Ran away to a hotel for silence and sanity. The quiet was glorious. Well this sounds amazing. Maybe I could do the same next weekend… 🤔

How are you breaking your toes!? Last year I dropped a dresser on my foot. Today I was trying to get a stubborn 4 yo off a stool; stool fell and landed on my toes At the beginning of the pandemic I broke mine by walking into a box. I, of course, did nothing for 4 months. It was still broken when I decided it was time to get check (of course it mag have been re-broke when I walked into something else). Waiting was a huge mistake and I still have issues.

Today I made:
Pan fried Mahi Mahi with homemade Mango salsa, coconut cilantro rice, chicken sausage and vegetable lasagna, savory artichoke bread pudding, roasted broccoli and carrots, ground turkey for tacos on Tuesday, rice and beans, copycat Starbucks coffee cake, and blueberry baked oatmeal, all in about 4 hours. Breakfast, lunch and dinner for 80% of the week are cooked. I love meal prepping.

More time at home with new debris in the way, more time barefoot, and more distracted movement through spaces.

addymac Definitely not an ass. Vacations with kids are not restful. I always aim for good food to compensate for the lack of relaxing. And enchanted that sounds perfect. I’ve contemplated doing something like that but never do.

So to premise, we watched the Paw Patrol Movie at home today. DD2 told H we needed 5 more cats so we could have our own cat patrol, and H told her we could get them if she could either train our 2 cats to 1. talk or 2. be superheroes.
So now DD2 is trying to teach one of the cats the alphabet.

But if she's willing to dedicate the hours and hours it will take to teach our two cats to talk, she'll be prepared to do litter box duty as well.

How do I fail so spectacularly at adulting?

My meal prepping is an attempt to use my tendency to hyperfocus so I can adult REALLY HARD on Sundays and then not adult the rest of the week. And I definitely wasn't weekly prepping when my oldest was 4 and my spouse worked crazy hours. I'm happy to talk meal planning and prepping bc I've spent 10 years honing my procedures and routines but like......you keep babies alive all day and I made lasagna

Im so tired of being on vacation with my kid. I just want to sleep for like a week. I’m so over being touched at all times and hearing “mama mamá mamá mamá” 57 times an hour. I feel like such an ass for feeling this way. Like I am legit looking forward to going back to work on Wednesday. And I have to solo parent until Wednesday cuz we just dropped dh off at the airport for his gma’s funeral. In the middle of our Hawaiian vacation, I told my husband that I need a night away at a hotel once we got home. It happens to everyone.

I’m terrible at thinking beyond today which usually results in a grocery store trip every day. But with me working exhausting hours and DH not functioning at the top of his game d/t mental health, we could really use some meal prepping guidance.

In the before times, I would menu plan a month at a time. When my H would be on a trip I would prep most of the food while he was home and then just finish up stuff for dinner. Over covid, all of this went by the wayside. It became too much to menu plan, shop, cook, fight the children over what I'd cooked. So, I started getting those boxes. It's really helped and it's saved us money, and we have less trash too! Yes, I CAN do all those things, but I wasn't. Be kind to yourself.

I have looked at a variety of them over the years and have never pulled the trigger because I don’t see how it is cheaper than grocery shopping for a family? Is it really cheaper in the end?

Speaking for myself (I use the box for H and I only) - the first few weeks I had a deal (like x number of meals spread out over a few boxes), and it was absolutely cheaper. Now that the deal has expired, I'm still running slightly cheaper to about the same. The main difference is there is much less waste, from either ingredients not used or leftovers not eaten. I don't know how much longer we will do it, but it's definitely given some more variety to - and taken guesswork out - of our weekly meal planning, gotten me cooking again, and cut down on takeout (so taking that into account too, probably still cheaper lol).

I also found these services in the us useful to shake up menu planning for a bit. I still have a handful of recipes from doing meal boxes in the US that i make regularly for dinner now. They just got added to the rotation and so it's helped improvey cooking. (and I'm a decent cook to begin with).

Breathing heavily right now. Work announced some new very stupid policies on raises/bonuses so i polished upy resume and am applying for new jobs.
Not sure if i will switch positions gut will fully intend to see what the market has to offer and at a min use it to negotiate a raise that I'm apparently not going to get that i was told I'd get later because I'm an awesome employee.... Actions speak louder than words stupid company. Saying I'm amazing don't mean shit when you don't pay me my worth.

I like the boxes because we get into a food rut otherwise, tend to order too much takeout, spend a ton of cash, and then regret what it adds to our waistlines. I don't think it's cheaper than buying the stuff for three meals and making them ourselves, but I am not coming up with creamy dijon salmon with lemony zucchini on my own. Otherwise I'm constantly making spaghetti, tacos, chili, etc. and just get so sick of it I order BBQ or pizza. I feel obligated to cook the thing in the box.

It's not cheaper than shopping the grocery store sales and planning it yourself. but if you are tired of shopping the grocery store sales and at a standstill on planning, they can be a good deal. The first few boxes are usually discounted heavily. So you sign up, get a week or two, skip a couple weeks, get the rest of the discounted boxes, and then cancel and move to a different box plan to try. Right now Every plate has deals where the meals are 1.99 each, and since they are owned by hello fresh, the quality is still good. they don't package everything by individual meal, all the stuff is in the box but not separated out. they say that's why they can do the meals for 4.99 regular price, almost half of hello fresh regular price.
