1st. I was thinking of doing the good and the beautiful but it's not common core If you’re going to transition back into public school, I would go with something like Kumon or even Evan Moor. A word of caution with TG&TB- if you’re not familiar with it, it’s very religious. Bible verses are worked into basically everything as well as moral lessons. My family is religious and I felt it was too heavy when I looked at it.

We are looking for something with a lot of hands on games and manipulatives.

Maybe some of that is omit-able as we work with her on various things? It’s just extra for us but I’m not interested in super religious.

DS1’s anxiety makes him prone to guilt and I thought some of the moral lessons would have been too heavy for him. I don’t think it’s *bad* per se, and I appreciate that it’s high quality and truly is beautiful, but I know mine tend to heavily internalize good v evil stuff quite a bit. I’m not familiar enough with it to know how easy to would be to omit that stuff because I stopped looking when I knew it wasn’t for us, but free is free and if you can work with it, I think that’s great!

Does anyone have a good common core math curriculum they recommend? We used Singapore Math for Kindergarten and are currently using their 1st grade curriculum. I’ve been really pleased with it. They have multiple versions of their curriculum, some of which align with common core standards. I use the Primary Mathematics version because it has a home instructor guide, which I wanted so that I can make sure I’m explaining things well and it’s tailored to a single student instead of a classroom. Their website lists which ones are common core though.

I thought of you guys after another poster and I tried to light-heartedly point out some of her words that may come across as rudeness. And she lost her damn shit.
I’m glad she could experience it in full. Bc me? I’m not so eloquent as you fine ladies. I just giffed her that she was being rude and intentionally obtuse.

I placed a hold on The Brave Learner with my library and I'm #44 in the queue. Worth buying to read now or wait?

Well I was not expecting that thread to show up again outside of the CD Board. I feel like I decided to run an errand with no makeup and a baseball cap and I just ran into someone I like. Lol.

Let the record state I’m also here for the homeschooling. I have a son going into third grade. I work outside the home and my H WFH. We’re going to try the online version of public school, but if it’s not vastly improved from our spring experience, we’ll transition to homeschooling. Our state only requires a 5 day notice. Our biggest challenge will be finding the time to devote to schooling while we both work.

Number and age of kids: 4 school-aged kids: 15, 13, 10, and 5
Grade level(s): 10th, 8th, 5th, and Kinder
Homeschool or virtual: Homeschool (different programs and platforms) + the distance model used by dd1’s independent study school
New to homeschool or OG: OG
Do you SAH or Work?: SAH
Biggest concerns: None at the moment. It’s business as usual for us. We’ll continue with the changes we made toward the end of last year for dd2. We’re sticking to the same platforms/programs we’ve been using for our 5th grader and Kinder.
Most looking forward to: Just continuing to do what works for each kid.
Have you started lesson planning?: That’s not really part of the equation. There’s a built in curriculum for dd2’s program that we stick to, but it is very much independent study focused. Her math and science are online platforms. She completes lessons and progresses forward. The HST (through a charter) keeps track of her progress.
Resources/recommendations/tips: We try to be flexible and find the style that works for each kid. We really focus on play-based and child-led learning model and literature-based is our gold standard for upper grades. Our older two thrive with this model. I love it. It’s also my preferred learning style. Dd2 likes Outschool and both girls use Masterclass. They used IXL in the past and liked it and dd1 briefly use Khan Academy for biology last year, but found that it wasn’t comprehensive enough. Her school switched to Apex Learning for math and science courses.
How are you feeling?: Pretty good. I’ve been focused on dd1’s fall learning plan. At her school, each student is assigned an advisor and students create a learning plan several times throughout the school year. So she’s been emailing both her counselor and advisor on her plans for the upcoming semester as she’s already has pretty set on what she wants to do. We were just discussing her learning plan this morning. She’ll start her third semester as a dual enrollment study a week after school starts. She just finished summer community college courses.

I made an account so I can post in the homeschool threads. I really think I will need to talk to other people who are doing this for the first time.
DS is 10 and going into 5th grade. He is on the Autism spectrum, and we decided that having a routine and sticking with it is the most important factor in him having a successful school year. That means not starting in-person school and then being sent home. Our district has not given any idea what virtual learning will look like, and I got tired of waiting, so we will homeschool.
I work full-time and so does DH. He will be coming to work with me 3-4 days a week, as he has been doing since April at this point, and will do "school" there. I have an unusual work situation and work in a building with only 4 other people, all of whom are supportive of him being there. I am very aware of how privileged I am to be able to do this and still work full time.
We are using Time4Learning. It was recommended by a couple of acquaintances, and there was a 2 week free trial, so I was able to play with it, look at the different assignments and how it is set up and really decide if I like it before committing. It is cheap, which is nice of course, but it seems to have the 4 core subjects covered well enough that if he completes the work for 5th grade he will be in good shape going back to school next year.
We are starting on Monday. He has been doing some workbook stuff over the summer, but I figure he has been out of school since March, we may as well get started. I am not exactly excited, but I am ready to get going.

Number and age of kids: Two kids, 8 and 4 Grade level(s): 3rd, pre-K Homeschool or virtual: virtual 3rd, on my own pre-k will pull my big kid to homeschool if e-learning sucks again New to homeschool or OG: new Do you SAH or Work?: SAH Biggest concerns: how awful this went last spring and how tablet addicted they are right now. Most looking forward to: Walks in the woods, sleeping in, my baby learning more about reading (he’s close and super interested, even more so than his sister was) and science stuff which both kids love. Have you started lesson planning?: not really but my sister, OG homeschooler is sending me stuff Resources/recommendations/tips: yes, please! I got nothing. How are you feeling?: sick to my stomach, slightly excited.

Our district announces the plan for school tomorrow and I cannot wait to hear it. I hope they really make it clear how the online school is going to work and don’t keep doing the vague “it’ll be better than before” stuff. I want to know how much parent involvement will be required and how much in real time screen time there will be per day. I keep hearing about other districts doing 6 in real time hours on the computer and i don’t love the idea of that at all for a third grader. Although I don’t think we’d go with it, I’d take in-person school into consideration if they have a great social distancing plan. I NEED TO KNOW.

Oh Lord. I just went on the school’s website and tomorrow is just the superintendent’s presentation of the final plan to the school board. So who knows if it will get finalized. Plus I have to watch a school board meeting 😭
