We finally got on board with $1 million lottery for those vaccinated, and the first winner was a teacher!!! If only there was a way to do in categories so that HCW, essential workers, etc could have a better chance at winning it after all they've done.

Anyone else struggling with school this year? My oldest desperately needs to be in school and around kids, but our district is not masking next year and no virtual option (thanks Abbott!). I’m hoping the vaccine is available, but he starts middle of August and I don’t have high hopes that it will be available for 5-11 by then. I want to send him in a mask anyway, but he’s already nervous the kids are going to make fun of his leg braces, and I hate the idea of him also being the possible only one in a mask. There is a special legislative session coming up on July 8th. Our district is one of 30 in the state that have urged the state to put funding for virtual learning back in to play. I think it will happen but who knows what terrible thing Abbott will pair it with. Ugh I hate him. Fuck him forever. Anyway I am not going to borrow trouble here. Yet. DD will be in person no matter what. I think I will have her mask when going to/from class but not actually IN class. Our county is doing much better than the state overall in regards to vaccines and I assume the same is probably true for you since you are either in or near a big city. Hopefully transmission rates stay low and it won't be an issue. Eagerly awaiting more info about vaccines for young kids.

The HI governor announced yesterday that starting July 8, vaccinated people just have to upload their card. The state is probably not getting to 70% by the time we travel so the kid will still have to get tested unfortunately Awesome! Thank you for the update! I think dh had read their policy was testing required for 4 or 5+, so maybe poor DD is going to be the only one stuck testing before vacation. 😢🤦♀️ This is sort of what I anticipate happening for our October Hawaii trip.

I don’t know. I thought I read that the testing might be lifted come august. Things with covid are ever evolving. Your DD might be spared (or heck, dare I pray that our vaccinations might be EUA for that age range by then?!)

Yes, I’m in San Antonio and we have a good vaccine rate as well as low COVID numbers. Ugh, this is all so hard.

Our district is offering a subpar virtual option for 2021-2022. We ended the school year with masks required and by all accounts it seems like it will be masks required for fall. If that changes, I'm not sure what we'll do. I'd hope most people would have their young kids wearing them regardless. That's so tough Dr. Cox.

I had already signed DS up for virtual schooling next year (he is 10). Then Illinois made the requirement that kids need to be in school unless there is a medical reason. He has asthma that he has been hospitalized for before, so the doctor had no issues filling out the forms

He has asthma that he has been hospitalized for before, so the doctor had no issues filling out the forms I'm glad you're able to get your medical exemption. I honestly think they should still allow virtual to be open to all. I think masks will still be required in schools at least in the fall here.

I know our district is planning on no virtual option for next year unless required by the state. Our virtual wasn’t really virtual this year anyways so I get why they want them in the building if possible.

I took the dog for a walk past our elementary school this morning. The school district has put out “5 for Fall!” election style signs all along the street. It seems kind of weird that they feel like they need to advertise like that.

As of right now our district is planning full in person in the fall but I suspect masks will remain in place. I’m fully planning on my son going to K in September in person, especially given the great vaccination rates in my specific area and the fact that the vaccines will likely be available in the fall for him.

Same here. My twins will be in K and my oldest 1st grade. We were already told there will not be a virtual option. They’re all going and I’m thinking masks will be in place until the kids can be vaccinated. Right now our zip code is 82% of everyone ages 12+ had received at least 1 dose so I’m feeling good about school come September.

DD will be in person no matter what but it’s strange that this school year is giving me more anxiety than last year did! We have 7 more weeks. I guess we will find out rules in the next few weeks but with Abbott’s rules there isn’t much to be done.

NJ governor just said masks won’t be required in schools in the fall and it will be up to districts. >.< Also no virtual option. I’m sure him cheesing out has nothing to do with being up for re-election in November. /sarcasm Our superintendent was already hinting that he didn’t want to require masks unless the state required it. (I wrote a long letter in objection.) Feeling really anxious right now. ETA: Just finished sending my angry tirade to Governor Murphy through ResistBot

Our district has said masking in the fall. If that changes I will have to reevaluate our plan. And it will suck since DS already went back for 2.5 months of 2nd grade.

I've heard similar from other districts. Not trying to stress you out but email your district and tell them how important it is. I get the feeling they only hear from anti maskers. My kids will be virtual in the fall after our experience this spring. Once they get vaccinated I'll reevaluate

NY will have a virtual option. The question is whether it's run by the district or county or something else. My oldest is immunocompromised so I already put our notice into the district that my kids would be virtual

For those contemplating virtual options, does it matter to you if it's your district doing it or if its from another source?

Our district is still planning on masking in the fall, and as long as they keep with that plan, I'll feel ok about sending my eldest to TK. If that changes, I won't want to send her but I agree that it would suck so hard because she definitely needs the interaction too.

My plan is to go back after vaccination so we hopefully won't be in it too long but it will most likely be done through our county program. They run a lot of stuff and I've always been happy with their services so I'm pretty good with that. We don't really have a choice as far as virtual if there is no masking so I would probably take whatever they offered. We have a very specific situation though

It seems kind of weird that they feel like they need to advertise like that. Possibly a dumb question, what does 5 for Fall mean? 5 days a week of school this fall. Most kids were either virtual or did a hybrid week in my area last fall. I think it feels weird to me because it sounds so much like the political slogans that were being used by advocates for full reopening last winter. I am happy that we’ll be open 5 days/week next year, ftr. It just feels like using school and county resources for political messaging since our school board elections are a pretty BFD. Plus the school district has had a couple huge fails this month - they had to indefinitely postpone ESY for about half of the eligible SpEd population because they couldn’t staff it. So it seems really weird to see all of these self-congratulatory posters.

@minerva thank you for explaining. That makes perfect sense now.
We have a big year of school board elections as well so I bet we start seeing fun signs soon.
Our state is fully reopening July 1 and at the rate I have seen masks on kids at Target, I just don't see a mask requirement happening here. Anti masks make much more noise than us that want masks.
Luckily Summer Camp requires masks and it is going so well so we get to keep going for at least one more month, then I will stress about Fall.
Eta I am mobile, can't tag properly.
