I finished a Gentleman in Moscow. I’m really glad that I took the recommendation here to read it! Wow. I had read Amor Towles’ first novel, Rules of Civility, and TBH, I’ve forgotten everything about it. I don’t think I’ll forget this one. It’s excellent!
I think that makes 30 books toward my Goodreads goal (which was 20); plus I’ve probably read (wild guess?) two dozen historical romance novels that I get on my Kindle from the library. A good reading year, if nothing else!
I have a huge stack that I can to choose from for my next read. I want to make it something equally good to end up the year.

Dear sweet Lord, Elin. I think maybe she should just get off social media. I understand being sensitive but if you’re going to react like that whenever someone doesn’t squee over your books, it might be time to step away.

I feel like I would feel like this, but also.. just step away. Send it to your friend and make fun of them behind their back lol. Like really this is not a good look

It sounds like she has incredibly low self esteem and needs some professional help.

Is she turning into Emily Giffin? Because one was more than enough.
I kinda saw her point in the FB controversy, because tagging someone in a private group is unnecessary. But a hashtag in a public space? Get over it.

I don’t read her comments as whiny. She’s not complaining about bad reviews, she’s complaining about being tagged into bad reviews. The reviews are to help other readers choose books, and tagging the author into a negative review makes it personal.

The reviews are to help other readers choose books, and tagging the author into a negative review makes it personal. My issue is the way she presents this. A simple "I'm sorry you didn't enjoy my book, they aren't for everyone, but don't worry you don't need to tag me in to let me know you didn't like it." would have been fine. Instead she goes on and on and on about how YOU DON'T DO THIS TO AUTHORS, THIS IS TERRIBLE, BAD MANNERS, BLAH BLAH BLAH.
So you got a bad review and got tagged in. That's OK. You're OK. Also I don't think most authors have such an issue with critique, at least I've not read similar rants, and I can't imagine she's the first person to ever be tagged to a bad review.
I find this lack of resilience very off-putting. And as usual I ask myself how would this be seen if a POC was writing these rants and I imagine there would be a lot less understanding or sympathy.
But I haven't read her books and have no skin in the game.

That’s why I saw her point in the FB group. But on IG, the hashtags are often how people will search for the book. I’m sure it’s hard to read negative reviews of your work, but she comes across as very whiny about it.

You don’t get a notification about them and won’t see them unless you go looking for them. Which is their purpose on a platform like IG—so people can search the content they’re looking for. If you don’t want to see negative reviews, don’t search for them 🤷🏼♀️ And this particular review wasn’t even that bad. It was 3 stars which many here have said in their own personal rating system means fine. Before the author commented several other comments said they were looking forward to reading the book.

I've never read any of her books (not my style) but she seems quite ... thin skinned for a very famous author. I do know most of the reviewers and authors I follow ask not to be tagged or hashtagged in negative reviews-especially since reviews are for readers, not for authors (author named hash tagged, book name is fine), but the way she goes about it was terrible.

I'm dying that all this was about a 3 star review. I assumed it must be about an extremely mean 1 star review.😂

I’m trying to get into Winter Solstice, but I feel like it’s off to such a slow start. Should I keep on?
I started Midnight Library also and I’m flying through it (compared to my normal anyway).

I finished Lost Girls of Paris The story itself was an interesting premise but I wasn't a fan of the writing - maybe I just feel that not all historical fiction needs to have a love story? I don't know.
As for Goodreads I'll give a star rating but not a review. I like personal recs, but rarely read reviews.
edit: had the title all wrong

I haven’t read it yet but I figure if it was that close between it and Anxious People, it is probably really good.

And it isn't even that negative - like she says it is a soap opera and silly but she can't put it down basically. Mary Kay Andrews jumped into the comments defending Elin/attacking the reviewer as well.

How far along are you? I think after the second chapter you start to see where things are going. I really enjoyed it.

Just finished “Maybe You Should Talk to Someone” and I love love love love loved it!! It felt like a therapy session itself. I’ve personally been considering going to therapy for months now, because this has been a really, really rough year (and obviously I’m not alone in that, but it’s many factors besides just 2020 difficulties), and this book was exactly what I needed to read to make me realize that therapy would likely be super beneficial for me.
The stories/patients in this book... just, wow.
And finishing that book means I officially met my Goodreads goal of 40 books this year! I didn’t think it would happen, because I just could not focus for sooooo long this year for sooooo many reasons. But I finally got back into again these last few months, and it’s been so nice!

junch817 I'm so glad you liked the book! I know the feelings here were mixed so I was always a little worried recommending it in case the person hated it😄. I loved it too. My mom experienced a very very difficult childhood and has spent her whole adult life in therapy and I really felt like I saw parts of her in the book (she also loved it). She says therapy was a huge reason why she was able to deal with her trauma and it was really nice to connect with her on this book. For me it was emotional but in a really positive way it didn't feel like I was reading some sort of trauma porn. What a great end to 2020 for you 😊.

late to the elin drama, but her books are definitely a guilty pleasure for me and i feel like a could have written that review. i don’t read it as bad. not groundbreaking stuff but i like the distraction.
just finished pretty girls and woof. i like thrillers but i feel like that was not what that was? i feel like all the “twists” were super predictable and there was just a lot of gratuitous violence. i think that is my first one star review on goodreads. i need to learn to just not finish a book.
planned on starting tara road next (my first binchy) although this tender land just popped up on my holds so now i’m not so sure.
