October Reading Thread! 📚🎃

I read Falling by TJ Newman while on vacation last week and loved it! I definitely want to pick up the others. I also finished Graveyard Shift, a novella by ML Rio that came highly recommended by the folks at Barnes and Noble.

I just started listening to The Locked Door by Frida McFadden, I'm reading Drop Dead Sisters on my kindle and really loving it, and reading Shady Hollow in hard back.

it’s a bit heavy but also really well written. I think the Goodreads average rating above 4 is deserved for sure.

I've read some pretty decent horror books in the last week or so:

-Audition, an eerie Japanese horror book about a man looking for a new wife and the woman he picks surprises him in more ways than one. It was a little slow to start, but the last bit is worth it. Full of dread and atmosphere.
-Beneath The Trees Where Nobody Sees, a graphic novel that is very much a Dexter type story, but if it took place in Richard Scary's world (talking animals etc) - fun, bloody and very good for spooky season.
-The Night Guest, an Icelandic story of a woman who is exhausted and when she gets a smart watch it records her walking 40,000 steps at night - which she doesn't remember. I tore through this one in an afternoon - it was good, tense and a unique story.

I am currently reading Home Is Where The Bodies are and am enjoying it so far.

I finished and really liked The Comeback. It also had fun callbacks to The Stand-in! 4 stars.

I started Autumn Secrets by Katie Winters. It's more about mothers and sisters than I realized but like what I've read so far. I found her Katama Bay series when browsing for Christmas books on libby and have hope I will want to binge it like I did the Winter Street series last holiday season.
ETA Both series are set in the Nantucket area LOL.
ETA2 Katama Bay is Martha's Vineyard, not Nantucket.

I finished The Wedding People last night. It was ok? The subject matter was a bit hard for me but made it through. Would give it 3.5 stars.

Just finished Stay Strong by Sally McRae. I follow her on social media @yellowrunner, it was a heartbreaking book. She went through hell as a kid and teenager.

I finished Twenty Years Later.. woooow. It was good but had a lot going on.
Started Butcher & Blackbird and idk wtf to think about it and also nervous that my 15 YO daughter recognized it.
All the Colors of the Dark just showed up in Libby so that will be my next read.

I read the Girl Who Was Taken and enjoyed it. I really like Charlie Donlea’s plots but my one complaint is that I find him overly wordy. Sometimes his books take me awhile to get through but I do end up liking them.

I also read The Last One at the Wedding which was pretty dumb but a super fast and easy read. 3 stars.

I just finished What Lies Between Us by John Marrs and good lord was it dark. It was good but definitely messed up!

I’m going to start We Used to Live Here next.

I started Legends and Lattes but I don't know, - maybe I need to google what some of this fantasy stuff is because there are so many terms I don't understand.

I made it through the first chapter and set it aside.  Too many other things on my TBR list to get to before I decide if I want to return to that or not. I'm not sure what mood I need to be in for that particular book - but maybe someday?

I finished listening to Sundown Motel and it was good! I enjoyed it although it wasn't entirely unpredictable.

Started to listening to The Asylum Confessions by Jack Steed now and I can already tell I'm going to love it

Still reading The Unmothers (actual book). I like it but it's taken a minute to get really into it, kind of a slow burn. I think I'll finish it quickly now though

The story is interesting but my eyes close as soon as I start reading

I may put it down and read The Boyfriend as a quick read to see if it’s the book or me

We Used to Live Here was SO, SO weird. But I really liked it and found it incredibly scary. The reviews are super mixed for it which I do understand but I thought it was great.

I’m going to try The Puzzle Box next.

I’ve been on the waitlist forever with no end in sight so I actually just bought it this week because I wanted to read it before Halloween (and I had some digital credits). Now having read it though, I think it’s definitely worth the wait!

I checked out two new to me cozy mystery authors, Jessica Beck and Josi S. Kilpack. I'll be starting in the middle of each series to stay fall themed, but they both seem like good distraction books from real life IYKWIM. ETA correct book title

I finished A Demon's Guide to Wooing a Witch. Similar to the first book, I found it be ok, but nothing great. That said, I already grabbed my hold on the third book, so I'll read it even though I have low expectations.

I'm 20% into City of Souls and Sinners (House of Devils 2) and enjoying it. The first was better, but this one is off to an decent start. Reviews say it picks up after the first third, so hopefully it really does. I loved the first one.

Read Drowning as a quick slump buster. It worked. Quick read. Totally unbelievable so not as triggering as I thought it might be.

Started All the Colors of the Dark. It gets mixed reviews but I like it so far.

I am working my way through When the Moon Hatched. I am only like 100 pages in so far. It’s a lot of world building so I have had to go back and re-read stuff. It’s pretty good so far, it’s just a lot.

I just binged it last week and it definitely cut into my reading time, so I feel you!

I re-listened to Everyone in my family has killed someone and I liked it even more this time around. There was so much that there are things definitely missed/forgotten after just one read.

I also read Mexican Gothic and I really wanted to quit throughout the first half. It definitely picked up and I ended up liking it but that first half was very anticlimactic to me. I had trouble following some of what was going on but maybe I wasn't paying enough attention?

I am a third of the way through The Last One at the Wedding. It's a quick read but everyone in the story so far annoys me.

Feeling lousy again so I read almost the whole Imposters series over the weekend- set in the post-Uglies world. I thought the concept was pretty well done, with some hindsight from Tally as an adult.

I've definitely checked out of reading some lately. I went from anywhere from 10-13 books a month to maybe 3 or 4.

I finished HOme is Where to Bodies are and it was a fun thriller - I didn't quite guess everything and it kept me really hooked, definitely recommend it for this time of year.

I am reading Midnight on Beacon Street, and so far it's set up very much like an 80's slasher (babysitter alone with kids and things start to happen), but with more character depth - I'm really liking it.

I'm also reading Matty Matheson's new cookbook, Soup, Salad, Sandwiches and it's delightful. I made the tomato soup recipe and it was delish.

I completely agree. I finished it Friday and I can’t stop thinking about it. I am trying to get everyone I know to read it so we can share theories.

Well more so they can tell me theirs because I’m just baffled. I hear there are a bunch of Reddit threads so I might have to check those out.

ETA made the mistake of reading a good chunk when H was out of town. Will not do anything like THAT again.

I don’t think I have any idea what to believe, to be honest! But it’s a book that will stick with me. A lot of the plot was (intentionally?) confusing but my favorite part was how author created unease/terror in ordinary settings. It was just so wonderfully creepy. I’ll have to look for the Reddit posts.

New Taylor Jenkins Reid book this summer! Sounds right up my alley with the Houston/NASA connections. 2025 has some promising books coming out.
