adelbert If you will be trying to find a shot or two in MN in May, let me know if you need any help! I've gotten pretty good at navigating the system and figuring out the timing and such. Plus by May, it should be a lot easier to find appts too. fatpony Even though I got vaxxed elsewhere, I kept my name on the standby list because I was curious how long it would have taken to be offered it. I JUST got the email late yesterday. Which was about what I expected when they first announced it, and seemed like a great way to get it early before we knew how much things would ramp up these last few months.

I just need to vent. Our fire department does an annual dinner. Obviously last years was cancelled. H and I are both officers so essentially the fire department has been a bubble place for us out of necessity. Our dinner is this Saturday. It was supposed to be members only plus 1. So at most 35 people. I wasn’t super comfortable with it but knew we could easily spread out at those numbers. Now we invited a whole family to present an award so it’s up to 60ish people. There’s no way now I can go with my anxiety. We can’t space out at those numbers and way too many people in a room for me. But I have to still go down to pay all the vendors and then spend the night with the kids by myself because H has to go. And ftr record 85% of the department isn’t vaxed (H is and I have 1 shot done). I’m mad the department didn’t cancel again and now I have to be left out because I can’t take the risk with the kids. Yikes, 85% of the department isn’t vaccinated by choice? Case numbers in our area are way worse than a year ago so if the majority of people weren’t vaccinated I don’t see why such event is a good idea now vs. last year. I’m sorry.

kbw I’m sorry. That’s really frustrating that they added more people. Is anyone else also not going? Maybe you could do a unofficial get-together with them. Everyone else is going. I tried to get H to say something since he outranks me and he doesn’t want to start anything so it ultimately is what it is.

A month ago I had email alerts setup for open vaccination appointments to help people book, and if I didn't click immediately and type fast enough they'd be gone. Now, the same open appointments I saw this morning are still there this afternoon. I'm glad it is easier to get appointments, but I'm not sure if it is more vaccine available or people not taking the appointments. I really hope it is not the latter The people in my inner circle are all vaccinated (other than kids), but I've also heard of people with family members or coworkers who aren't in a rush to get it/aren't getting it at all. It's frustrating.

Interesting numbers deep dive thread. I have some holes to poke in some of the assumptions but learned a lot about how to think about this J&J problem. I think this is good perspective. I understand the pause in understanding the small risk. Knowing that risk vs a clot from covid or BC is good, but I like his point about how since all have been from women of childbearing age, that does seem like a reasonable solution to only keep the pause on that group, with the exceptions of whether another vaccine option isn’t around for them. ETA: but I do appreciate the transparency because like the other vaccine with clotting risks, I would have actively tried to opt for the other options for me personally, given that I already have clotting risks.

My in laws called Mh yesterday about going to visit Memorial Day weekend. I got excited for a second, because I could be swayed into that. We're vaccinated and they are too, so it would only be my kids non-vaxxed. But then Mh said they're inviting 15+ people to have a redo funeral for MIL's mom. Popped my bubble real fast.
For my household, three sets of kids under 16 is a no go.
He said, plan your gathering but don't count on us.
COVID sucks.

How dare you put public health restrictions in place due to a virus we don't believe in and won't get vaccinated against and how dare you not protect children from that same virus at the border

I'm sorry notblanche, that does suck. I feel like this is a rare time where me being the oldest grandchild and the only one with kids so far works in our favor since all of our gatherings will be vaccinated adults and just our kids. I hope the kids can get vaccinated this fall/winter asap.

richard I think it was you that mentioned the MIIC for vaccine records? Anyway, thanks for the heads up! I requested my records last week and within like 3 days or so I got an email with an encrypted file I could download as a PDF. So now I at least have a digital record of my vaccines which makes me feel better about not keeping my paper card. I have no idea when/if we will ever need it for anything but just good to know it was easy to get in MN.

I hope the kids can get vaccinated this fall/winter asap. It's like that on my side of the family too. My family is small, just my mom and brothers and me, and I'm the only one with kids. My one brother who still lives at home got his first Pfizer two weeks ago. Which means I will get to see my mom soon!

notblanche, that does suck. I can commiserate. My mom was trying to make get-together plans with my cousins and their children for when we visit this summer. I had to remind her that E is still high risk and we can’t get together with other families with unvaccinated kids without masks and distancing. She had only been thinking about the adults when making plans. And now she’s apparently worried about seeming rude to my aunt. 😬

On DH's side, the only other little kids live out-of-the-country. We haven't ventured beyond visits with my mom yet but that's because in-laws aren't quite fully vaccinated yet and my family is pretty spread out geographically. But it's nice to know that there are possibilities out there.

Basically the same for us, my cousins are all adults (well I have two that are 10 and 13 but we don't see them often) and my brothers too, but just not at the "kids" phase of life yet. My H only has one brother with no kids and all of his cousins are spread out and we never see them. I do have a planned get together with my two BFFs and their kids on May 1 because all of us adults will be fully vaxxed and they have been just as careful as we have been this whole time. I'm so excited to see them again and my oldest is pumped to see his friends.

willow, we have a bit of the opposite. Junie is the youngest cousin by quite a bit. I think the next youngest is my niece who is 10.

Well, a booster was always thought to be necessary and year is a whole lot better than 6 months! I also recently read that with the mRNA technology, they might even be able to make a yearly combination flu/covid shot.
