45thparallel are you talking about Station Eleven? I'm about halfway through and I'm excited to see where it goes.

I finished The Nightingale. Wow was that book heartbreaking. So much sadness. I started Station Eleven yesterday after it was recommended here. I love it so far. Definitely prefer the post pandemic parts over the pre pandemic. I like Kirsten's character a lot. That was one of those books that I felt lost after it was done. As in, I wanted to read it all over again, but for the first time. If that makes sense. Makes total sense!

roguelily and oreobitsy Another good book about bookshops and readers is The Storied Life of AJ Fikry. I read that book in one sitting and just finished it feeling so happy and content. I mentioned this one above. It epitomized the love of reading. I was perfectly happy after reading it. Sent from my SM-G930T using Tapatalk

I'm currently hate reading In a Dark, Dark Wood. I don't have high hopes that it will get better but who knows. One of my recent favourites that was sitting on my shelf for years before I got around to it is The Husbands Secret. I love the complicated women Liane Moriarty writes about. I feel like I recognize them. I didn't love In a Dark Dark Wood. It was just ok Sent from my SM-G930T using Tapatalk

Currently reading The Matchmaker by Elin Hilderbrand. Enjoyed Here's to Us and have another of hers on hold at the library so I guess she's my current kick. Also part way through Barefoot Summer by Carolyn Brown on the kindle but unlike my other kindle books it won't let me read it from my laptop - I sometimes sneak read when things are slow at work via Amazon. For whatever reason I found myself a little irritated with Truly, Madly, Guilty and The Things We Wish were True. Neither were horrible but I think I got a little annoyed at the first and the one story line in the second creeped me out. Let me know how you like The Matchmaker I read this one recently I loved it and put Dabney on my list of potential future dog names.

I finished Eleanor and Park. It was good and a quick read, but the hype of it made me think it was going to be more I think this is true of a lot of YA. More adults are reading more YA and raving about it, but the stories are simple and so won't appeal to everyone. When we went to Barnes and noble the other day the store clerk asked me if I liked YA and I said yes especially in the summer for quick reads. She said that is all she reads and that there are now more adults in that section searching for books for themselves then kids

I think a lot of YA seems to have good plots but not so great character development. It's hard for me to read because I always want to know more about the characters and feel like things don't get fleshed out enough. That said, reading YA is always good for a quick read in a pinch.
The last great YA book I read was The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas. It's about a girl who is dealing with the aftermath of being with her childhood friend when he is shot by police during a traffic stop. Even though it felt very YA-like, the characters were strong and the story was absorbing.

I read YA interspersed with other stuff, and I especially love it on airplanes or when I'm not feeling great and/or want to feel ALL THE EMOTIONS.
Here's my YA summer reading list, currently en route from Amazon in my big ass box of books:
-Alex, Approximately -The Names They Gave Us -Carry On (ive already read Fangirl..) -Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe -Boy Meets Boy -My Most Excellent Year

I try to get into YA but sometimes it just feels so simplistic. I don't know. I loved the Hunger Games but did not like Divergent at all. It's all about the characters and Katniss captured my interest way more than whoever the main character in Divergent was. I think I'm going to give the Throne of Glass series a try after all this raving I'm seeing.

I'm interested in this Throne of Glass series, but reading the summary the main character seems very Mary Sue-ish. Is she not as perfect as the summary makes her out to be?
Edited because I can't type these days

I think I'm going to give the Throne of Glass series a try after all this raving I'm seeing. There is definitely a wide range in YA. I've found that some of the "issue books" really sacrifice character development. There are also plenty of vapid romances, though that is the same for adult books. I also disliked the Divergent series. I bought the whole trilogy, but I never made it to the third (and I hate read the second). I didn't like the characters, and I thought the plot was just stupid. I did like the Hunger Games books.

Edited because I can't type these days The first book in this series isn't great. I later found out that it's because she wrote it while she was in high school. There's a definite difference between the first book and the rest of the series. If you stick with it, it's a great series. She is not Mary Sue-ish.

ah! I just remembered I read I'm Thinking of Ending Things cover to cover one Saturday night a few weeks ago. It was very suspenseful, would definitely recommend. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Definitely one of my favourite books of the year! This sounds interesting, but I want to be able to sleep after reading it. Will that be a problem? Is it just suspenseful, or does it have any violence?

Is it just suspenseful, or does it have any violence? Mostly suspenseful, I slept fine after reading it. There is one or two lines that may be a bit graphic towards the end, but nothing severe or over the top.

I can't seem to get into most YA novels that I try to read, like others said, some seem too simplistic as far as plot/characters go. But I'm also not a big fan of the whole finding their place in the world subplot that runs through a lot of YA's (or I've just read crappy Ya books lol)

Hmm, the last one I read was Salt to the Sea (this one I didn't like the layout of the chapters), the Divergent book 1 and Heft are the only ones I've read in the past couple of years, but I went through a phase about 5-6 years ago (when supernatural romances were everywhere) and read quite a few YA novels that revolved around that (and unfortunately, didn't have goodreads yet to keep track of them), and it just turned me off of them. I know there's quite a few good ones out there (my two SIL's that I do a book club with always rave about various YA books), but they just don't appeal to me.

I just thought of a book that was really hyped up that I greatly disliked-The Magicians by Lev Grossman. I hated the main character and hate read most of the book.

@blanche I've been listening in the car and not really paying attention. I get what you mean about the style being off putting, there's something about how she's reading it that I'm not quite enjoying.

billyhorrible, I'm happy I'm not alone! So many people adored it and I read it and was so confused as to why. The main character was the worst. I lent it to my SIL (who was about 19 at the time) and she loved it and found him so relatable, so maybe it's an age thing? Either way, glad I'm not alone.

I love all book talk, so I figured I would start a thread. What are you currently reading? The Story of a New Name by Elena Ferrente .. I'm reading it right after the first book in the series because they read more like one long book than a series. I have mixed feelings about the books, but like this one better than the first. Favourite book you've read lately? I loved Shrill by Lindy West but also found Lincoln on the Bardo by George Saunders absolutely weirdly fascinating. I also thought A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara was brilliantly written, even if it was so incredibly painful to read. What's a book you dislike? I am not a fan of books like Angels & Demons by Dan Brown. I find popular literature sometimes misses for me because I find it a bit simplistic. That said, I loved Big Little Lies. But I do tend to like YA. Also: I listen to a lot of Audiobooks because I can listen while I clean up, do dishes, cook, etc. Some books work great as an audiobook (see Big little lies) and others, not so much. Someone mentioned the Handmaids tale. That's one of my all time favorite books that really came alive listening to the Audible Claire Danes read version. Can highly recommend!
