Feeling frustrated/dejected this morning. As I feared, NJ is opening gyms and indoor dining this week, one week before school opens. It just seems like SUCH a bad idea to just reopen all this stuff at the same time, and a fast way to get schools (which should be a priority) shut back down again. (ETA: Just saw movie theaters & performance venues can reopen too >.<) I keep seeing people on Facebook spreading info about how the CDC now says only 6% of COVID deaths were only from COVID, so that "proves that COVID isn't that bad." First of all, all that page is doing is showing other conditions listed as a cause of death in addition to COVID. Many of those (like respiratory and cardiac conditions), can be CAUSED by COVID. Some other ones aren't, but as someone with underlying health conditions, I find this rhetoric really offensive and hurtful, as if it wouldn't matter if I die because I have an underlying health condition (And how many Americans really have 0 underlying health conditions? And even if you aren't diagnosed with one, how do you know you don't have one?) ETA: I do suspect though given the current CDC situation that page was purposely designed to make things look "not so bad." And my favorite Facebook comment of the day "I don't know what NPR is but they don't seem like a valid news source." I truly fear for our country.

My entire district elementary grade list fits on one sheet of paper. I’m boycotting watercolors this year because every year we buy them and every year they come back pristine We were randomly asked for watercolors for my fifth grader this year. I was very, "..........." It would be weirder if she didn't attend a school focused on 'arts' but again they never used them. they use different mediums in art class depending on what they are learning but even in kinder they used temper paint in class.

I was thinking maybe they didn't want to set parents up for potentially unsupervised kids using actual paints at home, which I appreciate. It just seemed kinda out of left field when it's never been on a supply list pre k through 4

Someone in a FB group I'm in posted this. I did the math to double-check and yup "Every minute Trump’s been president more than 3 people have contracted a virus that could have been contained. Let that sink in."

His actual cause of death was organ failure caused by complications of polio. But he died of polio, bc the organ failure wouldn't have happened otherwise. I HATE the cause of death argument.

NPR is one of the few news sources I can listen to without that constant underlying skepticism of "Is this accurate? Or, how much of what I just heard is complete bullshit?"

geekygirly, I really wish that Murphy opened indoor dining August 1st. Wait two weeks. Then open gyms on August 15th. Schools on September 1st. He really dug himself into a hole--and now is just opening everything at once. And I feel for all the small business in NJ. I think in many places inside dining could have opened earlier. And he was going too! Then canceled it last minute in early July.

When Ames is literally the worst place on the whole stupid planet for cases per capita. It’s truly unbelievable. People just really don’t understand how awful Iowa is at this.

People in my district are pissed. If you chose the hybrid option, elementary school was supposed to start in person next Tuesday. But they will be doing a parent survey tomorrow for the board to decide on Friday if they will have the entire district continue virtual.
I would be super stressed if I chose the hybrid option and now plans are changing again a week before in person was to start.
My state is actually doing pretty well and most counties are in the green and ready to start opening up schools.

The Nazi adjacent imagery and the message of wanting a less controlling government are not in line with each other at all.

We are district mandated 6 week virtual TK-12, so at least there is some consistency.
TK-1st Chromebooks didn’t come until today (the first day of school...not blaming them, tech has been so hard to come by in bulk...so both kids have “choice boards” like activity bingo for this week and then we will meet with their teachers and collect tech and further instructions.
I’m technically just on email, since my job is closed this week, so I think we’re going to bust out the bingo before our first teacher meeting and then do “PE” at the beach for the afternoon.

At least IC is only the 4th worst per capita. 😬😭 I truly didn’t realize that any NCAA football was happening. Even outdoors at 40% capacity, no way I would go to a game right now. With screaming fans. I love how they threatened that after the OK game if social distancing wasn’t being adhered to they would stop ticket sales. Riiiiiight.

Pollard threatened that if they don’t sit where they are supposed to they wouldn’t allow fans in anymore. Once is too many times, you big dummy. They also have said no tailgating. Okie dokie, I’m sure that will work.

I imagine many are looking forward to a return especially after last week's press conference. I am still sad about our districts decision even though it's probably safer. I also wonder how much they are spending to get that feedback. How is kinder going for your child? My son's school seems 2 weeks behind his friends. Today was the first full day and we skipped it to try forest school.

The Nazi adjacent imagery and the message of wanting a less controlling government are not in line with each other at all. It's a super crazy mix of people. All very fringe. The right to protest is incredibly important here so in the end even though they don't have the right to harm others (not following the mask rules, not keeping distance) the courts have basically said they can't shut the protests down until they actually break the rules. It's hard though because images make it into the press that make it seem much more mainstream then it is. Only a very small percentage of Germans want less restrictions. The rest are happy with the current regulations (majority) or want more restrictions not less.
