How do trails fit into the outdoor mask guidance? I am curious how National and state parks handle the masks. We always lifted them if passing but it seems like that is not necessary if vaccinated? I think you’re good without a mask if you’re vaccinated out on the trails. It would be analogous to a small outdoor gathering with vaccinated and unvaccinated people. And with less risk, since interaction with other people is usually in passing. I expect that the NPS will adjust to follow CDC guidelines. We’re going to a NP in a couple weeks, so this stuff has been on my mind.

101 temp, uncontrollable whole body shakes and chills, teeth chattering. I knew it was going to be bad, but just regular side effects at least :/ This was H's reaction to J&J too. I hope it passes for you soon! 🤞

Today is our anniversary, and we are fully vaccinated, so we went out to dinner for the first time since pre-pandemic. We still wore masks except at our outdoor table, but were able to relax while we ate which was... really nice. (I know people have been eating out like this for months but we were never comfortable until now.) So yeah. That’s different.

Lifting the mask mandate outdoors is troubling to me because the people that only begrudgingly wore masks because they had to and because everyone else was are likely the people not getting vaccinated and there’s no way they will continue to wear masks if not everyone is. I know they want to send the message that there’s this part where you can resume some normalcy IF you get vaccinated but the people that didn’t care about the pandemic won’t care about that distinction and it’s not like you can enforce it based on who is or isn’t vaccinated. I know that risk of outdoor transmission is very low regardless but our state is lifting outdoor mask mandate for vaccinated folks AND ending all travel quarantine requirements and it feels like too much all at once and driven by politics and economy rather than public health.

I'm with you piratecat. I was just talking to DH last night about how they want to use the updated outdoor masking rules to encourage vaccinations, but many (not all) of the folks who aren't getting vaccinated simply don't care about masks, some are still covid deniers. I just don't think it's going to work in any meaningful capacity. I hope I am wrong.

greykitty I snorted at the part about walking through a store parking lot unmasked. Since this whole thing started, very rarely do I see others wear their masks in parking lots. Put them on/take them off at the door. Winter was about the only exception to that. ETA: I put my mask on in the car and it stays there until I get back to it. I plan on continuing to do that for awhile at least. I realize I'm being extra about it. Huh, interesting. I'd say like 98% of people where I am wear them in the parking lot. Masks are on and off at the car. I suspect that will change though, especially with the weather starting to warm up. Same here, even with warmer weather.

I agree with you. But I do also think that the CDC waited until a lot of people had been vaccinated to even make this recommendation, purposely.

I’m interested too. We are going to a National park this weekend, so I guess we will see. It’s not like we have to bring our vax card so I don’t know if they would want to risk lifting it for the trails since they are so narrow. I’ll probably keep mine on unless we are in isolated areas since I want to have the kids wear theirs.

I just wish our state didn’t simultaneously drop all travel restrictions just as tourist season is about to start, which I understand is why they’re doing it. Walking around outside in tourist towns was packed even with strict restrictions last season, and not nearly the same as outdoors where you can distance, but I don’t think people will care to make that distinction either. We have one of the highest vaccination rates but our cases aren’t exactly falling.

I have noticed with some amusement that our CDC director already has a mask tan line.

It’s not like we have to bring our vax card so I don’t know if they would want to risk lifting it I myself would base it on how crowded the trails are. A thousand people clustered looking at a water fall - ok, my mask will go on. Chatting with strangers for an hour within a foot of each other - mask. Otherwise, mask would stay in my pocket. Illinois is following the CDC - and we're a state where many were chafing about restrictions. I fully expect state and local forest preserves and parks with people enjoying sun on their faces when not in crowds. I do feel that this may be the other side of the see-saw we've all been through - the inverse of the anxiety of people being told to wear masks if they didn't feel comfortable with the science, and now the anxiety of giving the masks up in part, science or no science.

We were at a national park a couple of weeks ago and only a small percentage of people wore masks while passing people (my kid wore his the whole time while my H and I periodically pulled them down when no one was around for long stretches).

It was literally the second time in a year I was in a restaurant annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd it was like I was a toddler. I dropped food, I spilled my water. SO embarrassing.

I’m very excited to be able to walk the dog on my favorite trails without a mask, especially now that the weather is heating up. And yes to setting an example for my kids by wearing my mask anywhere that they need to wear theirs. I think the 8 year old would stage a revolt if he had to wear a mask while H and I didn’t. I just can’t wait until they are vaccinated!

byjove I hope you feel better soon. And I hope you have the most immunity against covid humanly possible for a really long time. This is my hope too, ha! Things definitely got worse towards midnight (103, puking my brains out, more shaking), but my fever broke for a few blissful hours. I have a killer headache and muscle aches with the fever back now, but I except tomorrow I’ll be back to normal. Thanks all ❤️❤️ cakewench was your headache like right behind your eyes?

So... for those not keeping track, I am participating in the CureVac (another mRNA vax) study and think I got the vaccine bc of my reaction. But of course I'm not sure because it is a double-blind study.
Anyway, as of Monday it's my turn to get vaccinated (next group is opening up and I'm in it), and I have already been offered a Pfizer vaccination on May 12 by my OBGYN. I talked to the doctor for the CureVac study when I went in for a blood draw today and asked him what he thought I should do (he also doesn't know whether I got the vaccination or placebo). He said definitely get vaccinated bc it could be a while until CureVac is approved and vaccinates the placebo group. I feel bad about it because my suspicion is that I was vaccinated in the study, and I don't want to take a vaccination away from someone else (supply is still low here), but I'm not sure I got vaccinated, and the dr recommended I get Pfizer now no matter whether I was in the vaccination or placebo group. So I'm going to do it.

And my great-uncle who got Covid from his care worker died yesterday. Because of Covid. No need for extra hug posts, likes are sufficient. I'm feeling ragey. Yes he was old, yes he had a weak heart, but he was doing fairly well and definitely could have made it until August and I might have gotten to see him again.
ETA because I've got to tell a story about the kind of man he was. His sister (my grandmother) married a divorced man in the 1940s. Their parents disowned her and cut her out of the will. When the parents died, this great-uncle gave her her part of the inheritance because he didn't think it was right to get everything while she got nothing.
