Caution. This thread is scary AF. Only read it if you are up for it. This is me. I am pro vaccine and willing to get a covid vaccine, but yeah, not if it’s an October surprise. I hate that there is no trust anymore. I feel like such a hypocrite being skeptical toward the vaccine. But after seeing what this government has done with hydro.xy.chlorequine and even.desiv.ir and now plasma, SHIT I don't trust them at all. And I hate that. These are world class institutions.

I’ve been saying I’ll be first in line, but I’m scared if it gets politicized and I have doubts. Beyond knowing any possible side effects, I want to know the efficacy of the vaccine. It’s likely there will be more than one coming out within a few months of each other. It’s likely that certain vaccines may work best for people with certain medical conditions or who are in certain age groups. Plus, sometimes vaccines for the same disease are counter-indicated. I want the data to know that the vaccine I am getting is effective and appropriate for my demographic, ya know?

I saw a whole Twitter thread earlier where she didn’t even know how to read a graph and also had never seen a graph of Covid deaths. Which.....I’ve been following a graph of such since day 1 so WAT? She is highly unqualified and it makes me ragey.

Hell no.

CA came out hard yesterday and said - nope, we are not following those guidelines. Both at the Governors press conference and the Santa Clara County Health Officer (who is credited with the Bay Area’s quick shelter in place response) spoke out.
And also, we are finally getting some action on testing in CA. Gov announced yesterday a plan to double testing. This has been what I’ve been screaming about for two months. We were doing all the testing and then it just dropped off. My county of 800k is testing like 300 people a day if the reporting is correct. I mean, WTAF? That’s no way to detect spread and outbreaks. So hopefully we can get some movement there.

I'm anxious to hear what our state CDC says about it in their press conference tomorrow, as they have been very outspoken about expanding testing and such. They do also defer to CDC guidelines and is generally very diplomatic but it will be interesting to see how they reconcile the fact that Dr. Fauci was not involved in these decisions nor does he agree with them.

What is their end game? How do they see this panning out in their favor? Less testing = less confirmed cases so that makes them look better? It is inevitably going to spread more than it already is and kill even more people. But then just lie about the deaths? I guess none of it matters since their base won't care about reality and truth no matter what. I can't believe this is where we are 6 months later.

The surge of cases in Korea is worrisome and frustrating.
On the bright side, the government is creating a bunch of jobs as part of their economic recovery plan and my dad has a new 3-month gig specifically for seniors. He says it's easy work and pays well and they are constantly sending him home because it's hot or rainy or whatever.

I don’t get it (other than 45 trying to look like it’s improving)

Iowa had 1475 new cases in the last 24 hours (the highest daily number to date) and 18 more deaths. Our hospitalization is close the highest it has been.
I am never going to get to hug my parents again at this rate. Schools just started back this week...I can't even imagine what the numbers will be like for the next few weeks.
Fuck everything 2020.

Reynolds just held a press conference to update on the situation. Almost all of the uncontrolled spread is occurring in 3 counties...the ones with major universities that opened in the last week. Oh, no fucking kidding, lady? She has closed bars, taverns, breweries, and nightclubs in 6 counties. Restaurants can serve alcohol but only until 10pm. Gatherings over 10 people must ensure social distancing and I think she limited gatherings to 25 people. She "strongly encouraged" wearing face masks. When asked why she won't just issue a mask mandate she said because it can't be enforced and she trusts people to do the right thing. Yep, that's been working really well so far, obviously. She was also asked about the towns/cities that have issued mask mandates and said basically that they are only strongly enforcing them there because those mayors can't override her declaration that doesn't have a mandate. Such bullshit.

I really worry that clean up from the derecho is going to spike numbers. Community cleanup means that people who were distancing from others didn’t as they were helping one another. It’s a shitty situation on top of a shitty disaster.

I’m shocked she actually closed bars, etc. it’s a logical step (I can’t even imagine being a college student in IC and not going to the bars...I would have probably been one of those dumb students). It’s just surprising that after balking at all these other states for doing similar measures, now Iowa is taking a step.

Cuomo just set college and university guidelines. A little late, but I'm glad he put something in place. They have to transition to full remote if they hit 5% of their total on campus population for a minimum of two weeks. Population includes students, faculty, and staff.

It's not good at all.

ldubhawksfan, I would have 100% been one of those dumb kids. No doubt whatsoever. And now I am all curmudgeony and cursing them. It's a logical step but also seems a little bit too little, too late. But that's the name of the game around here.

Such bullshit. She is so fucking worthless. People are not doing the right thing. When the mayor of Des Moines decided to mandate masks all I saw was people saying "they can't enforce that so I'm not doing it!" Everyone who is willing to wear a mask is doing it. The people who aren't wearing them don't care about doing the right thing. They clearly don't give a shit.
