My mom got in a car accident today. Nobody was hurt, thankfully but I had to go pick her up and I think her car is probably totaled. The other driver hit her head on while turning left, she just didn't see her. The other driver had kids in the car and my mom helped her get them out of the car because the mom was basically having a panic attack. I can imagine how scary it would be! Sent from my Pixel using Tapatalk I'm so glad everyone is ok.

Hi! In-laws arrive tomorrow. This should be fun (no, really, I actually like them.)
I had my first experience with a road rage asshole on my way to work today, so that was fun. I was driving on the highway when he came up behind me, got pissed because I wasn't going fast enough (I was already speeding, going about 78 in a 65), started tailgating me and flashing his lights at me. The other lane was wide open, btw. So I decided that I should probably go the speed limit and took my foot off the gas. He did not like that, started honking and then nearly hit me when he finally passed. Gave me the finger as he did so. I just waved back. Asshole.
There's been a bunch of accidents along that stretch due to speeding, including a fatal one just last week. I only hope the jerk hurts himself and no one else.

The irony in all this is that you are a cop and could have pulled him over for speeding if you were on duty. Right?

I waved at him with my badge as he went by but I don't think he cared. I really wish I had taken a picture of his license plate though. I've learned not to get involved with off-duty stuff unless it's life or death, though. Usually ends up being more of a headache than its worth. But if this crap had happened in my jurisdiction and I was on duty? Oh hell yes, I would have pulled him over and arrested him. That was more than speeding, that was reckless driving.

mommabakes I always go overboard too. I usually have 2-3 outfits as spares in the daycare bag, one outfit in the diaper bag and still have 2 weeks or more with of stuff in her dresser/closet.

girlonabike - We had a truck that was driving like that ahead of us Monday evening (and I mean like the cab of a semi). On a cars ass and last minute lane changing, etc. H wanted to get his tags and call it in, but I was too afraid that the driver was going to cause an accident and didn't want to get involved.

Tonight I realized we have found people that are the base of our "village". We have always liked them, but tonight the dad sprung into action helping C get untangled from a ride at a carnival. K was messing with my face so I couldn't see, but he got tangled up getting off the swings. The ride operator didn't even try to help. Another guy ran to help too. Just so thankful that someone jumped in to help him!

