full time daycare in January which will be more $$ than our nanny. ::sobs:: I legit don’t know what we’ll do when the twins go to K and we are done paying childcare. That is thousands back into the budget each month. So insane.

For us, it's just morning and after-care for 3 days a week for both kids so it's not nearly the $$$ that it used to be. We're not doing any before or after care two days a week since I'm working from home and can swing pick-up/drop-off not interfering with meetings those days.

Our district just yesterday sent us a link to our dashboard. I guess it took them awhile to get it running. I’m going to cool my jets and give them some time to update it before I email. My anxiety over this is really insane right now and I’m going to try to manage it without involving too many others. Join us! Reorganize every cabinet on your house to protect your brain from the overwhelming anxiety of sending your children into environments where you can't control their safety! We're all fine!

Yes, my H is WFH permanently so now the kids can do the bus which is so nice especially since I have 4 more years of double daycare costs.

I feel like we should invite Michelle Goldberg here. She's the only one who cares about the details of under 12 vaccines. Come to us Michelle and be angry with us. "That’s why we need the Food and Drug Administration to move quickly. “I can tell you almost certainly there will be data available in September to present to Pfizer,” Dr. Yvonne Maldonado, a Stanford professor of pediatric infectious diseases and a lead investigator at the Stanford site of Pfizer-BioNTech’s pediatric vaccine trial, told me. She thinks Pfizer will be able to file for emergency use authorization in October. So why is Collins saying the end of the year? It’s unclear. One question, which even well-connected people are having a hard time getting an answer to, is whether the F.D.A. is going to demand extra data for the kids’ vaccine. In July, the agency asked Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna to double the number of kids in their clinical trials to have a better chance of detecting rare side effects. The F.D.A. also said it wanted four to six months of follow-up safety data, as opposed to two for adults. Most experts don’t think this data is necessary for the F.D.A. to authorize the vaccine on an emergency basis. But we don’t know if the F.D.A. will insist on waiting for it. “That is probably one of the decision points that is affecting the various predictions,” said Dr. Lee Savio Beers, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics." Link to story.

I think I will just start doing the binax rapid for my kid twice per week on the off weeks from the PCR testing at school. It’s going to cost me $50 per month plus more if H and I also want to use them. But my brain will appreciate the piece of mind I guess. I have been through 3 boxes of binax tests since my oldest started band 5 weeks ago. We are not using them as instructed by following up 3 days later; we are using them as 2 tests per box. My allergies have been so obnoxious and both my older girls get anxiety-induced upset stomachs. You basically can't get a same day test (or test result!) here. So...bye bye monies? I am more than a little annoyed that I'm spending so much when clearly no one else in TX seems to be worried. We have allergies so I feel you. My kid is congested and there’s no way I can send him to school tomorrow even though a freaking storm just blew by and everyone is feeling it. He’s going to miss a playdate for his BFFs birthday and they’re both going to be so sad. 😭

I saw a tweet that said that 1/2 the band tested positive for COVID, but the real tragedy was that they all tested positive for being in Kid Rock's band.

Can I ask what kind of testing they do 2x per week - is it pcr or rapid? How fast do you get results back? I’m really all in on the lack of testing is a big gap here in the US and need concrete things to fight for. Also, I took a surveillance pcr test last Thursday afternoon and didn’t get my results back until last night, Sunday. I mean, how useless is that? If I had been positive I would have had to notify a number of people of exposure because I didn’t sit home and wait for my results since I had no symptoms or exposure. Students do fast self antigen tests, and have the results in 15 min. If they get a positive they leave school and confirm it with a PCR test (results take no longer than a day). Well that sounds lovely. I'm jealous of the availability and fast turn around.

Well that sounds lovely. I'm jealous of the availability and fast turn around. Honestly I think the U.S. really pushing the vaccines and vaccine production was for sure the right choice originally. I don't think it was clear that so many would voluntarily not take the vaccine. But now that that's the case I don't understand why the U.S. government isn't pushing on increasing test centers and reducing the price. We don't pay for any of this testing. I get boxes of self tests every month for my preschooler (where testing is optional) given to me for free, and my school aged students do the testing at school and again for free. Testing centers are everywhere, we walk three minutes to get to the nearest one, and insurance covers PCR tests as long as they're not done for travel I think. But when we paid privately for PCR tests to travel it was 30 Euros. Way less Germans would be testing so often if they had to pay for it, it was hard to get to, or if took forever to get results. Also masks should cost much, much less, Americans are being totally screwed over by the companies selling masks there. We pay about 1 euro for surgical or KN95 masks.

DD2 is now sick too. DD1's rapid came back negative but now I am trying to find a PCR test near me.

richard did I dream Katie Porter was going to have a congressional hearing about the vaccine timeline for kids? I know she and a bunch of other Congress people wrote a letter but a hearing would be lovely as long as people ask legit questions and don't ramble the whole time.

athn64 , I'm sorry FX you can get her tested today. Her school has rapid testing available, though they are still getting their PCR tests set up. I've got an appointment at a CVS this afternoon for PCR testing in addition to the rapid this morning.

ICU’s are over 100% capacity in my region. Yet they still won’t put a mask mandate on.
The county I live in has been a dumpster fire from the start but the one my H works in and that we do business in was good early in the pandemic. They had relatively low numbers and put precautions in place. Now the cases are out of control and no sign of it improving. I don’t understand the logic of restricting businesses last year to avoid overrunning the hospitals yet we’re at this point now and they won’t even have a fucking mask mandate.
I’m so angry and feel so helpless. And I’m really scared that we will have a medical emergency and not be able to get help.
