My latest pandemonium activity is binging Lost and listening to a rewatch podcast. H and I watched it when it aired and because we can’t quit anything, watched all the way to the awful end. 😂 We’ve never rewatched but it is quite a good show, and having the podcast to follow along is fun. Also I’ve forgotten a whole lot of it so it’s almost like a new show to me, and now I know not to expect my questions to be answered.
Are you partaking in any good distraction techniques lately?

I remember saying when Lost was on (maybe second or third season) that I hoped we never found out why they were on the island, because any explanation wouldn’t meet expectations. And then I was pissed about the finale until I remembered what I said, so I made peace with it. (That will not be happening with GoT, though 😂)

Instead of being like “But WHAT is the smoke monster?!?” I’m like, “ah, it’s my old pal Smokey.” Just accept things and move along. Happy birthday!

I don't know where to put this but this is randoms so I guess it works. As an update to my contemplating running for school board. I had a really good conversation with my mom's friend who is currently on the board. There are 3 seats open, 2 of which the incumbent is running again, leaving one uncontested seat. A woman has already filed her affidavit of candidacy and she is Black. I saw that just before our conversation and it had already made me feel less enthusiastic about running. Our conversation confirmed this, as my mom's friend said in full disclosure that she would be supporting the woman. I also totally get it because our district is super white and they have been hoping for a POC to run for the board for years. I think it is a really good thing and I don't want to run against her for the open seat, especially since she already has a kid in the district and has those connections.
I also learned that there will be 3 fully uncontested (or at least, no incumbents running) seats at the next election for 2024. So my plan is going to be networking like crazy over the next couple years -- joining the PTA, volunteering, going to events, etc. It's basically shit I don't love but I know is necessary to make myself known in my son's school and around the neighborhood. I actually left the conversation feeling relieved because this is something I want to do but was a little overwhelmed at the idea of being such a newb. My mom's friend said I'd have her full help and support as well as a couple other board members at that point too. So, it's a long term goal now.

willow, I think this is really a good plan. Not only to get yourself known around the school population, but to get a boots on the ground look at what works and/or is needed in reality, as well as from a conceptual/philosophical viewpoint. Also you'll get to know all the players, I would think - and get a feel for how much time/work is involved in a Board seat. If I had the choice of two candidates for one seat, the one who actually has been involved in the nitty gritty of that arena would usually get my vote. And, you never know - a board member may end up resigning early in their term, and depending on your district, someone known to the board to be interested may get the nod as a replacement. Good luck to you.

Did you know it currently takes 18 weeks to get a US Passport. Not a complicated one - a regular, new passport.
Gah. Just let me leave America.

FYI that is for renewals too and expedited only gets you sped up to 12 weeks. So if you need a passport soonish…