Did I ever tell you guys about the time that I did end up having to arrest an idiot driver when I was off-duty?
Prior to moving to my current home two years ago, I biked everywhere. (Duh, hence the name). So I had plenty of experiences with irate and asshole drivers. Comes with the territory when you are a cyclist in an urban area. I just take a deep breath and let it go.
Except one night when I was riding home from work. I had literally just left the station and gotten on one of the city's "bikeshare" bikes (these are bikes that you can rent from a small station for a short period of time and ride it to another station. Comes in handy if you don't want to wait for a cab/uber and don't have your own bike). I am off-duty, in regular clothes. Just a girl on a bike.
I was stopped at a red light on a one-way street. I could hear a car come up behind me. I hear the engine rev. I ignore it. I could smell the marijuana coming from the open windows in the car, and hear the laughter of a couple of dudes in the car. I ignore it. Then I feel it. BUMP. Asshole actually nudged my bike with his car. WTF. I look back, and I see a typical asshole car (shitty beater, tinted windows). And I could see the driver (wearing sunglasses at night, cuz douche) through the windshield and two other dudes in the car. I'm pissed, but I ignore it. I don't want to get in a fight. Light is still red. At this time, a cab pulled up in the lane next to me (yes, there was an empty lane that this dude was more than welcome to use). And the fucking douche bumps my bike with his damn car AGAIN. He actually pushes me into the intersection. I could see even the cab driver was like, WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING? And I hear the douches laughing through their open window. And that's when I said FUCK THIS.
I pulled out my badge and turned around. They saw it. And they panicked. They stepped on the gas and floored it around me (the cab had turned down the street, so the lane was clear). And went screaming further up the street. A one-way street. Which ends at another VERY BUSY and HIGHLY TRAFFICKED traffic light. And since I often rode this route, I knew the timing of the lights, and knew that they were about to get stuck with nowhere to go for a few minutes.
I briefly debated whether I really wanted to fuck with this. And then quickly decided yeah, I did. Because these assholes would do it again. All they saw was a woman alone on a bike and they wanted to terrorize her. Fuck that. Fuck them.
So I got on my police radio (I still had it with me since I was leaving the station) and called a priorty hit & run. I had the license plate. I had their location. I had their description. I broadcast it all and asked for help.
And then I rode after them. Like a damn lunatic. Like, wtf was I gonna do? But I did it anyway. Sure enough, there they were in the next block, stuck behind a line of traffic that was stopped at the red light. And they had no where to go. GOTCHA.
I got off my bike, got my badge out and in hand and started yelling at them to stop and get their hands out of the windows where i could see them. I was walking up behind their car in the street.
And that's when they decided to go into reverse and tried to run me over. They floored it in reverse and missed me by inches. Then the light changed and the traffic cleared so they put it back in driver and took off again (I had made it to the sidewalk safely). I got back on that radio and updated the location. And decided I should stop trying to playing superhero. I could hear the sirens coming anyway, and it was only a few seconds later that the cavalry arrived. The entire damn district must have heard my call and came to help. They checked to make sure I was okay, and I told them what happened. Then I heard another unit come over the air saying they had the car stopped a mile away. A coworker gave me a ride to where they had them, and sure enough it was those douchebags. I identified them and the car, and the driver was placed under arrest, along with a passenger that had an open warrant (because of course he did). Unfortunately, there was nothing to hold the other passenger with, so he was released. The car was searched, and although it was apparent that marijuana had recently been in the car (it reeked of it), they had obviously dumped it before being stopped.
The best part?
While the asshole driver was in jail being held pending his hearing, he made a phone call to his girlfriend. (Phone calls at the jail are monitored). Dumb-ass asked her to "please make sure you hide the gun & weed at my house cuz I think the cops are gonna search it". So based on his statement an emergency search warrant was issued and guess what? Gun was found in his closet. Did I mention he was already a convicted felon (for selling a variety of drugs, on more than one occasion)? He was offered a plea and was smart enough to take it rather than risk a trial.
Oh, and the kicker? At his sentencing hearing, he gave the judge a statement he wanted read. This is highly unusual (normally the only person to give a statement at the sentencing is the victim, which I did). The judge made an exception, however, because he thought it was important that I heard what this fucktart was trying to say about me. Basically, his statement was this: that he was a hardworking, persecuted man that had worked very hard to overcome the mistakes he made when he was younger (i.e. 3 years ago), and that he has been on the straight and narrow ever since, and he definitely wasn't driving around with a shit-ton of marijuana in his car, harassing women on bicycles, keeping guns in his house, no siree bob (nevermind that he had already taken a plea deal that admitted to all of the above). Nope, the problem was....me! You see, on that fateful night I was in a drunken rage, and it was I, a lone woman on a bicycle, that was the real villain! I had harassed THEM because I was drunk and out of control. And when I pulled out my badge, of course they ran because they were SCARED. Three grown men in a car were terrified of the off-duty female cop on a bicycle because...reasons? So of course they ran. And then tried to run me over...to escape my rage! Of course these weren't his exact words, but that was the gist of it. The judge was furious and gave him a pretty good tongue lashing. He was sentenced to three years I think? I don't remember.
His "statement" clarified some weird things for me. I had a very strong feeling that someone was following me in the months before his hearing. Some woman tried to call me at work saying that she had "important information" about the case. I ignored it because I only deal with attorneys, not randos. I think either his girlfriend or a private investigator was checking up on me to get dirt for his defense (this is an unfortunate common tactic). At the time, I did go to bars quite often after work, so they tried to make it sound like this was one of those times (it wasn't. I literally JUST left the station and was going directly home. And I don't usually turn into a drunken lunatic when I'm having a few beers after work. Usually).
Anyway, that's why I think very hard about taking off-duty action. That guy could easily have been armed. He had a lengthy criminal history. When folks like that are surprised by the police, they panic and do stupid things. I just want to go home safely.

She now has supplemental oxygen, so that is helping a lot. She was able to spend 3 weeks by herself back in her home last month, so that was good. I was worried about her every single day, of course. My dad's birthday is on Friday, so that's a bit rough for her.

Our cutoff is 8/1 and I know it's going to be an issue. It's one of the earliest cutoffs in the country. Abigail's birthday is 8/12 and there's no way I'm going to make her wait until she's 6 to start kindergarten. I'm already anticipating a battle because I don't think the school district will take them early. We are in the exact situation but I am leaning towards having him wait. He is a small guy (as is Mh) and I know they say keys always develop a little later. This of course depends on his abilities and where he is. If I think he is able, I will try to fight to get him in. I kind of hate the idea him being 17 right before college starts. To me, it sounds so young. Idk. All things being equal, boys tend to benefit from waiting more than girls do. If he's on the bubble for the age cutoff and he's likely to be a smaller kid, I can definitely see why you'd consider waiting. For us, Abigail has been in the 98th percentile for height and doesn't seem to be slowing down any. She's also ahead in basically every area of development (thank you older siblings) so I just can't see holding her back until she's 6. If we lived just about anywhere else in the country she would start kindergarten just after she turns 5. The stupidest part is that school doesn't start until mid-August here, so she would in fact be 5 by the time the first day of school rolled around. But we don't make the Aug 1 cutoff...

aydee if E is anything like S1 size wise I definitely don't think we'd hold him back. S1 looks about the size of a 7 or newly 8 yr old at age 5. So far, it seems he won't be.

jedi, It can be really hard when kids look older than they are. People unfairly expect more mature behavior than what they are capable of developmentally. Fortunately for Abigail, although she looks older than she is, her communication skills are really well developed. People tend to be shocked that she's not even 2 yet.

Isaac is mistaken for older to often. Swimming and other activities they assume he can go with kids his size and age appropriateness is thrown out the window
