We have and will continue to mask our kids indoors, but I mind my own. I don’t know why other people aren’t masking their kids and it’s not my business.

Our pediatrician said today that she heard some unofficial news that we could see vaccines for the younger kids at the end of August. She knows the trial doctors at our hospital so I'm going to lean into this info I would sob in relief. Seriously, I'm getting teary eyed just reading your post.

Missouri is a fucking shit show and I can’t imagine how I would feel if I lived there. I operate from a very fact-based approach. I check positivities and hospitalizations every morning, I follow other countries (fingers crossed we trend like UK) and I base how I operate according to that. When positivities were nonexistent, I let my kids eat inside, take off their mask if they bought a drink at a store, or even just because with my youngest because I know the sensory component of wearing a mask triggers him, then causes pooling of salvia (which essentially renders the mask useless). Now we’re back to masking indoors when we run an errand due to the recent uptick in numbers. But if my kid was having a totally bad day, I don’t know that I would lay down and die over it, especially since as I said before, actual specialists have said his masks are essentially useless because of his pooling issues. But my decisions for my kids are based on actual facts and their needs. It’s not going to ruin my life that some stranger in Starbucks feels bad for my kids or whatever, but maybe it’s helpful for people to know the thought process that goes behind my decisions. Not everyone without a mask is anti-vaccine/Biden/science/whatever. I get that. I actually very much value your input in covid discussions because of that approach. It helps my anxiety. Lol! I just think being in this covid hell called Missouri has skewed my feelings on the whole thing. We have never had good numbers, and even in my liberal blue bubble of a city, we were fake coughed on at work, people took off masks to sneeze, multiple coworkers were almost physically assaulted because they asked that people put their masks over their noses while we had a mandate. We have a new mandate now, and I am sure my fear of going into work tomorrow played a part in my judgement. I definitely benefit from an area that has always taken Covid seriously. I hope Missouri gets their shit together soon. I find the uptick in vaccinations promising.

I weigh risks and make decisions based on that. Maybe you’re picturing my kid in an unmasked crowd? I don’t know. We aren’t doing that.

As of June 4th our schools can’t mandate masks. By the end of May DD was completely over them and cases were very low so I let her go without one many times. Volleyball camp, restaurants, Target at off peak times. Truly I felt like I needed to see how I felt with school starting with no mask mandate. Felt fine….until July. We are back to masking everywhere now.

I mean, it's sad that they feel the need to disguise themselves, but I'll take whatever they need to do to get shots in arms.

The Pfizer CEO was on Andy Slavitt's podcast recently and when asked directly about ages 5-11, he said they thought they'd have data "after summer." I've read elsewhere they said they said having data in "late September" in some shareholder reports. It's taken about a month for FDA EUA approval after having the data. I'm hoping for somewhere between late Sept-late Oct to actually be able to walk in and get a first Pfizer shot for that age range.
But we shall see.

I’ve never taken my kids inside without a mask. They can’t get vaccinated. I guess I don’t understand why people were not masking their kids? I’m not trying to be judgy, I’m genuinely confused. I was one who asked about the benefit of having kids wear masks if no one else around them is wearing them (many pages ago). My confusion was because last year, the messaging was very loudly, “the mask protects the people around you, not the wearer.” Other people replied with info about the level of protection it offers the wearer, which I appreciated. I have tried to follow the science throughout all of this, but I was genuinely confused about the shift from “we should all wear masks to protect other people” to “we should all wear masks to protect ourselves.” I found the messaging very inconsistent, at least from the news sources that I followed. (I have been having my kids wear masks, and will continue to have them wear them when maskless school starts next week, but I expect it to accomplish fuck-all, frankly, when a tiny minority of kids will be the only ones wearing them. I am so angry at our area for putting the weight of this on my 7-year-old.)

I guess yeah, maybe I am. places like Target feel too crowded to me, but like when we flew a couple weekends ago, we ordered takeout food and found an empty gate and ate and drank there. I feel like a i need a guaranteed 20 foot buffer around to feel ok without a mask, even me and I'm vaccinated. In my out of control 18 months, it feels like the only thing I can control.

Are you guys going into stores that are very crowded? When I run into Target, it's usually pretty empty and no one is getting within 6 feet of us. Maybe for 1 second if I happen to pass someone in an aisle but I try to avoid doing that. I also don't take my kids a lot of places so I'm not running into it a lot.
Of course with Delta, everything is going to be changing I feel, so I'll be back to not really taking them in anywhere again.

I've spent the last four months wearing my mask and then apologizing like the awkward Minnesotan I am - I'm vaccinated, but I'm going to keep my mask on.

There was an article in the past day or two that echoed that but said there is a chance due to the heart issues in kids, it may be pushed out another month or two. In which case, under 5 would be early 2022. I will see if I can find it.

That's an easy tell that their parents aren't vaccinated, either. Which is a whole other level of sad. But another example of how adults just cannot adult and haven't since Memorial Day weekend '20. Yeah, if a parent comes in with masked kids, I assume that the parent is vaccinated, mask or not. If the kids come in unmasked, it's pretty likely no one is. Come spend some time where I live. Majority of adults are vaxxed, majority of kids are unmasked. Until the last two weeks with the rise of Delta, my kids have been unmasked in many places since school let out. And my husband and I are vaxxed.

I’m honestly still not sure having my kid wear a cloth mask to school will protect her whatsoever when she’s the only one wearing one but it’s the right thing so we will do it.

Hello from urgent care, where there were even people in the waiting room not masked. Despite the giant “masks required” signs. FFS. (Fortunately, I’m here by myself and can wait outside.)
I maintain that even if the masks provide a greater benefit to other people, not oneself, the messaging should’ve been “wear a mask to protect yourself.” Because that’s all anyone in ‘Merica cares about.

Preschool is only doing masks when the kids leave their classroom because the kids get the masks wet, constant touching so it’s “not working anyway”
I’m thinking of sending ds3 in his mask anyway.

I avoid crowded places like the plague and Target is usually a good bet. Never crowds. The only store I frequent that has what I consider too many people is Home Goods, mainly due to layout, I think.

Until a couple weeks ago cases were so low there was almost zero risk in being in some (not crowded) places without. I've been keeping a close eye on our transmission and vaccination rates. We are in a low risk spot. I'm also being mindful about where we go- we go to stores on off hours as much as possible (I do this anyway because people are annoying). We leave DS home 99% of the time anyway though. If he comes with, we/he make a point for him to distance as much as possible. He's 10 so this is possible. If I had a 2 year old, my feelings would probably be different. I have masks with me if the situation ends up being different than anticipated. And my comfort level has gone down considerably the more we learn about Delta. And he will be going to school with a mask even though it's not required. And fuck yes to end of August shots. That would be fucking fantastic.

Honestly I’ve felt very comfortable up until recently because nowhere is crowded and Delta wasn’t bending us over

It was confusing given Delta.

I was going to the gym for half of the year wearing two masks because at one point we were told one mask wasn’t enough to protect us from Covid. Like, what happened to that?

My kids' preschool did this. They work masks outside of the classroom and when they were playing outside. I will say that the 5 year old's mask was covered in spit and disgusting every day so there were times I questioned was it even doing anything for him.
