So after much thought and many Ativan, we've come to the decision to homeschool DD this year. Now that the decision is made, I just want to embrace it and move forward. I know we have alot of ppl here doing the same so I thought we could start a little weekly check-in thread to commiserate, offer support, share lesson plans etc. I figured for now we'll lump everyone together but if we need to have separate threads later for virtual school and homeschool, we can. To start with, let's just see where we're all at 😆 Number and age of kids: Grade level(s): Homeschool or virtual: New to homeschool or OG: Do you SAH or Work?: Biggest concerns: Most looking forward to: Have you started lesson planning?: Resources/recommendations/tips: How are you feeling?: We also have a homeschool board, who knew? Check it out! howeverithappened.proboards.com/board/113/homeschooling

Number and age of kids:1dd, 4yr old
Grade level(s): Pre-K
Homeschool or virtual: Homeschool
New to homeschool or OG: New
Do you SAH or Work?: I work from home part time right now
Biggest concerns: being able to come up with lesson plans to help her learn consistently. She has some skills for k already so I plan on doing alot of k work with her as well. And then of course manage my whole life. I'm also worried about her missing out on the social aspect.
Most looking forward to: Doing science and social study activities
Have you started lesson planning?: Yes, I have mostly planned my full first week, I plan on starting her August 3rd.
Resources/recommendations/tips: I need some 😂
How are you feeling?: Anxious but determined

I just had to comment that you brought a LOL to my life. This is the last place I would think I would want to commiserate.
At least the stuff I read here about what is impossible and what someone who works can't do and what children can't do.
I am not faulting your optimism here. I am just saying my experience tends to find "this place" very negative.

I also do feel inclined to say virtual schooling is not homeschooling TO ME.
They are vastly different and the local homeschooling groups have been very vocal about that so I see their point.
Anyway, KOKO
I wish everyone well.

I'm hoping this thread will be helpful and supportive, not judgy and negative.

Number and age of kids: DS is seven, DD is two (but we have physical and speech therapies that we will also be working on)
Grade level(s): Second grade and preschool
Homeschool or virtual: We were going to do homeschool, but the school just offered virtual yesterday, so it’s still TBD
New to homeschool or OG: New
Do you SAH or Work?: Work. We will have to figure out a schedule, but between me, H, my mom, and MIL, we should be able to get a lot done in a day
Biggest concerns: Timing, making sure we do enough each day
Most looking forward to: being able to do things on our own schedule. If we feel comfortable traveling to visit family any time, we don’t have to worry about his schedule at school as much.
Have you started lesson planning?: Not really. Just trying to figure out what he wants to learn about and also knowing what he NEEDS to learn about.
Resources/recommendations/tips: I found the Oriental Trading Company actually has teaching resources, and they are divided by grade level, if anyone wants to have physical manipulatives available. Lots of experiments, cards, different things to build.
How are you feeling?: Ehhhh... ok. The idea of homeschooling sounds great, but we just need to make sure we keep the energy through the year. I am hoping virtual works out, because coming up with a curriculum is the most daunting thing here.

I've have a ton of workbooks and I'm building my lessons around those. I'm trying to keep a fun mix of worksheets and videos as well as apps, crafts, and play.
One YouTuber I've been watching suggested quizzing your child to see where their baseline is and I thought that was a great idea.
I've got quite a few ideas in the works, when I get home I will post some.

sewf, thanks for the tip about Oriental Trading Co.! I’ve been getting overwhelmed searching for materials, because nothing is organized by grade on the websites I’ve searched.

sewf , thanks for the tip about Oriental Trading Co.! I’ve been getting overwhelmed searching for materials, because nothing is organized by grade on the websites I’ve searched. Yeah, I got really excited about it! Some of the things are specifically packaged for teachers (like they come in packs that make 12 planet sets or whatever), but not everything is.

Are you doing virtual? I'd love your insight, suggestions with time management etc. Do you still use your planner alot? I know mine will be an integral part to keeping this going.

This is how I feel about homeschooling and this year in general. Number and age of kids: 3 kids (5, 12, 14) Grade level(s): K, 7th, 9th Homeschool or virtual: Homeschool K; virtual middle and high school New to homeschool or OG: new Do you SAH or Work?: I work; H is SAH Biggest concerns: I have the world's most stubborn 5 year old. I'm afraid we will make her hate learning and turn ourselves into alcoholics in the process. Most looking forward to: not exposing them to C-19? I am actually looking forward to being able to teach her history with an eye toward BIPOC instead of what is in most school lesson plans. Have you started lesson planning?: Yes. We bought a base curriculum for math & english (Blossom & Root). Going to freelance social studies and science. MH formerly ran art programming for Boys & Girls Club so he will be great at "specials." Resources/recommendations/tips: nope How are you feeling? See above. Thanks 2020

