Are we talking about the $1.9T American Rescue Plan here? I think we had started in the covid thread, but let's continue it here. I would like to discuss. I’m seeing all the fighting on Twitter about the $1400 vs $2000. I hate the back and forth, but my gosh, just make it $2000. And make it monthly. I do get why people feel misled on the $2k and I think people being dismissive of that (like they are saying it’s basic math - $600 + $1400 = $2000) is pretty obnoxious. People are suffering and $400 is a shit ton of groceries.

Do y'all remember this commercial from a few years ago? It's from the *actual* Save the Children org which is an *actual* human rights org and not from crazy Qers. But it haunted me then and it feels like a warning now.

I’m wondering why the minimum wage hike is included in this though.

I say that as an economics major who is very deficit skittish. But it does concern me that there won’t be more coming. Like the earlier bills were smaller so it was easy to message this is just a start. If this passes it will be awhile before there is more. That’s why I think they should just do the $2k (and make it monthly)

If people can't make ends meet on one job, and they can't find/keep a second job, increasing the minimum wage keeps food on their tables. I mean, people shouldn't need multiple jobs to make ends meet, full stop. But increasing the minimum wage is a fast way to help the people and the economy, plus that income is taxable.

That’s why I think they should just do the $2k (and make it monthly) I don’t see how the minimum wage is part of covid relief, but I’m welcome to opinions. I agree with ending the tipped minimum wage though. So I’m an enigma lol Aid has been so long in coming. I would like to see the unemployment supplement higher. But most of this bill seems to be common sense stuff that should have been done long ago. I just want something to pass already and be distributed. Especially the testing and vaccination. My god. I tried all week to get rapid testing for my daughter and ended up with the lab testing and still waited a day and a half to get in.

I am irritated by the $1400 v $2000 as well. I agree it should be monthly, all while knowing it won't be. But FFS, just give the damn money. Trying to reason that we already got $600 is dumb. People need to survive right now and paying bills and buying groceries is how that happens. I don't care what was already given, for those who are desperately in need right now that money is long, long gone. Let's help move forward.
Shit. Deep breath.

Speaker Pelosi is giving a presser right now and you can tell how rattled and how angry she is.

Anyone want to do a Politics Board Book Club? Because this book exists and I know I'm going to want to talk about it: ![](https://images-production.bookshop.org/spree/images/attachments/4474016/original/9781631495731.jpg) I saw this when I was looking for presents for my dad at Christmas (He love John Wayne, he has like all his movies, I grew up on the Duke). I would be willing to read if I could get ahold of a copy. It's a worthy read. FYI, the author is local to me and posted sometime in the last week that the second print run of the book is basically sold out, so she's trying to speed up another round of printing. Thus, the book may be hard to find at present.

I also agree on the irritation of $1400 or $2000, because it's giving people a chance to scream, "bait and switch!!!" before Biden even takes office.
Like, that's the number one thing I'm seeing about this right now... "Democrats don't keep promises."
And trying to explain the math just turns people off, like they don't like being talked down to.
On top of all that, and most important, is that a lot of people could really use that extra $600 to keep food on the table.

So this $3000 /kid child tax credit is just for this year? I mean for tax year 2020? It's not domething being permanently upped, is it? Because I think that would be huge for low-income families. Incidentally also really cool for us, but not necessary, as it is for many families.

Interesting. Pelosi is taking a defiant posture WRT the scaled down inauguration. "This is not a concession to the terrorists," this is about the virus.

What I don't get is why people are so upset with getting their money back from the government. Think of how many years you've paid into the system. The supposed richest country in the world should be able to afford giving people some money back during a FUCKING PANDEMIC. The arguments against are fucking stupid.

An alien who only eats organic food? That’s the same guy, right? Woof. In all seriousness, do Pence and his family get secret service protection after he leaves office? I’m no fan of his, but I am seriously worried he and Mother are going to be killed.

It’s definitely needed and I didn’t mean to imply otherwise.

I want basically zero exceptions to minimum wage. Including domestic work and childcare.
AND I want it raised and then at the very least, tied to inflation.

My youngest rails against being an on campus worker for the university means he doesnt get the minimum wage that the surrounding city passed to go into effect jan 1. He gets $3 less than surrounding city.
