I feel like I should add, DS’s (private) school had them in masks all year, he’s doing this summer camp so he’s in a mask all day for that, and one of the teachers said she thinks they’ll all be in masks for next year too. Who knows about that, though. Luckily it’s a private school that has been super strict and good at preventing any CV spreading all year.
So we have DS in a mask outdoors a lot but he also is so used to it, it’s second nature to him.

We don't have the girls wear masks outside anymore, unless required/high density like a zoo. School/daycare required masks outside, and all of our summer camps do too, but I think if they can be outside without being on top of each other, that's probably a bit overkill. All of this. Though if they are already wearing their masks, I also don’t encourage them to take them off. They tend to forget they are wearing them and just keep them on.

We're still being cautious and masking around others, the things I'm reading about what they're now calling the delta plus variant have me feeling fairly skittish.

Yes, this is true for my girls too re just leaving them on.

The Delta variant is in my county 😭 It’s probably everywhere. I know it’s been in my county for awhile but cades are still dropping. I hope it kind of burns itself out before school starts again. In um, 7 weeks. We don’t mask outside. We haven’t since last summer honestly. As science has evolved I have felt very comfortable with most outdoor activities. DD still wears one indoors mostly but we do have maskless indoor play dates now that it’s a billion degrees outside. School in the fall will be maskless because Abbott. I don’t even know anymore.

The Delta variant is in my county 😭 same. and it's expected to quickly become the most prevalent variant. I keep thinking we'll be fine and then see we stay around 500 ish cases a day reported and around 20 deaths a day--28 reported today. so 1st place for deaths and 2nd place for number of cases and while AZ is way up there at 49% vaccinated, my county is stuck well we are up to 38% vaccinated now.

I was getting pretty laid back about masks outside for the littles but this delta variant has made me mask them up at school/camp and places where I don’t know the kids like zoo

I feel like it’s easier to just have him wear mask than to expect him to be able to keep distance, plus I can’t control other people’s behaviors.

goldenbird, fuck Abbott forever and ever amen! I see there is a special legislative session coming up on July 8th. Can't wait to see what kind of fun things comes out of that. I do hope they ultimately approve funding for virtual students though. While I am (mostly) okay with sending DD to school in the fall with zero masks anywhere I know many others are not and need the virtual option. Districts had already thoroughly planned for virtual academies. Hopefully it will happen this time even though it will probably be tied to something completely awful again.

Not unexpected, and I'm in the camp that for most, the reward of the vaccine offsets the risk, but FDA adds warning to fact sheets. I just wish people would read/listen through entire articles or news alerts to get context as well as headlines LOL This is important information and should be widely broadcast, but I can already imagine twitter now. 'The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Friday added a warning to patient and provider fact sheets for the Pfizer and Moderna Covid-19 vaccines to indicate a rare risk of heart inflammation.' link

richard I hope that's true. I know someone pointed out that boosters likely wouldn't be as bad, but the thought of dealing with the aftermath of shots every year makes me want to cry. Still will get them whenever I need to, but I really hope it's not every year.

I saw that headline and it felt like yet another example of the back and forth. Booster every year! Just kidding! Boosters every 10 years! Oh wait, maybe it will be every 2 years. I guess I'm not getting my hopes up yet. Also don't know what it means for someone like me that has mix-match shots.

Who even knows how long any of them will be effective

And we just won’t know how that goes until it happens. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. 😕 It does give me hope that in 3-4 years, when there is more widespread vaccination across the globe, the awfulness of pandemic/epidemic COVID may mostly fade into a distant memory. Hopefully the global public health community can find creative ways to make the mRNA vaccines more available in countries with medical infrastructure limitations.

Did you see the latest research that shows that mix and match vaccines do seem to provide very good protection? It was in the opposite order - adenovirus vax, followed by mRNA, but the researchers seemed hopeful that it would work for all effective vaccines. Fx that proves true for you!

I wasn't posting it as a fact that people won't need boosters. I just thought it was interesting as there's much to learn about mrna vaccines in general.

Scientists speculate based on the data they have, and as more data comes in, recommendations and speculations shift. I know things will continue to evolve, but the way these vaccines are performing actually do raise my hopes a bit!

Anyone else struggling with school this year? My oldest desperately needs to be in school and around kids, but our district is not masking next year and no virtual option (thanks Abbott!). I’m hoping the vaccine is available, but he starts middle of August and I don’t have high hopes that it will be available for 5-11 by then.
I want to send him in a mask anyway, but he’s already nervous the kids are going to make fun of his leg braces, and I hate the idea of him also being the possible only one in a mask.

Aw, this is rough. It’s so frustrating that people won’t mask kids up in school at least until vaccinations are available. If it’s any comfort to you, DS has worn very visible leg braces intermittently since K and has never had any issues with teasing. The other kids don’t seem to care at all. He wears them with tall white socks and blends right in with all the other boys that wear their athletic socks to their knees.

right there with you Dr. Cox. I'm assuming masks will be few and far between based on what I see in stores. Damnit, Abbott. I still haven't signed my youngest up and I'm also still torn on K vs 1st grade. I need someone to adult for me. I'm tired of every decision being such a thing.

Its not required in az. If so id do kinder and register and then be more ok with bailing on kinder to do it homeschool/preschool than to bail on 1st grade.
