My favorite thing about weekly testing is people screaming about how there are carcinogens in the swab and they will all end up with cancer. It leaves me speechless everytime a parent at school brings it up. On one of the local FB groups moms were saying they don’t want their kids to get the “brain swabs” because we should be against “brain damaging poking” and I had to close the app and look out the window for awhile because these people apparently think that when someone gets covid tested their brains are being literally being sampled to check for covid.

Every time I've had a brain swab I definitely have a burnt toast smell in my nasal passages for a bit afterward but "the test is giving you cancer" is a real leap That is so interesting. I've never heard anyone say they had a specific smell afterwards. The swabs are sterilized with a chemical that could cause cancer but it doesn't actually leave the swab so the patient isn't exposed. I've been swabbing patients for years so I dont really have a good tolerance for the bs fb science

Welp looks like I'm now heading up a PTA fundraiser for air purifiers for our elementary school classrooms, since our district so far hasn't seemed to want to buy them themselves (and I found out another PTA in our district ran a similar fundraiser last year). Wish us luck! I'm sorry. Congress gave schools a boatload of money for stuff like this in CARES and ARP but it really seems it wasn't always distributed/used as intended. I hope your fundraising is successful.

In our case our district already had a budget deficit the last few years so some of the money went to patching holes in the budget/maintaining programs/doing put off building improvements, some went to additional aides to combat “learning loss” and extra counselors/nurses. But I know they haven’t used all the money. They made a big deal in BOE meetings about how they have several years to use it so shouldn’t have any budget issues the next few years. To a certain extent I understand their perspective given our budget issues but as you said the money was given for specific things - it isn’t a slush fund. Heck, we still only have MERV-8 filters in our HVAC because our system is “too old” to accept anything higher - but no talk of fixing that. I’m also going to keep fighting the good fight to try to get the district to pay for the filters while we continue the fundraiser.

Kid Rock is such an asshole. He’s not as stupid as he looks though. He fooled so many people into buying into his redneck image when he’s actually from a wealthy family. He makes me crazy.

They are already starting to audit schools on the CARES funds to verify that they were used appropriately. Although updating current filters may fall within the appropriate guidelines. "it's natural that some people disagree" I'm guessing there's lots of stuff like this happening with all that money.

Kid Rock is bragging that he’s vaccinated along with most of his band? I’m sure that wasn’t something he mentioned at Sturgis.

My treadmill broke last week (with me on it!) So we ordered a new one and in the meantime I have to run outside. In Virginia. In August. I just got notice that the new treadmill isn't coming for almost 3 weeks 🥵 Really wish I could just go get a monthly pass to the rec center gym. Thanks delta!! ::stocks up on Liquid IV:: I ran after work a couple of weeks ago and never again. I got home, chugged a Liquid IV, took a cool shower, and still felt like death the rest of the night lol. I miss my morning runs but there’s no time now 😫

athn64, FX! On the walk to school this morning, I saw a dad do a panicked forehead temp check and pulled his kid to the side out of the line. I'm guessing the kid said he didn't feel well and the dad was trying to figure out if he was trying to get out of school or not. You can't really tell them to tough it out if there is doubt nowadays.

Oh for sure! And we have to keep DD2 home too out of safety. She's absolutely fine and bouncing off the walls. I miss the days when only the sick one had to be home.

I hope your DD1 tests negative and it is just a cold and that your DD2 stays healthy (and doesn’t drive you nuts in the process). ❤️

It sucks. A has started getting GI issues when he is anxious/unsettled and of course starting school full time after 18 months makes him anxious. So we are constantly monitoring him to see if he has any other symptoms. I feel like we call the pediatrician every other week or so because he has an upset stomach plus another minor symptom. Thankfully, they do both rapids and quick turn around PCR, so he’s only missed one day of camp and no school for monitoring so far. But I know it’s going to happen soon.

Just got a reply to my email to the superintendent last week trying to convince them to buy HEPA air purifiers for district classrooms (I found some that are only $270 each on Amazon...seriously, how much money did we get in COVID relief?). TLDR: nope >.<
Guess we will keep up with the fundraiser. Grrr.

This is somewhat reassuring for me bc our state in Germany just announced its plan will be universal masking and then our school has mandatory tests 2x /week. 107 days should get us to vaccination (our kids are all between 5-10). 22% is obviously still high, but it's not as hopeless as I had feared, I guess...
