I was already worried about this swelling fourth wave, especially with all the variants. The CDC director being that worried has me moving towards scared. It's tough to grasp in my mind because locally, we just hit the lowest number we've seen since the pandemic started, then rebounded slightly, but we are still in the low 4% right now. I I don't want to go back to where we were over Nov/Dec/Jan. Same. My county is technically meeting the CA Orange tier criteria and should be moving down soon I believe, so I’m not seeing the surge locally. It’s startling to see the numbers compared to January

CDC director goes off script at briefing and emotionally pleas on people to not give up on restrictions, say she is scared. Yikes. SC is currently in record low cases and our positive rate is below5% for the first time ... ever? Everyone is thinking and acting like Covid’s on its way out or gone and it scares me.

byjove, hopefully they can get an idea of the issue and get you on a path to healing. ldubhawksfan, qualifying isn't a technicality. It's based on specific factors to give folks the best possible protection. I'm glad you're getting a vaccination.

In AZ, we're still above 10% positivity. But you wouldn't know it from the travelers, the restaurants, the people living their best non-COVID life. Or governor repealed all mask mandates that were not in place as of March 11, 2020. It's unnerving.

So I mentioned here before that my aunt has stage 4 colon cancer. Her mom flew here in February to be her caregiver -- she is from Mozambique. I helped them find a place that would for sure accept her for a vaccine (CDC and our state DOH say anyone can get it regardless of immigration status but there have been stories of pharmacies around here turning away foreign passports which is BS) for later this week, which is great! She will be able to get both doses while she is here before she flies back in early May. I bet that is an immense relief for her since I can't imagine her country will be getting many, if any, vaccines until who knows when. Also my cousin that I tried to help get an appt but he said no, his live in GF tested positive last week. I'm eyerolling about it because she got it from "a friend" so why was she with friends? Anyway. I'm sure he's kicking himself now that he didn't at least have partial protection. My uncle lives in Mozambique and my cousins were born there. Thankfully they are a part of Covax, but the infrastructure is so sparse in the country and it's just so massive that it will definitely take time. I think they've received about 600,000 doses so far.

blurnette989 Interesting! My MIL and the rest of their family live in Pemba so I have no idea what that means for distribution as far as city vs rural etc. ETA: Wow NOT my MIL haha. My aunt's mother (not biologically related).

Agreed with what people are saying in here. People (in general) need to remember that more than one thing can be true at a time. I'm excited about vaccine rollout but then I look at Michigan and am very yikes.

I’m also nervous about things opening up more and people getting less cautious. I’m hoping vaccination rates are high enough here to dampen any surges. But also worried about kids - if mainly kids are unvaccinated and this virus seems to mutate readily... I’m currently having an inner battle of “send him to summer camp” and “he’s never leaving the house”! And H is like “let’s take a multi state road trip in May!” and I’m like “maybe I’ll go to the dentist in May?” Why is everything hard. 😅😭

Does anyone know if there is a suspected timeline for when the vaccine might be approved for 16 and under? I know there are trials going on for 12+ and just starting for under 12....does it seem likely that there will be approval by fall or end of year? lemondrop

My aunt's mother (not biologically related). I think so far only healthcare workers and emergency personnel are getting vaccinated. Pemba is likely to have more doses just by having more infrastructure. But i know if the north they are seeing lots of people flee terrorism at the border and pushing into cities like Pemba, so who knows. I'm happy she will be vaccinated before she returns home. Also this is how massive mozambique is- my family is in Maputo. So just 1500 miles or so away from Pemba.

I know that her family has called my uncle a miracle because without them moving to the US (he lived in Mozambique with her for a while, like 7 or 8 years I think), my aunt wouldn't have gotten the treatment she needs for her cancer. Which is both sad and heartwarming.

lemondrop, that will be just for kids 12 and up hopefully by the fall, right? Under 12 comes in 2022? Would be great to have it authorized it for both groups though! Thank you for you expertise in this area. I am mostly a lurker in this thread but your knowledge has been greatly appreciated!

How do you think younger kids are going to handle the side effects? I've been seeing it is expected the younger will have more prominent side effects is holding true for them too. We've been so careful not to say feeling crappy right now is related to the shot- I don't want to scare them. Like how do you explain to an 8 yo that I'm going to give you this shot (maybe twice!!) and you are going to probably have a fever and really sore arm and maybe have to spend the day in bed. I could see convincing them for one shot, but bringing them back for the second... Cost benefit analysis doesn't have quite the same sway at this age. lemondrop maybe you have thoughts on how this is going.

Sorry if redundant. Another AZ pause, in Canada for those under 55. Again certainly just a layperson, but I wouldn't want AZ if there were any other vaccine available to me, and I was all keen to get J&J if it were around. Transparency - I should be getting Moderna #2 tomorrow and I'm fully eligible since late January in my state. I wonder if AZ will ever get through FDA trials, tell the truth. Probably jumping to conclusions on my part. Canada is suspending the use of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine for people under the age of 55 following concerns it may be linked to rare blood clots. link

I'd love to see that five miles from a place for vaccination. So many people in northern Illinois have had a wonderful opportunity to visit either rural Illinois or inner city Chicago at this point. To be fair, the pharmacies do seem to be ramping up a bit by me, and I just saw four more mass sites opening not all that horribly far from me - maybe 20-30 miles.
But if they can pull this off, it's all to the good for the health of the country and political health as well, to be cynical.

Yeah I am very worried about this and the messaging around the vaccine for kids in general. SO many parents opt out of the HPV vaccine and that is way more established. I think convincing parents that the Covid vaccine is worth it for kids is going to be a very hard sell. I am in by no means saying kids shouldn't get it by the way. I will get my DD vaccinated as soon as I can. I am just worried about how this will go over. Here in Texas I see basically every adult I know lining up for the shot but I don't know a single person that plans on vaccinating their child(ren).

And there's the argument that kids have mild cases and it's not worth risking vaccine side effects.
Maybe we can get a one dose vaccine for kids. That would be awesome. I do plan on getting my kids vaccinated regardless though.

Okay how do we get off this rollercoaster with the surges? Like if we don’t get enough people immunized or we find they can still pass it asymptomatically how are we going to be able to establish when it’s safe to stop wearing masks and do more things?

I’ll admit I’m hesitant to get the shot for my boys. I have a history of Guillian Barre that generated from Hep B vaccine as 13 year old. Since it’s considered an AI we know the risk is possibly there to have a genetic component. They are fully vaccinated otherwise but I’m not sure how I feel about getting it right away.

This is a really valid concern for your specific situation though. By and large most families won’t have those concerns so I’m hopeful that people will see the benefit of their kids getting it to protect the medically at risk kids.

I was just thinking that I'm surprised that the government hasn't sent J&J shots to embassies and consulates for americans living abroad.
Has this come up in briefings at all?
