im not sure what I’m in the mood for, my 2 favourite genres are historical fiction and thrillers, even better when pared together. A Gentleman in Moscow We Were the Lucky Ones Then She Was Gone The Hunger by Alma Katsu (lots of books with this title) I’m declaring A Gentleman in Moscow my favorite book that I read in 2020.

I decided my big tackle for this quarter will be The Count of Monte Cristo. This is one of my very favourite novels! I've been thinking of re-reading it. A friend of mine has been recommending it for literally 20 years, so I thought it was probably time.

I don't read as many books as you all bc I spend too much time reading the Washington Post and the Atlantic 🤣 But for real, Atlantic articles are basically novellas. This is a fair point. I haven't read many books the past few years but I read the Atlantic nearly daily.

For anyone looking to diversify their reading, I saw this thread on books being released by Black authors this week. I know Pre orders are a big deal in the publishing world, so if you’ve got new books in your budget, or an Amazon gift card burning a hole in your pocket, there’s a wide variety of interests here.

I just started Anxious People by Fredrik Bachman and I am enjoying it, but I tend to love his books and how he describes people. The whole first chapter I anted to wrap up and keep for repeat reading. I put this on my list yesterday! Sounds like something I would enjoy.

Ok, I’m with the others! The Ten Thousand Doors of January fell flat, started out well, and went sideways in the second half.

I was pretty disappointed with some parts of this one but I thought her writing style was really gorgeous so I’m still looking forward to Once and Future Witches!

I finished Dead Scared by Sharon Bolton. I likes it but enjoyed the first in the series more. I’ll be starting We Are All The Same In The Dark tonight.

I loved The Ten Thousand Doors of January, but Once and Future Witched dragged for me a bit. I felt like it had real potential....and I liked many of the characters.... The Golden Compass did this too me too, book 1 and 2 were just amazing, the 3 lost the plot for me a bit (the movies even more so)! But the characters I loved sooo hard. I bought La Belle Sauvage several months ago, I think I am avoiding it for fear of being disappointed.

The last chapter had a great message but I feel like it doesn’t make up for the rest of the book. I hope you have a better experience!

I've heard such good things about Anxious People but I thought Beartown was disappointing so I wasn't sure if I should try anything of his again. I think this clinches it for me lol.

I did little reading in 2020 because my main form of consumption is audiobook listening in my car during my commute.
I have been binging some true crime podcasts for most of the fall.
I did force myself to get back into it and last week I started and finished The Vanishing Half, which was a big one last year that many of you read. Idk, I didn’t love it but I also didn’t think it was bad. It was just something about the pacing and the lack of plot twist that was just meh.
Not sure what I will read next.

I started the first Bridgerton book. It’s fun so far, and I’m liking the show as well.

Starting The Guest List now and probably finish Empty Promises by Ann Rule before bed. Curious about the Ann Rule book as it’s on my audible wishlist It was good, she kept the same cycle thru the several short stories, what I mean is in each story she gave background info on the victim(s) and criminal(s), the capture, trial and then the sentencing. TW: There are crimes involving young children.

I finished The Flight Attendant as my first 2021 book and now MH is trying to convince me to watch the series. I’m intrigued about the plot differences between the two.
I’m also 3/4 of the way through book 2 of the Golden Compass series. I’ve been listening to these books on my daily walks and really enjoying them. I feel like I’d be really confused reading it with all the different characters, but the various voices in the audio help me so much.

I read them the day they were released and have reread both of them twice since then. I read the Fablehaven series last week. It was really good and "matured" as the series went on. Now I have to decide between starting Bridgerton, The Flight Attendant (binged the series before I realized it was a novel), The Unicorn Chronicles (started it when I was 7 and he just now finished writing the series), or continuing my Brandon Mull marathon and start his Dragonwatch series.

It made my bookworm heart happy that I had 5 pages to catch up on here!
I set my reading goal for 60 again this year, even though I read 100 last year, I am being slightly hopeful that later this year things will be busier again and my reading will slow for a bit. I spent...not a small amount of money on books after Christmas - so I really should do a challenge to only read books I own this year. My first read of the year is The Year of the Witching and I am loving it.

I always start the year reading every book I got for my birthday (in December) and Christmas. I have about 100 pages left in Dune and then I'll be reading: The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris The Dutch House by Ann Patchett She by H. Rider Haggard Dream of the Red Chamber by Cao Xueqin Snow by John Banville Pachinko by Min Jin Lee It's an eclectic mix! Considering that Dream of the Red Chamber is 1000 pages long and originally published in the 1790s, I'm thinking it'll take a while to get through. But I'm committed. I probably won't read any more of the Dune series. I like it but I don't love it. Re Dream of the Red Chamber, do you read in Chinese? If not, which translation did you get? It's my favorite book (along with Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin series) and I get excited anytime someone mentions it. Even though Chinese is my first language, my proficiency is only about 9th grade level and I struggled through parts of it, especially the many poems. But I got enough of it to relish every elaborate detail of 18th century life and the intrigues of the characters within. I try to reread it every few years.
