Someone smarter than me: wouldn't raising the minimum wage also help people later in life? If their W-2 wages are higher over time, they'll collect more in social security after retirement, right?
Late life poverty is a huge problem already and this seems like a way we can help ourselves decades down the road.

I think I’m allowing myself to break dry January for Inauguration Week. Not going to go crazy, but a couple of drinks to celebrate the start of a new chapter!

What I don't get is why people are so upset with getting their money back from the government. Think of how many years you've paid into the system. The supposed richest country in the world should be able to afford giving people some money back during a FUCKING PANDEMIC. The arguments against are fucking stupid. This also baffles me, especially as it is the same crowd that cries every year about tax returns being interest-free loans to the government and it’s my money and they owe me interest et fucking cetera. Like.......this can be the interest you want back? It’s almost like people just want something to bitch about....

If you’re on the fence about breaking it, there are so many fun mocktails to try that could feel festive. I didn’t bother with dry January after the 6th. Glass of wine and book is my self care.

One of the big arguments I hear about minimum wage is that it will just increase prices. Does anyone have a good response to this?

This is also a good idea! I will have to think about it because it’s actually been easier than I thought. I am trying to make a glass of wine more of a self care and/or positive experience. I realized I was using it more to “fix” a bad day or because I was upset. I didn’t even break it on January 6, even though I really wanted some wine that night!

In my mike pence spiral last night, I stumbled on a YouTube video where Chuck, Nancy, Trump and pence are in a meeting and it gets really heated. And Pence just sits there and watch. The YouTube comments were a++. I think he was checked out two weeks in.

I'm not economist, I doubt prices across the board would increase by nearly double anyways. So those people making minimum wage (or less!) would greatly benefit.

One of the big arguments I hear about minimum wage is that it will just increase prices. Does anyone have a good response to this? The other two I hear are: -It'll lead to people working fewer hours, so therefore the same net amount -It'll lead to layoffs I don't have good responses either, though. I feel it's what we should do and will work out, but I don't have anything to point to.

One of the big arguments I hear about minimum wage is that it will just increase prices. Does anyone have a good response to this? The idea is that increased costs are passed along to the consumer in the form of increased prices. The truth is that prices have been increasing dramatically due to smaller sizes in packaging. It's a scare tactic that isn't rooted in reality.

So this $3000 /kid child tax credit is just for this year? I mean for tax year 2020? It's not domething being permanently upped, is it? Because I think that would be huge for low-income families. Incidentally also really cool for us, but not necessary, as it is for many families. I think it's just for the year. One of the things to keep in mind with all this is that they may need to push this through via reconciliation (which allows them to do it via 51 votes instead of 60 in the Senate if they don't get bipartisan support) but there are a whole host of rules that go along with being able to do it that way that relate to budgets/revenues/etc. We saw the difficulties with using reconciliation during the GOP's attempt to kill the ACA (failed) and their tax reform (why the cuts were temporary.)

One of the big arguments I hear about minimum wage is that it will just increase prices. Does anyone have a good response to this? Prices are artificially low because of legal slavery (like prison work) and wages being stagnant. It's all connected. Yes the price of goods should actually go up. This has probably been covered, I'm catching up.

One of the big arguments I hear about minimum wage is that it will just increase prices. Does anyone have a good response to this? The market will bear only so much if prices increase. People will stop buying your stuff. So companies have to make the choice, lay off low income people which effects the quality of what they put out there (food, merchandise etc) or change pay for big wigs making big bucks. Depending on the industry, its going to have to come out of big wig salaries. There will be some small businesses that are hurt and have to raise prices. But if you make closer to a living wage youll be able to pay slightly more for products.

If they can soul less, THAT'S ACTUALLY GOOD work should not be the most important thing. Lay offs may indeed happen, especially in companies that are set up with many low wage jobs. People much smarter than me have whole concepts of balancing this with the increase in the cost of goods, but also the plain truth is minimum wage is staggeringly low and is creating a big unstable economy.
