I noticed in the school schedule, all of the classes in ES have 30 minutes of "extension." This is basically a block for teachers to use to help students catch up from what they missed last year. Anyone else seeing that at their schools? My kid’s site plan added a block called WIN that isn’t specific to catching up from last year but stands for “what I need” and gives time for kids to get help or additional practice where they need it.

A has nightly homework too for her TK class. I'll admit I was pretty surprised, though I guess it makes sense that certain things may need in person help that would be impossible to do over zoom. Still. It's a lot. Godspeed friend! lol this year is gonna be something. And here I was back in the spring thinking we had likely come through the worst of it. 😔

I'm glad the first day was a success. But WTH to a fire drill the first day? In VA they have to have weekly fire drills during the first and last months of school. A lot of admins warn teachers they'll do one the first day bc there's not a ton of instruction to disrupt and, well, you kinda have to do them when the weather is decent bc August in NoVA can mean thunderstorms every afternoon Yeah, this makes sense. We have them monthly and Since I work with spec ed preschool that's where my mind went to the inconvenience. 😉

He has come such a long way <3

Sounds like the first day went as well as you could hope! Lunch was good. Teachers were nice. There was a fire drill. That's about all I've got out of them. Ha! All of the k kids came out in these ridiculously cute 1st day of kindergarten crowns. What??? I demand crowns!! I'm glad the first day went well!!

I’m trying to learn how to use CAD and it’s hard! I’ve got a pdf that needs to be converted to a dxf file. I’ve never used CAD, with exception to a brief time during high school lol. I’m currently tracing over it in another program and hopefully can save the file in the right format and scale it down. It opens as a huge file when I try to open it in the CAD program and causes it to freeze. If anyone has any tips, I’d be glad to take them 😅
Yay for learning new skills though!
Also, I’m already about to get a raise. He came to me on Monday and said I’ve exceeded his expectations and he’s thrilled with how much smoother things are running. We’re supposed to sit down next week to talk about it.

She’s a drafter and really bored right now Thank you! I would love some help/direction!! The software he bought is ViaCAD, so similar. I was given a pdf and asked to create it in ViaCAD. It’s only a 2D drawing of a flow diagram of one our systems, so it shouldn’t be too difficult. I’m using InkScape to trace over it and then can hopefully save it to the right kind of file, but I don’t know if that’s right. Ive got a about a million tutorials open in my browser lol

I got my oldest two to school today without tears (from me or them 🤣). It was a downpour right after the bus picked up my 6th grader but was basically done when it was time to walk the 1st grader. I do think my youngest and I feel a little lost without them here, but she has Pre-K orientation tomorrow so she has something to look forward to as well.
I'm feeling...guilty? bad? something about being happy they are back in school/almost back in school. I'm wanting to move forward in our lives but feel like I'm on edge waiting for the next crisis to derail things.

Our school is probably going to skip the in-person Scholastic book fair this year, but when we’ve been able to go, it’s been just as amazing as I remembered from my youth.

M's school won't have an in-person fair either, but poring over the flyers together will be almost as good.

Same! The excitement of that little flyer. 😁 I think this might be the origin story for my many piles of Emotional Support Books.

I would send home all of the flyers when I was in charge of scholastic for our preschool since it had such a wide age range. Usually the same 3-5 families that would order every month, but I kept sending them. Haha

Last year we did our scholastic book fair online - it’s a huge deal for us and we get a ton of money for the teachers to buy books. Anyways, scholastic set it up online on their platform and it was great. You could “virtually” walk around the room and look at the books. Not the same as the regular, of course, but I still bought a ton of books and enjoyed it.

Would it surprise you that we had the Scholastic book fair here last year? It was all outside and volunteers limited how many could be in the “fair” at a time. It was still a little chaotic but most people followed the line and waited for their turn.

To hear that you all also love getting the book orders and the Scholastic book fairs brings me joy. Ours was virtual last year and we ordered many, but I so look forward to my son experiencing one in person. He loves books and we spend many afternoons at libraries and B&N.

I grew up working class poor. One way I knew I'd Made It when my girls could pick out a book at each Scholastic order.
We also donate anonymously so the teachers can send home a few books with kiddos who also might like the opportunity.

When I was a kid I dreamed of the day I would be able to open a huge box of fresh new books, sort through them and make each student a little stack of the books they ordered, tuck their little paper order form into the top book and place their brand new books into their cubbies. You'd think that by the time I was a fully grown adult and actual teacher it wouldn't be as magical an experience as 2nd grade me thought it was. But you would be wrong.

I am very, very tired this morning and my whole life right now is trying to squeeze in Zoom meetings on the calendars of people who are already way too booked. So this is making me laugh too hard.

Almost never did I ever get to buy anything from the book fair. But I can do different for my kid.

dc2london, I saw the cutest sequin guinea pig t-shirt for girls at Target today and thought of you! Also, my DD is a complete enabler when it comes to Target. She tried to convinced me to buy all the decorative throws and pillows. We walked away with one very soft knitted throw.
