Yesterday I got to see my friends’ virtual school schedule and it was so much better than what was happening (here at least) in the spring. It was less parent-intensive and better laid out throughout the day. I’m hoping that’s what more of the virtual schoolers start seeing. I feel like it’s a really strong option, especially for the WFH parents.

I am not suggesting everyone is looking at the plan and saying "oh whew, great."

@pipandme I don't want to stir the pot, but it's been noticed.
Both working parents and SAH parents are "full time parents."
That hurt people's feelings. Wording matters, especially with such tender topics.

Number and age of kids: One, he'll be 6 on Sunday
Grade level(s): Going into 1st
Homeschool or virtual: Our school district is doing remote only to start the year; two options, remote with his school, where there are days you have to attend group classes and other days you have to submit assignments, or a 100% virtual academy through a website that is self-paced with attendance requirements and a minimum time commitment of two quarters; we chose the remote with his school
New to homeschool or OG: New other than the past few months
Do you SAH or Work?: I'm WFH right now, normally work FT outside the home
Biggest concerns: With working FT, my mom (most people here know she lives with me) will be taking on the education piece because my job won't be THAT flexible with being away to do his lessons. She and my son got really frustrated with each other the past few months, so it's going to be a challenge. He's also not doing well without a social component and I feel it will only get worse.
Most looking forward to: Right now? Nothing. I'm stressed.
Have you started lesson planning?: Thankfully that part will be done by the school.
Resources/recommendations/tips: Having a Chromebook for him has been pretty awesome, he's getting so good at navigating a computer. The school chose some pretty good websites, iReady, Zearn, etc., I think they're good quality.
How are you feeling?: Normal OCD anxiety x a billion

For Kida and others doing preschool, prek or even k...investing in manipulatives is key. A play based curriculum is best practice. I taught prek for years and the difference between the old worksheet models and the new play based models is night and day Block counters, small sorting toys (multicolored with repetition) for patterns, puzzles, lacing beads, large tweezers, magnifying glasses, etc. allows exploration and hands on self guided learning and fine motor tuning. Magnadoodles are great too for practicing writing without so much paper waste. Kaplan was always my favorite website and most child care centers and schools use this brand but it is super pricey. However, visit their site for ideas on manipulatives and then try to find similar items on Amazon, Walmart. etc. Kaplans are made to last years in a commercial environment but cheaper alternatives are out there.

Also, I taught in PA and used these early learning standards. Basically a list of skills and examples on how to teach them. It's a great resource for understanding what they should be learning. You don't necessarily have to purchase curriculum...you can make your own from these standards. www.pakeys.org/pa-early-learning-initiatives/early-learning-standards/I would think each state would have something similar.

Number and ages of kids: 2 kids- 9 and 12 Grades: 4th and 7th/8th Plan: virtual through the district, although I’m prepared to fully homeschool if needed. DS is gifted and needs to be challenged. We’ve got our space set up. I’m taking the year to be with them and my nieces and nephews. I’m a licensed teacher and feel semi prepared for our change. It sounds like you and are the same levels and have the challenge

I agree with play-based, however, I disagree that an investment needs to be made on manipulatives. There are a lot of great home items that can be gathered without making a large purchase for this type of use. I'll link some examples, but I'm happy to help anyone to to find items in their home to use in place of other things. www.homepreschool101.com/math-manipulatives-around-your-home/www.fantasticfunandlearning.com/where-to-get-materials-for-home-preschool.html

I deleted my posts in the CD board for reasons that are no one's business but my own. The quoted posts were only a small portion of the whole conversations so y'all that want to harass/make fun of me for the parts that were quoted can __________ fill in the blank however you chose. I said I'm a full time parent because sah/work is a touchy topic for me. Full time parent seemed the neutral answer. Nah, we see you. Bye.
