Taitai Unfortunately we're completely tied to German school holidays, it's illegal to go away during other times. Like the Stockholm trip will be just H and I, otherwise we wouldn't have any flexibility. But maybe we'll check it out once

Oh, another book I DNF was Backman’s Anxious People. I’m kind of over his present tense, brisk writing style, and I just couldn’t get into it. I know the 3rd Beartown book is now out, and I’m debating on whether to give it a try. I liked the first one, and then the writing style started to grate on me during the second one (which I DID finish)….I don’t know if I should just power through and finish the series. I liked anxious people but have disliked the rest of his books. Everyone was raving about A Man Called Ove and I was just sort of like.... "what was the point of that book" after I finished lol. Was not a fan. I love the conflicting opinions, it's so interesting to me when I line up like 90% with someones tastes and then they hate a book I adore lolol I love it. and I really enjoyed Miss Moriarty.

I just started Lessons in Chemistry and am realllly liking it. It's like the perfect melding of my interests with the science stuff and cooking stuff.
I had put it on the back burner because I wasn't feeling a romance this week, then I saw it was shelved as literary fiction and was like huh maybe I'll give it a go. The cover definitely feels very romance to me.

I’m still making my way through Never Go Back. Usually I plough through a Jack Reacher novel but work has really been getting in my way this week, I’m aiming to finish it by the end of the month

I finished The Puffin Keeper by Michael Morpurgo and illustrated by Benji Davies (who I love). It’s a really sweet middle grade book with beautiful illustrations. I might be bias because I love puffins and lighthouses. I think it will be the next bedtime book for the kids after we finish Megabat next week.

I’ve been terrible and don’t think I’ve really come into the book thread for like all of 2022 😬😬😬 This month we took a long Scandinavian/arctic circle vacation, which gave me more opportunity to do some reading. I always seem to read more when there are long plane rides and train rides happening in my life. Here are the books I read this month: -Half of A Yellow Sun -The Spy and the Traitor -Acid for the Children (Flea from RHCP) -From Cradle to Stage (Virginia Grohl) -The Storyteller (Dave Grohl) -When Breath Becomes Air -Our Woman In Moscow -The Tao of Bill Murray When Breath Becomes Air was one of the most important and thought-provoking books I have ever read in my life. I’d been avoiding reading it, because I practiced (accurately) that it would make me an emotional mess while reading it. I think at one point on a plane ride, I was sobbing and pulled my face mask completely over my face to try to hide my tears, just sitting there crying, and the flight attendants were probably like, WTF is going on. But it was a fantastic read - I think everyone should read this book at some point in their lives. Very thankful to the author as well - truly amazing person. kittyriot - thanks for recommending this one to me a while ago. Acid for the Children was surprisingly good, and I loved The Storyteller as well. I’ve been on a Russia kick and highly recommend The Spy and the Traitor, based on the true story of Oleg Gordievsky, who was a KGB officer that defected to MI6. Fascinating and I couldn’t put it down. I DNF The Soul of an Octopus - I found the author annoying. But I’ll probably reduce my consumption of octopus now. Oh, I am so happy to hear it spoke to you. I know I was weeping in points too. Soul of an Octopus was a book club read for me, and if it wasn’t, it would have been a DNF for the same reason. Half a Yellow Sun is one of my favourite books. Absolutely loved that read and encourage everyone to check it out. I love African lit, but in general think it’s great to be reading in diaspora’s outside of your current region of residence. Keeps me grounded in that the NA mind set is not the be all and end all.

I will let you know in the end because there is an element of relationship but it's not really the focal point so far, and definitely not in a traditional rom-com way.

Taitai I adore When Breath Becomes Air - it's in my top 10 all time favourites. I made the mistake of reading it while my mom was dealing with some lung cancer stuff, so that was not a great time, I ugly cried for like an hour after finishing it. I always recommend it though.

I'm now reading Lincoln Highway and it isn't that fastest read for me but I am enjoying it and it didn't get a lot of good reviews here. I just finished Weather Girl which was a cute rom com and Tuesday Mooney talks to Ghosts which was a fun little mystery type book.

For everyone who didn’t finished Anxious People, the ending really tied it all together. I found a lot of the characters irritating- until I got to the end and saw it was all part of the plot. And then I loved it. Bold move though.

Backman definitely has a different style of writing than I am used to. Beartown took me a long time to get through, but ultimately I was glad I read it. I listened to the second one on audio, and I think it helped a lot, especially at 1.5x. The narrator was good, which I am sure helped.
I haven't read his other stuff because the slow burn books are something I really have to be in the mood for.

I had a credit for BOTM and since I'm trying to save money I only got one book so I didn't have to pay anything. I chose Breathless.
I finished The Coppersmith Farmhouse and it was awful. 1 star. Should have DNF'd it.
I'm about halfway through my ARC of The Woman In the Library and I'm loving it so far. Hoping to finish tonight.
I started Dead Silence on audio this morning and I'm only about 15% into it but I'm really enjoying it.

Oh man, I love Backman's books. They always start out like wtf is even happening but in the end he ties it all together and it makes sense.

I finished Insomnia and I mostly liked it. As usual, the ending didn’t quite live up to the rest. And it’s weird, very weird, but it was fast read and kept me engrossed. Also the epilogue made me LOL - a past character pops up.

I started Let’s Get Physical: How Women Discovered Exercise and Reshaped the World. Very interesting so far. I feel like others at the cross-section of the reading and motivation threads might also like it.

byjove I have the most recent Lady Sherlock and Virginia Speedwell books on hold - what did you think of them? Most excited for Miss Moriarty, I Presume? The Speedwell books - to me - seem to have jumped the shark after that really good one, where they were all stuck on an island. Miss Moriarity was great. I agree since A Dangerous Collaboration the Veronica books have been good but not AMAZING- BUT I will say I enjoyed An Impossible Imposter much more than the last couple. We start really dealing with VS's baggage, which I think was sorely needed. I gave it 4.5 stars (I rarely do 5). Definitely worth giving it a try. Oh good! This makes me more excited to read An Impossible Imposter - I was kind of debating whether to continue with the VS series. Really looking forward to when my hold for Miss Moriarity comes up too.

CestLaVie emma flippinchica I’m glad it’s not just me who is so-so on Backman. emma - I agree that Beartown was a great stand alone book. thatgolfb I’m the same way with slow burn books - I think I’m too impatient of a person, lol. Lormor Yes - some of the characters in anxious people are so annoying, and that is definitely a factor in why I DNF. Maybe I will skim and get to the ending.

kittyriot Yes - Half of a Yellow sun was so good. I didn’t know much about Biafra/the Nigerian civil war, and I’m really glad that I read this one. cdnfroggy I can’t imagine how difficult WBBA would be to read while a close family member was battling cancer. I don’t think I would have been able to read it in that situation. You’re stronger than me.
