Snapshot from the CDC presentation about the cases. There have also been 3 reported cases with moderna, but the platelet counts aren't low enough for them to consider it (this is what is unique about these cases- low platelets- which I guess is against the general of how these occur). View AttachmentThat’s really interesting. Clotting is generally caused by platelets congregated and sticking together, so low platelets (thrombocytopenia) makes clotting a lot less likely. It is interesting. It makes me think almost something like DIC?

It is interesting. It makes me think almost something like DIC? What is DIC for the non medical in the room? Sorry, it's disseminated intravascular coagulation, I mainly know it as a pregnancy complication but other things cause it as well. Basically there is clotting which uses up the clotting factors/platelets which then results in bleeding. Its very rare but very dangerous. The clotting and yet having low platelets that was mentioned earlier just seems similar. Obviously nothing is known yet for sure.

It happens in critical patients, post-resuscitation, trauma, etc. all ages. Our nursing school instructor said they used to call it “Death Is Coming” it can be corrected, but it is very bad and often fatal.

Ugh, so my state is doing away with state mandated restrictions and leaving it up to the counties. Most counties around and including mine are like we are going to open 100%. We’ve had increasing cases and middle/high schoolers just went back full time (vs hybrid) just over a week ago. I’m a little concerned and wonder why our governor thought this was a good idea when he says we are in our fourth wave.

Interesting numbers deep dive thread. I have some holes to poke in some of the assumptions but learned a lot about how to think about this J&J problem.

And I think this is similar to AstraZeneca as well. For me if it's available in the U.S. when we visit in May I'll get it. Right now it looks like H and I won't be offered a vaccine here where we live until July or August. And three additional months of protection would be worth the risk for me. But if there's a chance we can get vaccinated with Biontech/pfizer or Moderna here in May or June then I think I would wait. I do love that it's just one shot though.

I think since the EU and especially Germany bought a lot of CureVac, things will speed up once it's approved, which should be May/June. And we're at 17% with first vaccination, so I'm really hoping June or July is realistic for the first shot for most people 🤞

Hamburg just opened up 70+ and our summer holidays already start at the end of June. I would love to be wrong but I don't think I'll even be able to get one shot here before they start. But I'm comfortable with the J&J risk so I'm pretty sure that I will be able to get vaccinated somehow in May.

H got his 2nd shot last night! His parents (also vaccinated) are visiting next weekend and my kids are so excited to see them. I’m hoping that the ILs are willing to babysit one night so that H and I can have a patio dinner date - it’s been over a year since we have had a date or eaten at a restaurant and I miss it.
We have tickets to the drive-in this weekend. I hope they keep doing them after the pandemic is over - we all had so much fun at the last one!

I just need to vent. Our fire department does an annual dinner. Obviously last years was cancelled. H and I are both officers so essentially the fire department has been a bubble place for us out of necessity. Our dinner is this Saturday. It was supposed to be members only plus 1. So at most 35 people. I wasn’t super comfortable with it but knew we could easily spread out at those numbers. Now we invited a whole family to present an award so it’s up to 60ish people. There’s no way now I can go with my anxiety. We can’t space out at those numbers and way too many people in a room for me. But I have to still go down to pay all the vendors and then spend the night with the kids by myself because H has to go. And ftr record 85% of the department isn’t vaxed (H is and I have 1 shot done). I’m mad the department didn’t cancel again and now I have to be left out because I can’t take the risk with the kids.

And H officially has the post-Pfizer version of a man cold. The poor guy never gets sick, so he doesn’t know what to do with himself right now.

I'm hoping so. I was little discouraged listening to the briefing yesterday though- they were very like well we don't really need the J+J to meet our vaccination goals, and I could definitely see them restricting it from white women in my age group- who seem most at risk. I think it's really interesting that the most at risk of that type of CVST is also the same demographic that is most susceptible to the allergic reactions with the pfizer and moderna shots. I'm sure that's not a coincidence.

So hopefully you'll still be able to get it because, in your case, it's probably an ok calculus.

Everything that I’m reading indicates it won’t be restricted but there will be guidance on when to use, so provider discretion will be allowed. Please don’t lose hope.

You know when is a FANTASTIC time to get a multi-day menstrual migraine? When you're 6 days post-J&J shot. *facepalm*
(It's not extreme pain or out of the ordinary for me, so not ringing alarm bells. Just annoying AF.)

During the pause no one is giving it. Well, maybe someone out there is but it’s been pretty universal that providers have taken the recommendations to pause. But when they clear it, it will likely be with additional guidance for usage but not a complete restriction on use.

kbw I’m sorry. That’s really frustrating that they added more people. Is anyone else also not going? Maybe you could do a unofficial get-together with them.
