I finished A Woman Is No Man, and it sort of fell flat for me. I felt like the characters were basically caricatures. I liked the idea of the story in theory, but felt the execution was a little too heavy-handed.
I am reading The Last Flight now (almost done) and it's alright. Curious to see how the author is going to wrap it up.

I wish I could find a book club around here! For those in one, how did you find it? This is kind of a virtual book club here but I’d love to discuss some things in depth and be pushed out of my comfort zone. I guess I need to google. Our local library and Independent bookstore both have several different clubs. They’ve all moved to virtual in covid times.

I’m not actually in any book clubs because I don’t like to be told what to read (I was an English major and I didn’t read for fun for YEARS because it had become work), but I know my local library has a couple and our independent bookstore has one. Also, Goodreads has very targeted book clubs (ex. the “Clean YA Book Club” or the “Everyone has read this but me...” book club) if you are interested in something like this thread, but more structured.

I have one of her books on my want to read list because she was recommended here! Would you recommend The Hunger or The Deep first? The Hunger was the first I read and I just loved it. I still think about it regularly. I’d suggest that one! Perfect! Just put in a library request for it!

I’m reading Mexican Gothic right now. I’m about 70% through. This book is getting very disgusting and there’s just not enough story... That's too bad - Mexican Gothic was one of my favourites this year! I feel like it did a great job of being a gothic tale, but just different enough to be new.

I didn't Love Gods of Jade and Shadow so I didn't bother with Mexican Gothic but now I might give it a chance. I love a good horror book.

I think I’m just realizing I don’t care for gothic tales. I try and try again...but the only gothic tale I ever really cared for was Wuthering Heights, but even that I have intense difficulties with now...that relationship. Ack. But I read at 18 and was in a different mind set them.

I think I am going to find the Bridgerton books to read at some point.
Still working through Beartown. It isn't that I am not interested, it is that reading is the last thing I want to do lately. Been watching a lot of TV, though, lol.

I loved Midnight Library. Invisible Life of Addie LaRue was also good for me but didn’t seem to weave the magic and real life as well. I questioned some of the logistics. I’m into books that have that magic realism aspect but they have to be tight with their rules of what makes the world work. I didn’t always feel that Addie LaRue was consistent. Midnight Library touched on so much more emotions, which made the magic part less noticeable to me. Matt Haig’s How to Stop Time is great if Midnight Library was a fave. Good to know! I have this on my kindle but haven’t started it yet.

Not sure if it’s still active but chicks on lit in goodreads was an awesome group years ago.

Been watching a lot of TV, though, lol. I totally get that. The only reason I've been doing any reading lately is because my friend shares her Audible account with me and has a massive library of audiobooks. It's so much more entertaining lately to have books read to me instead of doing the reading myself.

Just finished The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue and what a ride that was!! I loved it so much!! Addie’s character was just amazing - I ended up picturing her as Blake Lively, because of some similar qualities to the character she played in The Age of Adeline... and the name, of course.
Also pictured Henry as the guy from You, (Joe), Penn Badgley.
Anyone else visualize characters as celebrities sometimes? My brain is too lazy to imagine up all of these millions of different characters in the books I read 😂

Has anyone read Barbarian Days: A surfing life? My friend, who is not a surfer one teeny tiny bit, recommended it to me and said it's a fantastic book about so much more than surfing. Amazon has really good reviews too. I'm about 20% in and so far it's just surfing and getting boring. I tried reading an excerpt when it was in The New Yorker and didn’t make it through. Good luck.

I finished Now You See Me by Sharon Bolton. It is the first in the Lacey Flint series and I really liked it. There were a couple ridiculous parts but overall a good (quite gory) thriller. I’m going into the next book in the series.

I’m going into the next book in the series. I read the whole series and thought that the first couple were really good. The last two are still worth a read. All of her books have somewhat ridiculous twists but that seems to be common in all the thrillers I read! I’m reading her latest now, The Split, and enjoying it so far.

I just finished The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo in two days. I liked it a lot which was a surprise because I didn’t like Daisy Jones much.
