It made my bookworm heart happy that I had 5 pages to catch up on here! I set my reading goal for 60 again this year, even though I read 100 last year, I am being slightly hopeful that later this year things will be busier again and my reading will slow for a bit. I spent...not a small amount of money on books after Christmas - so I really should do a challenge to only read books I own this year. My first read of the year is The Year of the Witching and I am loving it. Year of the Witching looked really good! I hope you like it! I also spent a not-insignificant amount of money on books after Christmas. I feel a little guilty because I have already purchased more books than normal last year but I justify it as supporting the independent bookstore. Definitely more for them than me.

Mine are a mix from a local indie store, Indigo and Amazon (which unfortunately is the only places I can get a lot of the indie horror books I want)

I may have set my reading goal this year by counting those such books on my nightstand and rounding to a more even number. That day, I also picked up two holds at the library and mentally asked myself why I continue to borrow from the library when I have so many unread books. I did not have a sensible answer for myself. That's not even counting the ones on my iPad - I don't buy that many, but I always get the Amazon First Read plus if I have digital credits near expiration.

I've never used Goodreads before, but I set one up this weekend. Let's see if I can manage two tracking systems. Also if you want to connect on Goodreads, LMK.

I always start the year reading every book I got for my birthday (in December) and Christmas. I have about 100 pages left in Dune and then I'll be reading: The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris The Dutch House by Ann Patchett She by H. Rider Haggard Dream of the Red Chamber by Cao Xueqin Snow by John Banville Pachinko by Min Jin Lee It's an eclectic mix! Considering that Dream of the Red Chamber is 1000 pages long and originally published in the 1790s, I'm thinking it'll take a while to get through. But I'm committed. I probably won't read any more of the Dune series. I like it but I don't love it. Re Dream of the Red Chamber, do you read in Chinese? If not, which translation did you get? It's my favorite book (along with Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin series) and I get excited anytime someone mentions it. Even though Chinese is my first language, my proficiency is only about 9th grade level and I struggled through parts of it, especially the many poems. But I got enough of it to relish every elaborate detail of 18th century life and the intrigues of the characters within. I try to reread it every few years. No, I definitely can't read it in the original Chinese! It's the H. Bencraft Joly translation. Do you have thoughts on which translation is best? I'm excited to read it!

If no new books could come out for a while, that would be fantastic And I keep getting stuff from the library too. I has a problem I have...5 more books coming this month, and that should be it for quite some time

I'm just jumping into this thread without reading but will definitely be going back to read to get more ideas for my to-read list! I'm hoping to read 25 books this year (I use goodreads and their "reading challenge" feature). I'm currently easing into it with a re-read of "Quentins" - Maeve Binchy is one of my favorite authors for feel-good reads.
Some of the ones I'm looking forward to reading this year: Memorial Drive by Natasha Tretheway The Meaning of Mariah Carey On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong The Group by Mary McCarthy Normal People by Sally Rooney And lots of others...

It's nice to see this perspective! I buy all the books I read, and my husband does, too. Between us we have a very large library and I love it.

the only books I’ve bought lately are ebooks using amazon digital credit that’s about to expire or books for the kids at their school book fair. I am an avid reader though and love my overdrive/Axis360 accounts through the local library. I probably only have a handful of books sitting around that I haven’t read because I picked them up at the little libraries around my house with the intention of reading them and putting them back. I don’t have a ton of storage space in my house so I’ve been trying to keep extra “clutter” down, not that books are clutter but I just don’t have space.

I just checked on my library holds and only have one coming up soon, Kitchens of the Great Midwest. I'm excited about that one. But otherwise I am determined to keep to my bookshelf for at least January.

I try not to buy many books since we have an excellent library system but I'm not using the library until they get their shit together from Covid. I know they're doing their best but after the third time getting charged for an item I returned, I'm over it.

Sometimes I do wonder if doing mostly audio books means that my children don't see me read as much as I actually do. I personally am glad not to have a large collection of books to move (I've moved a lot in the last 15 years!) and to have all of my books with me on my phone wherever I go... but do they get that? They at least have very packed bookshelves.

Guys I will buy the physical copy of books I have already purchased digitally because if I love it I want a physical copy. Also feel like I'm extra supporting the Author. IDK it's a problem

I’m starting The Lake House I think emma recommended it the Kate Morton one? She’s one of my favourite authors Yes!
I just need to get back into my reading routine I was doing so well last year but the last 2 weeks of December I haven't done much.

I know they're doing their best but after the third time getting charged for an item I returned, I'm over it. That is disappointing! My library stopped charging late fees (permanently) this year but it’s a part of a system and books that are shipped from other townships still have late fees! So I have to be careful if I’m keeping something late. They also automatically renew which I love.

I always have a down month in December. There’s just too much going on. But I’m sure you will get back into it soon!

We no longer have that copy, but I would say anything too abridged would probably not be worth the effort.

I set my goal to 60 this year. I did 50 last year and ended up reading 71. I don't see our first half of the year changing much from last year so I will reevaluate this summer on if I want to up it at all.

But getting spammed with texts and emails threatening me with fines bc the materials were in quarantine was ridiiiiiiculous. So, as a public librarian, let me explain how my library does it. We quarantine for 4 days (maybe 5 depending on some factors). If your item is in quarantine after the due date, the system will automatically charge fines and send automated notices. However once it's checked in all the fines are removed. It is definitely confusing and causes users some trouble but it's the only way to do it, for us. If we checked items in BEFORE quarantining them, it would cause an absolute inventory nightmare. Unfortunately a lot of items remain legitimately overdue so the notices still have to go out. It isn't perfect. However if your library is actually charging for the quarantine period or missing checking in items all together then that's a different story.
