Currently trying to read Emma by Jane Austen. It's one of those books that I keep picking up every few months then pick up something else more interesting and it's taking forever to get through. I just finished Since We Fell by Dennis Lehane yesterday and loved it! It was slow to start but was real captivating the last half of the book. I couldn't put it down. I really strongly disliked Wild. s Emma is my least favorite Jane Austen book. I have a book by Dennis Lehane that I haven't read yet. Any Given Day I think? So many books to read, so little time!

Just finished The Handmaid's Tale for book club. Very well written and scary that something written in 1986 or whatever can still be relevant/timely today.
Best book I've read lately: Pillars of the Earth
I ducking hated The Time Traveler's Wife and The Lovely Bones.

So many Bernadette haters! I loved it. I thought it was hilarious.
I totally agree with the Gone Girl hate, though. I also thought Girl on the Train was so overrated (though it was better thanthe movie, which I found pretty much unwatchable).

I picked up her new one today too. In to the water. I think I have that in my ebooks holds now. I really need to start requesting more physical books, because they do come in much faster.

What are you currently reading? I've been trying to finish reading 13 Reasons Why.
It's for work related purposes. I'm having trouble with it because the font keeps switching back and forth to indicate the tapes are being played. On a positive note, I did think the Netflix series was really well done.
Favourite book you've read lately? The Miracle Life Of Edgar Mint
What's a book you dislike? Ironweed by William Kennedy

roguelily and oreobitsy Another good book about bookshops and readers is The Storied Life of AJ Fikry. I read that book in one sitting and just finished it feeling so happy and content. It's funny because the Bookshop book came about because it was recommended for those who like the Broken Wheel book (which I loved). I also have read AJ Fikry and loved it. You guys might be better at recommendations than my library website's recommended reads! AJ Fikry is somewhere on my TBR as well. Waiting for a kindle deal or a day it's all I can find at the library

Bummer to hear about the movie being bad, I like Emily Blunt and was hoping at least the movie might be good. Drat. Gone Girl was also too disturbing for me...maybe I'm just a wimp, but I had a hard time finishing it.

(I swear I don't work for Amazon, ha) Lol. I'm always plugging Amazon. Except for kid's books. If I try to order my kid books off Amazon, even with good reviews, I always get something that I don't like. For those I need to go to the bookstore and read the book before picking it out. Plus they have a train table so my son is content there for at least twenty minutes.

These seem to be Universally liked - are these the current era's Hunger Games / Divergent/ Twlight type of thing in terms of wide appeal and page turneryness? ETA "turneryness" is now a word

I am finally making my way into "My Brilliant Friend" (Neopolitan Novels/Elena Ferrante). This is so different from what I usually read and so I initially backed off ( a year ago) but people rave about these books so much that I am digging in and reading this. I have to read it with such a slower/closer eye so I am getting used to only making it through a handful of pages instead of a handful of chapters at each sitting or train ride.

I think I preferred the Throne of Glass series just because there was a lot more story development. I am anxiously awaiting the 7th book which comes out next year!

Currently reading: East of Eden by John Steinbeck Favorite book I've read recently: Also East of Eden. I read this book every year because I love it so much. No one can paint a picture with words quite like Steinbeck. Book I hated: I tried to pick back up on the Stephanie Plum series. They jumped the shark quite a long time ago. See also Shopaholic series. Cannery Row and Tortilla Flat are two of my all-time favorite books. I tried East of Eden many years ago, but ran out of steam. A book club that I occasionally participate in is reading it later this year, so I've been thinking of trying it again. I'll take your post as a sign that I should!

Currently reading: As Always, Julia. It's a collection of letters between Julia Child and Avis DeVoto.
Recent read I like: Crazy Rich Asians and China Rich Girlfriend by Kevin Kwan were good. Lighthearted, quick reads that were pretty funny.

I just finished The Invention of Wings by SMK. I moved through it pretty quickly, it was a heartbreaking story of true events so that was tough. I loved the imagery SMK portrayed in describing the quilts, that was my favorite part.

I finished The Nightingale. Wow was that book heartbreaking. So much sadness.
I started Station Eleven yesterday after it was recommended here. I love it so far. Definitely prefer the post pandemic parts over the pre pandemic. I like Kirsten's character a lot.

Currently Reading: On audiobook Talking as Fast as I Can by Lauren Graham. A new adult book called Addicted to You, I'm a few chapters in and may give it up. Tonight I'm starting Julie James 'The Thing About Love'
Recently read: I'm working my way through the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews. I just finished the Hudson Valley series by Alice Clayton. It's a good light smutty romance series. Also I really liked book#4 in the Racheal Peng series by KB Spangler. It reminds me of the JD Robb In Death series.
Book I dislike: Anything Dan Brown, the Twilight series, Water for Elephants and one of Chelsea Handlers books all get really bad reviews on my Goodreads.

I finished The Nightingale. Wow was that book heartbreaking. So much sadness. I stared at my ceiling for about 20 minutes after I finished reading that book. When my husband walked in and asked what was wrong, I said "life is so unfair!" ðŸ˜

As in, I wanted to read it all over again, but for the first time. If that makes sense.
