This is making me think of the "kinder-moon" they have been pushing on the Disney Channel recently. Like, taking your kids to Disney World before all the pressures and stresses of kindergarten. Oh well I guess I'm a shit mom then. Jesus.

8th grade graduation is kind of thing here, but I don't remember people having individual parties or getting major gifts (let alone money). Maybe they do now? I don't know.
I don't have much of an issue with BYOB, especially since it's a party for people who are not of drinking age, but BYOB + potluck + expectation of a gift (monetary or otherwise) does seem a bit much.
If they're just asking you to help because you're family, I would feel a slightly different way, but it sounds like this is how the invite went to everyone not just you?
So, in this instance, no you're probably not a bitch.

I have no problem with BYOB/potluck parties but those should be in form of group celebrations (i.e., 4th of July cookout, Christmas Eve, Thanksgiving, etc). If they are throwing the party for their children and gifts are expected it is ridiculous to have guests supply the food as well.
I can understand asking a couple people help (maybe a relative or close friend being the waters or the salad or whatever) but not the majority of your guests.
I haven't read so this all may have been stated.

Ok I am not "no parties for poor people" I am poor people. I was "growing up hoping there was change in the sofa for milk" poor. But I still side eye the crap out of my SIL every time she expects me to bring food to her son's bday party. I never sign up for anything but a bag of chips because I get pissed that I'm expected to buy the expensive shit she wants her son to have (she makes a group message and sends photos of him posing at the store with all the crap he wants) and expected to bring food. DS1's bday is two days after nephews and I'm not spending our money hosting their party when I have to host my own as well. Sorrynotsorry.

Especially with everyone responding like they are honored and thrilled to buy whichever present they sign up for.

I didn't get a party for graduating High School or College... so yeah I'm bitter and would probably not even attend an 8th grade graduation. Where is the shruggie guy?!

I'm way behind and did not RTMFT past page 1, but IMO the whole situation could be remedied by the hosts explicitly calling it a pot-luck party to celebrate the grads, and no gifts please.Like, I am 100% behind the idea of having a casual family and friends pot-luck to celebrate the kids. I am *not* ok with the expectation of gifts.
I do not think you are a bitch for pointing out how this might look to others. You are family, that's your job! Tell them when they have things stuck in their teeth, and when they are being tacky. But I understand being left wondering what you did wrong, I have a sibling who goes to an eleven anytime I say anything that could be perceived as criticism. It's exhausting.

I live 10 minutes away from Disney, and it would still cost me like $500+ dollars for a single day of probably being able to go on 2 rides max because lines.
So fuck you Disney

::Record scratch:: People "sign up" for gifts to give? Well it's not like a sign up sheet or anything but everyone kinda chats and picks what they are getting. I may suggest a sign up sheet, it would be more streamlined and I wouldn't get a billion messages.
