Anyone else starting their holiday wish list ahead of time? I'm hoping that "add to list" will help me curb the "add to cart" urges.
My big ask will be a Paperwhite scribe, pretty sure I won't get it, but we'll see.

After starting and stopping The Frozen River again I read The Boyfriend. This was probably one of the better Freida books. I mean not great literature whatsoever but it was very enjoyable as a Fear Street throwbook kind of book. In fact maybe it was a plot to one of those, lol. Easy palate cleanser.
Not sure what is next. Definitely not The Frozen River. I just can't. Such unlikeable characters and boring. I don't understand all the five star reviews.

I'm slowly reading Ruthless Vows (I'm only having time at bedtime and not making it more than 10 minutes). Totally forgot what this book was when the hold came up.

I don’t think I loved it as much as some but I enjoyed it. The writing was very detailed and it was an interesting topic (and based on a true story!). That said, it’s really, really slow so I totally understand it not being everyone’s thing. |

Finished Fourth Wing! I really enjoyed it, it did eventually start to feel less like Divergent with Dragons but I still see the influence (with a dash of Red Queen tossed in). I am looking forward to Iron Flame, though I've heard from BookTok it was disappointing?
Up next is Just for the Summer by Abby Jimenez and Children of Fallen Gods (the sequel to Daughter of No Worlds).

Went back to Invisible Women about the gender data bias in almost everything. I had trouble breaking in because I wasn't in the mindset for non-fiction but it has been interesting.

I finished City of Gods and Monsters and it was excellent! I grabbed the second book in the trilogy to start tomorrow. It's just shy of 1k pages, but the first book was almost 800 and I ripped right through it. I suspect this one will be a fast read too, despite its length.

I read Spending the Holidays with People I Want to Punch in the Throat. I normally wait to read holiday books in Nov and Dec, but I needed the mental prep to see my extended family this month. It was my first book by the author and just the right amount of truth mixed with snark to keep me reading. 4 stars.
I was halfway through Inheritance by Dani Shapiro when I had to return it but plan to check it out again. It's slow but a fascinating story of the author's paternity and how it relates to the early days of IVF.
My easy weekend read is The Comeback by Lily Chu. It's predictable but fun and makes me want to visit Toronto and Seoul.

Last year I missed getting to read a lot of the holiday books I wanted to because I waited until like Thanksgiving to put holds out. After joining this part of the board, I started a Christmas Libby wish list just for that reason. I checked mine last night and put A Katama Bay Christmas (romance?), Last Christmas in Paris (historical fiction), and Rest Ye Murdered Gentleman (cozy mystery) on hold because there are already holds on them. Other books with no wait list yet are A Winter in New York, The Matzah Ball, The Christmas Bookshop, and Bright Lights Big Christmas. I seem to lean more toward contemporary romance or cozy mysteries than most people on this board LOL. |

Last year the only Christmas book I managed to get was The Christmas Wish by Lindsey Kelk which I enjoyed a lot. This year I have In a Holidaze on my list but when I tried to put it on hold it was actually available right now but I don’t want it now so I have a book borrowing dilemma

I read Just for the Summer over the weekend and really enjoyed it. It was a nice palate cleanser from the fantasy... which I'm right back into with Children of Fallen Gods (sequel to Daughter of No Worlds). My coworker is lending me Iron Flame, which I'll have by end of the week. I've got some mysteries/thrillers coming in at the library this week too.
Listening to Murder on the Orient Express - another read by Dan Stevens. He's a fantastic narrator.

My Libby holds are just coming up with summer reads lately, lol. But, a few holiday reads that I put on hold last year have come up, and I’ve “deliver later”-ed them enough that I should have some Christmas reading.

I started picking up holiday books throughout the year when I found kindle deals on them. So I've got The Twelve Months of Christmas, Resting Scrooge Face, and Four Weddings and a Christmas on my Kindle to read when I get in the mood. My book club also picks 3 holiday books for our December meeting (because they are usually short and we often don't meet in Nov....we try to pick at least 1 spicy holiday romance, 1 more classic, and 1 new book). If I still need more after those, this is one time I go in to the library and pick up actual physical books from their holiday display.

Quoting this comment from Adelbert about this book, because I read it after seeing her rating on Goodreads. I finished "A Children's Bible" by Lydia Millet on the train today and really enjoyed it. It was a dystopian climate change novel focusing on just a few teens on vacation with their families. I've read quite a few of these climate change dystopian novels and this one was surprisingly well done and I think this was my favorite. I finished it a couple weeks ago and I was so unsettled and anxious while reading the majority of it. I don't think I've ever felt so uneasy while reading a book. That's not to say that I didn't enjoy it. I did, and I'm glad I read it. But I was in a heightened state of alarm for the children characters in the story. Maybe dystopian novels aren't really my jam lol |