Number and age of kids: 2 kids, 6 and 7 Grade level(s): 2nd grade for both Homeschool or virtual: homeschopl New to homeschool or OG: new but it has been a topic of conversation pretty much ever since R was born Do you SAH or Work?: uhhh work? Kinda? Right now business is slow enough I can do everything on saturday if needed but I do some yards during the week in the evenings too. Biggest concerns: boredom. Getting them to not be too competitive. Keeping R on track. Most looking forward to: Being able to do our own thing and if we want to take a day to go do something we can. No more working doctor appointments around school. Have you started lesson planning?: Yes! I have the first month loosely planned out as far as goals but also willing to bend that if I discover we need to go slower or faster than I have planned. I do need to figure out my grammar stuff though. Resources/recommendations/tips: hawkward and @bynnyfungo helped me pick curriculum a lot. And I joined a homeschool fb group specific to my state which has been huge on figuring out things like NOI and what we will need to do at the end of the year as far as assessments and stuff. How are you feeling?: Excited! We're going to start on Monday to build some extra buffer into our year. H has 2 weeks of vacation left and we're hoping if things ease up a bit we might rent a house somewhere near water so we can go fishing and stuff like that

Also for those that have Pkers, may I suggest that you google tot school. I homeschooled DS for preschool and there were a lot of blogs and sites that had lesson plans and stuff already put together. You can keep what you like and not what you don't.
My focus at the time for pre-K/preschool was reading and math development. I didn't really do a lot in social studies and science. More so language development.
I also did writing with my DS as boys tend to struggle with this more than girls.

sewf, thanks for the tip about Oriental Trading Co.! I’ve been getting overwhelmed searching for materials, because nothing is organized by grade on the websites I’ve searched. Oh and my Walmart had some different workbooks for not much money too! They had phonix, numbers, colors, add/subtract. They had harder ones too but those are the ones I'm remembering that would mostly apply to K.

I have the info for K standards, it’s more of curriculum shopping. I’ll find a teacher’s manual and student workbook on one site, but no mention of extra materials needed and no option to buy. Another site will just have the resource materials, but no handbook. Basically I just want an all in one kit, geared toward homeschooling and not classroom, that’s not religious.

I'm happy to help anyone with resources for children ages 3-6. That's my area of expertise. I've been teaching preschool for over a decade.
I'm unsure what we are doing yet, but I am very much on the fence about homeschooling my preschooler along with two immediate neighbor children who are the same age as K versus going back to teach this year. My older two may be remote or virtual learning as well.
Number and age of kids: 4 (maybe 3 kids), 11, 15 Grade level(s): Pre-k, 6, 10 Homeschool or virtual: homeschool for pre-k, virtual for 6 and 10 New to homeschool or OG: pre-k teacher Do you SAH or Work?: Unsure this year, usually work at school during day Biggest concerns: timing, helping with high school classes Most looking forward to: fun activities with my preschooler Have you started lesson planning?: I have a full year of my own lesson plans that I will modify to meet needs and interests already Resources/recommendations/tips: be flexible, message me for help or questions for preschoolers and I'm happy to help How are you feeling? Worried

Also, there is a book called “What Your Second Grader Needs to Know” (or kindergartener, or fifth grade, etc) by E. D. Hirsch, Jr. I have found it helpful since it gives me an overview of what my second grader will be building to through the year.

I guess I belong here now. I did reach out to one of the OG homeschool moms before my school gave the virtual option because my kids were staying home either way.
umber and age of kids: 2 kids - 9 and 13 Grade level(s): 4th and 8th Homeschool or virtual: virtual with cohort style classrooms New to homeschool or OG: new to whatever this world will be. Although we had a very good experience with out spring learning Do you SAH or Work?: I workk full time. I will be working from home for as long as I want (I have a very understanding employer). DH is currently working from home but may eventually have to go back. Biggest concerns: My oldest is autistic and gifted. So we have some challenges. His team reached out this morning to let me know they will be scheduling our virtual IEP meeting so that we can plan his services that will be delivered virtually. Most of his issues are conversation based, so we will work on that at home, as well as through a private zoom group he is signed up for. His other issues involve needing to take breaks and stuff like that, so it's much less of an issue if he's at home. Resources/recommendations/tips: We have turned our dining room into a classroom - desks and bookshelves. It will be their learning area. I think it will be important for their concentration. I also plan to make sure they have headphones for their meetings. How are you feeling? I am nervous, but I think it will be ok. I was more nervous when I thought I would need to find resources to teach. As long as DH can still help with Algebra 2, we are good. I gave up on that crap.

Because I said what was going on in the spring in some specific instances was impossible and you addressed me then. I’m asking because it feels personal since I’m the one you called out before, but you are not normally a person who throws out slick digs and you’re normally quite against others doing it. I fully acknowledge that I’m having a sensitive morning so maybe I’m reading something that’s not there.

#1 - I didn't call you out. I responded to your post like is normally done on a message board.
#2 - You already responded with a fuck you to me so I rather not discuss the whole thing again.
#3 - it also is not a dig. I was speaking to prior posts. That isn't opinion, feelings, or digs.
#4 - I don't feel this thread is the place so as not to hijack but whatever. I run nothing. JMO
