I honestly don't think Singh can win, so I feel like voting for him would be helping the C's. I'm so disgusted, there really isn't enough time for the Liberals to put someone else forward is there? Nope, not with less that 40 days, I just feel the timing of this is reeeeeally shady..

leatherpants Is there a big public clamor for him to step down, or are you just saying from a moral standpoint? (I am not asking in an aggressive tone, just as a clueless American.)

I haven’t seen a big outrage yet about it. I’m not even sure it’s my moral standpoint (although this certainly plays a role) but rather my general opinion of him as a leader. I have liked him and like many of his values and ideals and I have previously found some of the backlash against him just the most fucking hypocritical shit but I also in general feel he’s not strong enough to lead. So it’s really just my opinion (and was before this latest). There could be a clamoring soon although I live in the land of everyone hates to hate Trudeau on principle 🙄

I don’t think there is either. So I’m feeling very torn. The good news is that Ontario seems to realize that Ford is a moron and likely won’t want a federal conservative govt and Quebec doesn’t seem to care about the SNC stuff as much as anyone else. Ideally (for me), Liberals win and then elect a new leader. Scheer can go home and cry in his pillow.

I’m interested now that leatherpants has turned the election into a game of marry, smash, kill I need to figure out how to align myself here. I’m in a new riding and I won’t be surprised if we vote either Liberal or NDP and I’m okay with both. But who to marry and who to smash...

this has really screwed over my already confused brain. I mean i'm not voting conservative, im not voting green, i'm not sure voting NDP is worth it and i'm not sold on Singh, Trudeau just majorly messed up for the liberals, and fuck the peoples party. So WHO IS LEFT TO VOTE FOR!! I think i'm on leatherpants bench in going with Liberals and hoping they replace Trudeau asap. My feelings on him have always been that he's really great on foreign relations but after this i'm not sure that will be true anymore.

but also... i'd really hate to be held forever to things i said 20 years ago. Because 20 years ago me was not the same person I am today. I do think he feels regret and shame for his past actions and that his apology was sincere but it will affect how he is viewed from now on.

In no way does that excuse his actions, but at the very minimum hes able to say I was wrong publicly (over and over). I WISH that were the case here.
Also Canadian parties confuse me. I'm gonna go google NDP.

Checking in to see what people think of this Trudeau stuff. Man has this messed up the election. I think PC/Scheer will win because of this and Singh not being strong enough/people are racist. I’m tempted to vote Green but not sure if there’s even a candidate here in my AB riding. Otherwise I guess NDP? Ugh. All the leaders are kind of meh now.

It is something to say, yes I fucked up I’m sorry. Actions have consequences and losing the leadership and the election might be some of his. I don’t think many other leaders that have power in various places would make the apology though.

I’m not sure I’ve seen anyone excusing his behaviors. He should’ve known better. He has said as much and I can’t see anyone arguing other than yes, he really really should have.
I do appreciate though that I believe generally people can change and grow over 20 years and I appreciate that Trudeau hasn’t shied away from acknowledging or admitting his actions or the implications of his actions as he understands them. His actions will be telling as to whether that is lip service or not.
I just read that Singh has agreed to meet Trudeau if it remains private and is not politicized. I think that is extremely gracious of him.

Hmm. Upon a re-read, yes maybe I was excusing his behavior in my words. I’m not great at being articulate.
I do not mean to excuse his behavior. It was wrong. Period. End stop.
I appreciate that he may be a more aware person now and he has acknowledged that it’s him and that it was wrong. That doesn’t alter the wrongness then and it doesn’t lessen the implications or impact it has on people of colour in this country.

So our conservative candidate in my riding was out campaigning tonight. One of her people came to the door and said who she was etc. she said “are you voting in the federal election” I said “yes I am but not for Michelle so I’m probably not much help for you”. She was like “ooooohhhh” and wrinkled up her nose at me. For like an uncomfortable amount of time. Then she was like “do you want to talk to her” so I said “no thank you” and she stared at me while she stuffed her door hanger back in her pocket. And then my 18 mo old stood at the door and waved.
And so I left the door open so she could see the pleasant, polite, white middle class family who isn’t voting for her.
My petty petty heart just loves how shocked that woman was.

I mean, she is super popular in my area, she does a ton of community events (which I respect very much) and I haven’t even seen the name or a sign of any other candidates. So it will be an easy landslide win for her with very little opposition. I enjoyed being a very small piece of opposition.

I’m watching. Singh is doing exceptionally well I think. Like he’s likea or, so much better spoken than anyone else and when he talks, the rest of them just sort of listen.
I’m so worried that in 20 years we are all going to be saying - damn we should’ve listened to Elizabeth May. She has been the only one to back up almost all of her points with research.
