I'm salty bc my kid failed a geography test because he was in school required quarantine and wasn't taught the material and nobody had any sort of plan for communicating with us what he should be doing during 10 days at home. (*no I do not expect the teachers to be juggling in-person and at home kids. It was inevitable that cases would occur and there was no plan in place from district leadership). It's a train wreck when kids are out on quarantine here too. We keep getting an email for every kids that is along the lines of "Soandso is out until X date and IF A TUTOR CAN BE FOUND, then we will advise you who to send work to" I've never seen a follow up saying a kid has a tutor. There are none. Like zero anywhere. They're just out then come back two weeks behind. It's a mess.

Sorry for this dumb question, but is there data showing breakthrough cases per vaccine? My brother seems to be a lot more confident in Moderna because anecdotally all the breakthrough cases he knows has been Pfizer but I don’t know if there’s anything to that.

I would expect teachers to come up with makeup work for a kid out sick for a week or two. so quarantine should be about the same, shouldn't it? As a teacher, there's a big difference between A kid, or even a good handful of kids, being out sick for a week or two and needing make up work. It's so different when you have some kids out sick, some out because close contact, all staggered, out by the dozens. It is SO MUCH extra work. So much.

It has never been my experience, as a teacher or a parent, that students who are out with a routine illness get work sent home on a daily basis. Typically work has been given to the student after they return to school and they have a certain amount of time to complete it. Now, to be fair, this was before every kid had email.

Even with the ability to get materials to kids electronically, it's still a mess. Half won't bother to check or do it, half ass, say they didn't understand and some won't and some use the excuse. It really hasn't changed much having immediate, electronic access. We're just trying to catch kids up when they come back at this point too, which is also typical of routine illnesses for sure. They're out for so much longer with covid than other things, there's so many more out, and they're just all over the place. Like I mentioned up thread too, my district is trying, but we can't find tutors. Or subs. Things are getting ugly.

Yes, Pfizer has a higher breakthrough rate than Moderna. It does appear to be statistically significant across all age groups, though its practical significance is another matter. They are both very effective against severe illness. link

The family near us that caught covid had work sent home for their kids with DS1 🤷🏼♀️ We did a drive by porch drop with it. This was 2 weeks ago 🤷🏼♀️

Pfizer has more here, but some of it also has to do with the fact that more people were vaccinated with Pfizer than Moderna, especially in the first few months. For every 5 appointments here you could find, 1 would be J&J, 1 moderna and 3 Pfizer. Now we have more moderna than pfizer, but we don’t have as many people seeking vaccination to begin with 😪

Our turn to play cold/COVID/allergies. I heard DS cough 3 times this morning in his crib. It was phlegmy. He has coughed some more since then but it has been dry. No fever or other symptoms and he is his normal crazy self, so 🤞. He doesn't have seasonal allergies that I know of.

Well. The booster is kicking my ass. So I guess side effects are the same as the 2nd shot lol. High fever, chills, actually more fatigue than last time, and my entire body hurts.
Hopefully it subsides in a few hours so I can get some shit done today. I managed to sleep until 9 which was nice though, despite how shitty I feel.

I alternated Tylenol and ibuprofen with shot 2 and it really helped

My fever is gone and I’m mostly just feeling tired and a bit weak. I just cleaned the dining table and the bathroom and it took a lot out of me. But at least I could do it.

Ugh I’m sorry the booster is kicking your butt willow. DH felt like garbage for the day he got it and the following day. I felt nothing, but I already felt like shit because of a cold so maybe my body just was like well ok. Who knows. Bodies are amazing and annoying.

Looks like we're seeing that two month COVID cycle again - with plenty of caveats. I think COVID will be endemic, but with science and good fortune may become a manageable health care issue for most. Excerpt Covid-19 is once again in retreat. The reasons remain somewhat unclear, and there is no guarantee that the decline in caseloads will continue. But the turnaround is now large enough — and been going on long enough — to deserve attention. The number of new daily cases in the U.S. has fallen 35 percent since Sept. 1: www.nytimes.com/2021/10/04/briefing/covid-caseload-retreat-us-cases.html

I wonder what the real reason is. It’s kind of fascinating how this happens every time.

That article is hopeful, though locally we are now at the worst single day numbers since last Dec, which worries me as it gets colder.

Covid test at 415 for the one at home so she can hopefully get back to school once this cough goes away.

The poor thing feels so self conscious about it “everyone will think I have Covid” 🙁 I actually just emailed the school nurse to let her know we have followed up with the pediatrician and started an inhaler. I hope everyone’s kids feel better!

Yeah I mean, I'm guessing that the article is taking the national statistics so probably overall, things are starting to look better. But around here, I'm getting a little nervous. Everything I am seeing, the experts here are thinking we haven't even reached our peak yet. Ugh. Can Oct 26 get here yet?
