I ended up starting with inheritance and got 100 pages read 🙌
After not reading more than 10 pages for a week I’m considering myself back into reading and pretty much right on track. I fall off late November and then the week leading up to new years I read like crazy

I finished System Collapse which is the latest Murderbot. It follows on directly from the events 2 books ago so I was a bit lost at the start of it because I couldn’t remember what happened. It wasn’t my favourite Murderbot I just finished this and it was my least favorite Murderbot so far. I feel like she's running out of ideas and then it should at least be fun, but it wasn't much fun for me it was more of a slog.

I recently had some thrillers come in from the library and I didn't love any of them. Good Girls Don't Die- this type of plot has been done by much better writers, I thought it was really silly. Black Sheep - Silly but I don't think the author wanted me to think it was silly? Didn't work for me at all. Strange Sally Diamond - super readable, really sucked me in, but I was so turned off by it by the end. I'm so tired of these books where all men are just absolutely horrible specimens. To read about two generations of men kidnapping women, impregnating them, and getting away with it was just infuriating, and then to have her adopted father to actually have been abusive as well was just too much. I mean women being abused is not necessary for a good thriller. It was like taking all the emotional character growth out of the book "Room" and focusing on the predator instead. 🤢 OK rant over

I just downloaded The Twelve Months of Christmas, and it will probably be my last holiday book. I made a Christmas tag wish list in libby to make my themed book search easier next year.
My favorite podcast green lit Mary Laura Philpott who (whom?) I've never read so I downloaded I Miss You When I Blink for this weekend.

Anyone else taking advantage of the Barnes and Noble hardcover sale?
I actually didn’t get any books for Christmas this year, but 2 friends separately invited me to hit up the B&N with them this week so today I got The Prospectors by Ariel Djanikian, The Beach at Summerly by Beatriz Williams, and The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese and my friend tomorrow is my romance guru, so I’ll probably grab a few of those or some of the Sharon McMahon book club picks.

We went today not knowing about the sale but I took DS to give him a new book (see: bad/funny gift thread about the baby books he got 🙄). He picked out like 5, MH got 1 and I couldn’t find anything I wanted enough to risk paying for 😂🤪. But was pleasantly surprised to see the sale prices on the receipt.

I read a book that has been on my Kindle for ages and loved it! Black River by Matthew Spencer. It’s his first book and the start of a series but the second doesn’t come out until last year. I needed a bit more from the ending but I gave it 4.5 stars and rounded up to 5.
Yesterday I finished One Step Too Far by Lisa Gardner. I liked it more than the first in the series but it was still a bit long winded with too many instances of the same self reflection by the main character. I did give it 4 stars.
I also finished Black Sheep. It was really promising at the start but really fell flat. I loved the idea, but it just didn’t play out well. I gave it 3 stars.

I didn’t read the books, but quit the show 5 mins in because I couldn’t get past her name being Belly.

I’m listening to one last book for 2023 - We Were Once a Family by Roxanna Asgarian.
It’s about the Hart family murders (two moms adopted six children and drove them all off a cliff in 2018), but also mostly about the history and current state of the foster care system.
It’s a really good book.
*and also I just deduced that one of the murdering moms is my second cousin 😱

I’ve been flying through Inheritance which is typical for a Nora book. I just don’t get her dialogue because people don’t talk like she makes her characters but I love her stories.
I’m also really enjoying dd and I curled up on the couch at night reading together and I’m sad that it will probably end when school starts back up next Thursday.

I started listening to Hidden Potential this morning as I was mopping the floor and I had to stop mopping almost immediately to go find my hard copy and a highlighter. 100 pages in and I want to send a copy to everyone know who interacts with children.

I am almost done listening to The Stranger Beside Me by Ann Rule, about Ted Bundy. It is good!
I finished a really dumb short story last night. It started out really interesting but the ending/resolution to the mystery was so stupid lol. It was called Oh. What. Fun.
The other dumb short story I read (even dumber than this other one) was called If The Fates Allow. All on Kindle Unlimited, at least.

This is a good use of tags! I'm going to copy that. I wish I could add notes to books, or maybe I should make a do not read tag, because a few times I've added, unaided, based on feedback here. But then I see it on some bookstagram and can't remember why it isn't on my to read list. (If that makes sense.)

I finished The Holiday Swap a few days ago. It was predictable and I still can't tell if it was actually a reread for me. Cute enough, I guess.
I started a book I received for Christmas, The Art Theif by Michael Finkel. So far, I'm finding it interesting. It is pretty short, so it should be a quick read!

The Art Thief is one I’m trying to get to this week too. I’m going to lose access to the penguin influencer app next week due to not influencing anymore so I’m prioritizing all the ones I have saved there.

I had no clue until my sister told me last night. I can't remember her really, but I'm pretty sure we played together as kids when I'd travel for family funerals and stuff.

And I think you'd enjoy the book too, willow. It's not really focused on the crime, but instead on the victims and the historical and familial context of how they came to be in the care of Jen & Sarah. It's quite critical of the child welfare system, but not in a way that would be painful to anyone who actually acknowledges the racist history and the continuing flaws of the system. I told my sister she should absolutely read it too.

I get irrationally annoyed when I check out a book that's not on kindle. I know I could check it beforehand, but I always forget.

I finished The Dark Bones and it was pretty good but I enjoyed The Dark Lure more. I gave it 3.5 stars. I'm definitely going to pick you more books by this author.
I'm listening to Those Empty Eyes and it's good so far, I'm about 25% into it.

I am not reading Those Empty Eyes but am reading another Charlie Donlea, Twenty Years Later and am loving it. These two authors were great finds!
