Possibly a dumb question, what does 5 for Fall mean? 5 days a week of school this fall. Most kids were either virtual or did a hybrid week in my area last fall. I think it feels weird to me because it sounds so much like the political slogans that were being used by advocates for full reopening last winter. I am happy that we’ll be open 5 days/week next year, ftr. It just feels like using school and county resources for political messaging since our school board elections are a pretty BFD. Plus the school district has had a couple huge fails this month - they had to indefinitely postpone ESY for about half of the eligible SpEd population because they couldn’t staff it. So it seems really weird to see all of these self-congratulatory posters. My friend who is on the school board has been getting death threats. It's crazy.

As of right now our district is planning full in person in the fall but I suspect masks will remain in place. I’m fully planning on my son going to K in September in person, especially given the great vaccination rates in my specific area and the fact that the vaccines will likely be available in the fall for him. Same here.

I feel like contentious school board stuff in NOVA has been over-the-top in general lately.

I'm just hoping that the upcoming CDC guidance on masks and schools is explicit that ALL children should be masked until there's an opportunity for full vaccination in their age group. Because that would give districts the ability to point to CDC guidance to back them up and help protect kids who haven't had the chance to protect themselves.
I will say - I'm not optimistic about the messaging though.

We're fortunate that even if our district doesn't require masks (I think it will), I know that my kids wouldn't be the only ones wearing them. There would be large numbers of kids wearing them.

richard That is how I feel about our district too. I’m fairly confident they will continue to order masks until the kids can be vaxxed but even if they don’t, I think a lot of parents would make their kid anyway. Given my school district though, I’m pretty sure masks will stay mandatory at least for elementary for sure.

I could be wrong but I think the new legislation that was passed in NY last week basically forces schools to require masks for elementary and students/teachers who aren’t vaccinated.

It does until repealed. It’s a tricky move though as it is strictly DOH code- 10NYCCR is the state sanitary code. Jurisdictional nightmare as, until covid, DOH did not regulate schools

I get the feeling that both my kid's district and the one I teach in will drop masks as soon as possible once the state give the all clear.
No clue about kid's district (DD1 will be in first grade in person, DD2 and DS in DC still) with virtual. I know my district was planning to offer it because they've seen the positive experience it offered for some kids. The plan was (is?) Have one virtual section for every class per grade level, so teachers would essentially teach four in person sections and one virtual section per day. But that's subject to change, obviously. They have no intention of putting fully virtual kids into in person sections though, thank goodness. I hate hybrid teaching.

I’ve been worried about the fall as well. We did remote learning this past year which was basically me teaching my kids using a math workbook, worksheets, and what I could find on the internet to explain things to them. My area is very anti-mask and I believe masks won’t be required. DS will have no problem wearing his mask but DD won’t want to if others aren’t. I wouldn’t be as concerned except the baby will only be 7 months when school starts again.

Yeah, I definitely think we're going to need to move from measures based on number of cases to measures based on hospitalizations as the vax campaign advances.

Hm. With this I have changed my mind. I don't think there will be any last minute save from the state to offer funding for online students after all. www.texastribune.org/2021/06/28/texas-staar-test-results/I mean I still think these tests should have been scraped this year entirely but they weren't so no doubt this information will be used to scrape any lingering online plans. I don't like this though. The education gap just got widened significantly.

right there with you Dr. Cox . I'm assuming masks will be few and far between based on what I see in stores. Damnit, Abbott. I still haven't signed my youngest up and I'm also still torn on K vs 1st grade. I need someone to adult for me. I'm tired of every decision being such a thing. Is k required in your state? Its not required in az. If so id do kinder and register and then be more ok with bailing on kinder to do it homeschool/preschool than to bail on 1st grade. We homeschooled K this year and my DD will be a very young 1st grader (turns 6 next week, so 7ish weeks from the cutoff).

I'm heading off to a work lunch today. It's the first time we have been together since March 2020 (there are only 8 of us). I have strategically planned my seating next to those I know are vaccinated.

PSA to NYers- if anyone here or knows of anyone who holds a license and registration issued by State Ed or DOH that is expired but was granted an extension due to covid, those extension are now voided with the expiration of the SoE and revocation of EO 202. We got word this morning about it. They were originally extended to 7/5.
We don’t know of any emergency rules reinstating this grace period

This forum is a joke. Its a place for the republicans to air grieve fed and blame people for their stupidity and they have a panel of "Drs" that gave been wronged by the government where they have a chance to complain about how they have been wronged and how they don't believe the rest of their colleges.

Also has anyone been told they need a tetanus shot after they complete their vaccine cycle? They told my that and I'm wondering if they are just trying to get him in for a booster or if it's actually related.

Nope x 4 parents, 2 sisters, and all of my friends that I am close enough too to know their vaccination status (my vaccine was delayed for 2 weeks because of an injury requiring a tetanus booster / irrelevant)
