If I could never hear Paul Hollywood say “taco” again, that would be great.

That’s officially the first time I’ve ever watched Bake Off and been 100% sure I’d make a better technical than any of the contestants. Rebs putting on the guacamole 😳

Glad they finally got rid of Rebs. She seemed perfectly nice but man she just wasn’t up to par.

Oh my. My daughter and I were dying this entire episode. Between the cringing and the versions of tres leches. It was almost as bad as when they had them make American pies.

I visibly shuddered when Carol was peeling that avocado. 😂 But truly there just is not a good Mexican food scene in UK/most of Europe. We don't have many of the common ingredients, there aren't many Mexican immigrants and the "idea" of Mexican food is fascinatingly confusing. I was once served a hot tomato compote with tortilla chips and told it was salsa. 😳
Even the branded food i can buy is weirdly wrong. I can buy old El Paso brand taco and fajita seasoning, but it's for the European market and it is awful. So even when many Europeans are buying what they consider "genuine" Texmex products they are not what we know at all.
Which is all to say- it made no sense for them to choose this theme. *Eta this is my experience with trying desperately to find and makey own Mexican/Texmex food in UK, Spain, France, Portugal. I do not speak for ALL of Europe.

Honestly don’t get the uproar about the taco pronunciation thing. Don’t understand how a British accent saying taco is any different than an American accent saying taco. I don’t mean they sound the same but how it is a problem. to me it was more that he kept calling the tortilla a taco. not just the whole food item.

And also philo is right, it's not a problem and I am sorry for implying it was. I was in a shit mood on Friday and Paul overall was grating on me for a number of reasons and I posted without thinking. I shouldn't have focused on that one.

philo, Publix has quite decent tres leche. (At least- my memory says they do. I haven't had it in a while since there's no Publix in TX) This week's bakeoff didn't offend me. Minus the opening, I don't think anyone was intentionally mispronouncing anything. It was comical seeing them struggle with things that are just so common here. I don't know what half of the technical bakes are usually so it's just a strange flip to the dynamic.

Ok, I was also trying to figure out how to word this, but they know the theme going into the week, too. They get to practice at home for the first and third bakes. Only the technical is blind. So they can research online? They could have watched YouTube videos of people actually making real Mexican food and how to cut an avocado, etc? I know it isn't the same as tasting it and you would have still had a lot of "too much chili" or whatever errors, or Paul thinking it was too much chili for his bland ass palate, but whatever.
I mean, I wouldn't have expected an avocado in the technical, nor making a taco for the technical at all. And those refried beans. Oh man. I would have been researching other Mexican desserts/baked things on the side that could have been possible technicals instead.
Reminds me of the Top Chef season where everyone went home for weeks to prep for the finale in an Asian country and showed up and not one had prepped by learning how to cook in a wok. Padma almost lost her mind. I mean, they're playing for money in Top Chef and professionals, so a bit different, but if I'm going home to come up with and practice something, I'm going to figure out a few of the basic flavors of the cuisine.

I know in the technical they were given basically no information *for the technical, but they seem to be struggling a lot this year. I don't know. This isn't my favorite season.
I thought Syabira's watermelon puddings were pretty neat though!

Janusz and Sandro, and sometimes Syabira, are both good, but IMO, no one has brought the wow factor.

Agree. There's like, the three who are consistently good, but nothing they've made so far has been like OMG WOW. But maybe it's the nature of what they've had for challenges so far?
But even I could see there wasn't enough filling for that pie lady! C'mon.

I’ve also long suspected they choose a few duds on purpose, to make it easier to separate the wheat from the chaff, and this season definitely gives credibility to that theory. I think they may have accidentally chosen too many this time. You can’t convince me there weren’t dozens of bakers in the try-out process miles more qualified than several people eliminated early this season... and a couple still there.
I do think that it’s a little shady that Sandro was chosen to compete if he previously sold cakes, even if it wasn’t his main source of income. He’s fun to watch, though.

I was heartbroken for Abdul that his showstopper didn't taste good, because it looked so fantastic.

It was truly a “didn’t we almost have it all” moment. I was thinking maybe the best mirror glaze was incompatible with taste... like perhaps there is a reason she hadn't seen one that good before?

I agree that the bakers seem to be struggling more this season and there have been less standouts. It seems to be Janusz, Maxi and Sandro and then everyone else -- with glimpses of Syabira being up there.

That seems to be a consistent issue with every contestant - they either have the look or the taste but not both. Maxy and Sandro will definitely be in the top 4. I really like Kevin for some reason even though all of his stuff doesn't seem up to par. I'd like to see Dawn get out of her head and make it further cause she seems to always have great tastes.
ETA: And Janusz will be top 4 too.

I think the top 4 are Maxy, Sandro, Syabira, and Janusz. Could not guess a top 3 or winner right now, though.
Looking forward to seeing Halloween week tomorrow!
