I had not. I will definitely talk it over with my primary. Thank you!!! ETA: I’m hopeful MRNA vaccines will allow more people whk typically couldn’t be vaccinated to be vaccinated. The traditional route (ie: j&j would definitely be a no go because of using a portion of a virus).

She was in the ICU after a flu shot so I'm hoping if she got it and was OK maybe you can too.

lemondrop, that will be just for kids 12 and up hopefully by the fall, right? Under 12 comes in 2022? Would be great to have it authorized it for both groups though! Thank you for you expertise in this area. I am mostly a lurker in this thread but your knowledge has been greatly appreciated! poof

How do you think younger kids are going to handle the side effects? I've been seeing it is expected the younger will have more prominent side effects is holding true for them too. We've been so careful not to say feeling crappy right now is related to the shot- I don't want to scare them. Like how do you explain to an 8 yo that I'm going to give you this shot (maybe twice!!) and you are going to probably have a fever and really sore arm and maybe have to spend the day in bed. I could see convincing them for one shot, but bringing them back for the second... Cost benefit analysis doesn't have quite the same sway at this age. lemondrop maybe you have thoughts on how this is going. poof

byjove, i am expecting full on man flu in tiny bodies-at least for my boys. Thanks for the reminder I should keep some pto in the bank so I can attend to their every need and want. Will be giving my MIL heads up to assist with mine, especially if I can vaccinated more than 1 of them at a time. She LOVES caring for them and helps when I’m spent. Yay for vaccinated and helpful MIL.

I was just thinking that I'm surprised that the government hasn't sent J&J shots to embassies and consulates for americans living abroad. Has this come up in briefings at all? I would be shocked if this happened. Perhaps for the FSOs working in the actual consulate/embassy, but like as a group we are generally ignored. There is a pervasive misconception that Americans abroad are excessively wealthy people, so our concerns are often missed, overlooked or ignored.

LOL to the government caring about American citizens living abroad. Embassy and consulate workers I could see, but the rest of us? Nope. We vote in the last state we lived in, so we're nice and spread out and so no one cares. The government likes to make our lives difficult in many other ways, I doubt the thought of getting us the vaccine has even crossed their minds (we're not allowed to buy mutual funds abroad because the US government is apparently afraid we'll be duped into buying something we don't want?!? and yet not allowed to own a mutual fund in the US unless we live there at least 6 months out of the year, so thanks for that; also, required FBAR reporting of foreign accounts applies to us and is a serious PITA, which is absurd, as it's meant for something entirely different than tracking my German retirement account). #bitter, apparently

Ok. Sorry for posting so much of my drama. I just need somewhere to put this out. My cousin is maintains her O2 at 94. They have decreased the high flow cannula because she had a good day. She’s is good spirits and said she has a lot of kittens to save - she does foster and they give her the babies that need the most attention like bottle or syringe feeding.
So she is in good spirit. I’m still scared. She is the closest thing I have to a sister. I keep telling her how she needs to get better so I can send kitten formula. I can’t tell her I a really feel at this point because it won’t help her
Sorry for my emotional dump

I don't know what kind of business you're thinking of, but freelance work is not subject to taxation in the US if you're doing it abroad. I'm not exactly sure why or how, but my tax consultant (an American living in Germany who specializes in tax returns for US expats living in Germany) explained it once upon a time and it made sense. I have to report it, but it doesn't count toward the foreign-earned income exclusion max. So look into it - it might end up being possible for you.

What gets me really angry is that so many banks won't accept US citizens as clients anymore because the reporting requirements are so onerous. Our stupid government is making it unnecessarily difficult to just get access to basic financial services when living abroad. Grr.
And totally off-topic for this thread, sorry. To swing things back around: no way will Americans abroad get vaccines provided by Uncle Sam.

I'm sorry for the inane question. I didn't realize.
I asked because I have a friend living abroad and she has several severe conditions (she's been on a daily chemo pill for 5+ years) so I am worried about her.
One of the reasons they continue to live abroad is that they wouldn't be able to afford health care here.

crimsonandclover, just curious about the logistics, are you covered by the German insurance/medical program? Or is it difficult to 'get in line' for vaccination from either country?

I have regular German insurance and am in the normal line together with all residents (citizens or not). It's just that the EU has nowhere near enough doses, so everyone is waiting. Thankfully there's no discrimination on the German end, and I don't feel like the US needs to come to my rescue on the vaccine (although I wouldn't turn it down if they did ).

Germany could have had enough doses if they didn't give 70 million away... But what's another lockdown? Lockdown light, lockdown hard, Easter with just one person not even another family... it's no wonder that basically no one is strictly following the rules in Hamburg right now. But we're accepting it all with as much patience and humor as we can. I'm so happy that the vaccination process is going so well in the U.S. I think its so so awesome how all the logistics have worked out and how so many people have come together to make everything work. It's really cool. Pictures show up in our newspaper about drive in vaccination centers and it's mind boggling. I love it!! I also think Americans should be really proud of how well the process has overall gone.

adelbert, compliance is awful right now, I think in part because no one can keep track of what applies and the logic is non-existent. I had to schedule a passport picture appointment for the kids this afternoon, and I asked whether we needed to show proof of a negative test. The woman told me no, that passport pictures in the studio were considered an essential service, but that if we wanted to look around the store afterwards, we'd need a negative test. The store that we have to walk through to get to the studio...

And my doc recommended it to me as early as 8 weeks, maybe earlier but I was 8 weeks when the rec came out. It’s so frustrating. I want to talk to her about it but I’m sure it wouldn’t be easy to decide to go against your doctor’s advice.

Oh hi. People here are so clueless.
Them: Anyone know why norovirus is going around and taking down whole daycares and offices working in person?
Everyone: It ran through our house too!
Me: Silently judging and making sure none of them are people I know.
No one: Wash your hands and wear a mask.
