byjove that graphic does make me feel better because my K kid will be starting next week but they have a mask mandate for everyone and they also will be doing testing I believe.

This is somewhat reassuring for me bc our state in Germany just announced its plan will be universal masking and then our school has mandatory tests 2x /week. 107 days should get us to vaccination (our kids are all between 5-10). 22% is obviously still high, but it's not as hopeless as I had feared, I guess... I had been thinking masking alone might get us closer to that 25% range, naïve me. Testing for kids is not really a thing here- though parents are trying. Underscores how important it is to make it part of the mitigation plan.

So I’m getting to see how a positive is handled in our school and so far so good.
All the kids in the class with the positive had to take a rapid binax test before school on Thursday and again today. It was administered at school and they just had to go early.
So far no other students have tested positive that were in the class with the student that got an asymptomatic positive on a pcr test. Also, interesting to note that no one else in the family of the positive student has tested positive (vaxed mom and dad and two unvaccinated siblings). Fingers crossed.

Can I ask what kind of testing they do 2x per week - is it pcr or rapid? How fast do you get results back? I’m really all in on the lack of testing is a big gap here in the US and need concrete things to fight for. Also, I took a surveillance pcr test last Thursday afternoon and didn’t get my results back until last night, Sunday. I mean, how useless is that? If I had been positive I would have had to notify a number of people of exposure because I didn’t sit home and wait for my results since I had no symptoms or exposure.

That is…..not reassuring for me. I don’t believe our district is doing regular testing, so only masks required and that is a lot of infections by 3 months in. 😭

Our school district covid tracker updates on Monday afternoons. I know one 2nd grade class in the city had to quarantine due to a positive test and there were several other singular (?) cases in different schools. Anxiously refreshing that page.

Students do fast self antigen tests, and have the results in 15 min. If they get a positive they leave school and confirm it with a PCR test (results take no longer than a day).

Enro masks just restocked Were you able to get any? Yes, I finally got some! I screwed myself over on shipping though, lol. I panic bought 2 for the kids when they first came up and then saw there were still some available so I got a youth in case the kids is too small for my oldest and medium for me to try. If I would have ordered all together I would have gotten free shipping and instead I paid double 🤦🏻♀️ But I didn't know if it would be crazy like the happy masks restocks had been. I'm a little worried the M will be too small for me because I have a fat face but I measured and that had me between a S and M 🤷🏻♀️

Yeah. I read that article yesterday (I think @epiellie linked to it on Twitter) and felt my heart jump right into my throat. It’s an awful best case scenario. I really, really hope they pass an EUA for the 5-11 crowd sooner rather than later.

The lack of consistently fast, affordable and regularly-available testing in this country is stupid.

The lack of consistently fast, affordable and regularly-available testing in this country is stupid. Yep. Our numbers are "down" but only because there is a test shortage. Our positivity rate is still too damn high.

Rapid self-tests that are 98% accurate with results in 15 minutes. I helped teach a 1st grade class how to do them and supervised for a few weeks. They got the hang of it really fast, and after they tested themselves the other mom and I hung out in the back of the room for 15 min, read the results, and left. ETA: antigen tests, sorry, not PCR tests. But if the rapid antigen is positive, they have to follow up with a PCR and those results are usually back in 24 hrs.

I think I will just start doing the binax rapid for my kid twice per week on the off weeks from the PCR testing at school.
It’s going to cost me $50 per month plus more if H and I also want to use them. But my brain will appreciate the piece of mind I guess.

So when I go to Walgreens site it says "schedule free drive-thru test". I know the rapid tests are being paid for by the state here so maybe it's regional or are they free in other areas too?

In my area CVS does PCR testing but I haven’t seen an available appointment in 3 weeks. Those would be either covered by insurance or, if uninsured, free. The binax now rapid antigen tests are for purchase for $24 per box, which is two tests but intended to be for one person (per the directions you do the first one and then the second one 36 hours later). I think the Ellume test is just one per box and it’s $30. Eta: sorry, Walgreens is the same story in test availability Basically in my area, the PCR test appointments are hard to come by. And the ones available have long turn around times. There is one drop in location that is open until 7 pm so I’ll take DS there tonight.

Yeah getting an appt at walgreens or cvs for a test is hard here too. We have one bigger drive thru place but their appts are also filled kinda fast most days. If you do binax Amazon hasnt been having them. And most stores will say they are in or out of stock but the info isnt always correct. To avoid running around Cvs or walmart usually does have stock if shipped. To save on cvs shipping, get the care plus for $5/mo or $48 per year. Then they give you a $10 coupon each month you can use. Discount on cvs brand stuff. Shipping is 2 days and free. So if you pay $5 per month for cvs you get $10 back per month. Or if you look at year, pay $48 and get $120 back($10 a month) I know theres walmart plus too, but ive been trying to avoid amazon and walmart both

It looks like CVS around here is the same and anything other than rapid antigen tests at Walgreens aren't available, but the rapid tests are mostly readily available for now. I hope they ramp up testing availability again as demand is unfortunately rising again. Gah.

We're still waiting to hear on our testing plan for my kids' district. The state is making individual and pooled PCR tests and rapid tests to schools, but we also have pretty easy access to PCR tests and have a stockpile of Binax tests at home if we don't feel like the district options are enough. DH's school has rapid tests but we're going to have him go do a PCR test on his own every-other week too. He's vaccinated but I'm going to guess many in his student population are not.

I'm so jealous of the positive in the classroom protocol you have jaygee. I just tried checking the website and I can't find any reference to what happens if is a positive in the classes. Apparently I have to dig deeper which seems ridiculous. I know if a student is exposed to a positive (like in their household), they are allowed to return to school. If they don't want to test, they can just wear a mask.
