I got hit by a paywall trying to read the article in the tweet- can they do this? Isn’t it crossing jurisdictional lines? The majority of places and agencies in NY have no jurisdiction over NYC and vice versa. I fully admit have no idea how it works in criminal investigations, so do they not fall under this? Can someone talk to me like I’m 5 on this? If the crime occurred in Manhattan but just involved the Westchester property then Manhattan's attorney has jurisdiction. For example, if Trump sat in Trump Tower and called Westchester and ordered them to do x crime.

Raising the minimum wage makes sense. People aren’t getting paid what they did back in the day, houses don’t cost the same, food isn’t the same cost. Even $15 is not a livable wage. In my opinion, but it’s long overdo. I’m not an economist but these type of conversations never happen with rich folks or corporations. Why aren’t they being taught how not to bankrupt. How to save costs in meaningful ways. Their financial practices need to be scrutinized more. It’s always like, you can get this incentive but it comes with these bootstrappy stipulations. Why can’t people just make enough just because?

Here in my LCOL it's still barely enough for a car and house payment.

I'm not in Seattle but I am in WA state and we're incrementally a dollar a year until we hit 15. We're at 13 now. Prices have not risen noticeably from min wage. They did rise during the initial covid months but I imagine that was due to supply and demand.
When min wage was $11 here, it took 89 hours a week to pay for an average ONE bedroom apartment here. $15 should be the absolute bottom. It only amounts to $30k a year at full time. Even on that you'd need to work more than one job to make ends meet in most places. No one should have to work more than full time (whether it's one job or two to make those hours). Other countries do this just fine. And I'm not just talking about wealthy nations.
And I'm sorry, but if you can't afford to pay your employees a living wage, you can't afford employees.

Also, I'm sorry but training programs? Sure, but let's cut the patronizing of the poor.
I had a degree, a year of americorps, a year of peace corps, and I was STILL living below the poverty line working full time as a school secretary at a charter school (don't EVEN get me started). Know what would have helped? $15/hour minimum wage. Not more training into a higher paying field. I'm passionate about my career and that was the job I had at the time. Thank god I was able to get into the public school world. But this argument for not raising the minimum wage because it won't break the cycle of poverty is, in a word, bullshit.

Not to mention organizations are adept at sliding through so they don’t have to offer basic human benefits. I once worked a job for $13/hr for 39.5 hours a week. Didn’t have insurance because I was below their 40 hour threshold.

Plus all those billion dollar corps can 💯 pay their employees liveable wages plus health insurance but hoarding the wealth is funner I guess.

In my mike pence spiral last night, I stumbled on a YouTube video where Chuck, Nancy, Trump and pence are in a meeting and it gets really heated. And Pence just sits there and watch. The YouTube comments were a++. I think he was checked out two weeks in. Oh man I remember that! Pencebot.

One of the big arguments I hear about minimum wage is that it will just increase prices. Does anyone have a good response to this? The other two I hear are: -It'll lead to people working fewer hours, so therefore the same net amount -It'll lead to layoffs I don't have good responses either, though. I feel it's what we should do and will work out, but I don't have anything to point to. Well people working fewer hours if they're working 70 hour weeks is a good thing

Wow. I’m far from an expert in European politics, but gains by European parties like PVV and AFD in Germany make me so nervous.

sheilathetank, I don’t think its as simple robin hood stepping in to take from the ‘C’ suit executive and giving to the minimum wage worker because poverty isn’t as simple as a wage disparity. It’s really two separate issues-money/wage and what brought the family that is in poverty to that point? The over compensation of some and the under compensation of many. The forces that you argue will ‘self’ correct to account for this are the very forces that got us here in the first place. To take into account the very human element out of wages, especially when there will be a real or perceived demotion in pay, isn’t putting money above people. To be honest, I think the solution isn’t to ‘throw’ money at it via increasing the minimum wage. In order to truly and meaningfully lift families out of poverty there needs to be a systemic change at a fundamental level - create job/trade training programs that are prepackaged with trauma/addiction/emotional and physical health aspects, that pay those enrolled a livable wage for the area in which they live, do the work to address the barriers to employment that exist (education, financial literacy, childcare, mental health, addiction, domestic violence, etc) and do what we can to break the poverty cycle, especially inter generational poverty. When the training programs are completed and the participants graduate, have there be a direct feed into a job that pays the same wage to start. From there the employee, ideally with mentors within the training program or at the employer, can grow their career. Raising the minimum wage doesn't mean we can't/shouldn't also work on breaking the cycle of poverty. I don't understand your thought process. Yeah let's do both...? Not everyone is going to be a professional, for instance. Those people are critical to our economy and they don't deserve to live in poverty.

There's gotta be an -ism, someone let me know.
I hate the stigma that adults who work in fast food, retail, gas stations, grocery stores, etc for some reason should be paid less.. because reasons. For fuck sake if someone is fulfilled doing those things then GOOD. They are critical!
